A beautiful new villa in a peaceful, rural spot, this place is little more than an hour's drive from the Verdon Gorge. The ideal escape for an outdoorsy family or a group of friends, it's traditional on the outside but modern on the inside, with a contemporary kitchen diner, tiled floors and all-white walls. Topped off with enormous grounds of around 1000 m², it's surrounded by pretty countryside.

You'll probably be here for the excellent hiking and cycling locally (or in fact the canoeing, rafting or paragliding) but this home is much more than just a convenient base. A place with real appeal and stylish decor, it has a relaxing, home-from-home feel. Pad out to the south-facing terrace and sun yourself on the loungers or read in the shade of the old holm oak tree. And if the heat is getting to you, there's a neat solution that the kids will love too – your own above-ground pool with detachable steps.

After an active day out, cook dinner in your fabulous kitchen, with two sets of sliding doors so you can open it right up to the garden, or light the barbecue and eat outside as the stars come out. Before bed, plan the next day's adventures – perhaps you'll choose to picnic on the shores of Lac de Sainte-Croix or visit Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, said to be one of the most beautiful villages in France.

In the 18th century, this home was a sheepfold. It’s retained its authenticity and charm as a holiday home, but now boasts modern comforts. The outdoor space is the star of the show, with a heated private pool, petanque pitch, and 4.5 hectares of gardens. If we could give a home a pass based on location alone, this address would undoubtedly get one. Not only does it sit within the Verdon National Park and a five-minute drive from the truffle markets of Aups, but it has a prime view of the mountain peaks of Massif des Maures.

Thankfully, the villa has a lot more riding in its favour other than this wonderful position. For starters, it really spoils guests when it comes to outdoor space. As well as a pair of terraces from which to admire the scenery, there's a huge garden complete with a petanque court, playground and a fountain to enjoy. Best of all, there's a swimming pool that offers a refreshing spot in which to relax during baking hot afternoons.

Once a sheepfold in a former life, the home itself is imbued with rustic charm, filled as it is with wooden ceiling beams, terracotta tiles and handsome antique furnishings. The main bathroom was once an old pigeon house – not something you get to write all that often – but today it's the very vision of relaxation with its cast iron bathtub.

When you're in the mood to see more of this beautiful landscape, there are ample walking routes in the surrounding national park, as well as opportunities for everything from climbing, paragliding, canoeing, rafting and horseback riding. The shores of Lake of Sainte-Croix are only a short drive away if you fancy pootling about in a boat or splashing about in the invitingly blue waters.

You'll find this gorgeous family-size cottage, surrounded by unspoilt countryside, at the foot of the typical Provençal village of Ventabren, is just about as sweet as it gets. Under a pergola of vines, with a view of the fountain, we can think of nothing better than drinks and dinner alfresco out here with friends and family.

But when it's time to head out, take a fifteen-minute drive to the beautiful city of Aix-en-Provence, boasting stone streets and cobbled squares overlooked by the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Locally, there's a hub of activity all within walking distance with a historic centre and breathtaking views of the Berre pond. You can also reach Marseille and it's sandy beaches in just thirty minutes by car.

The light-filled living space leads to the kitchen, where you can whip up dishes – though you’ll have plenty of restaurants to choose from nearby if you want to sample the local cuisine.

This beautiful village house is the perfect place to enjoy a holiday in the Luberon region of Provence. The property is located on a hillside on the edge of Gordes, one of France's classified 'Plus Beaux Villages'. The Provençal valley views from the terraced grounds are incredible.

The house has been decorated with refined style and there's an authentic ambience across its elegant lounge, dining room and perfectly equipped kitchen with doors sliding open to the al-fresco dining terrace. Modern additions include air-conditioning throughout, a Sonos music system and Smart TVs in its mezzanine lounge and two of the three bedrooms.

Sleeping up to six guests, the bedrooms are gorgeous, one with a king-size double bed, wood-beamed ceiling and romantic rolltop bath, another with a queen-size double, sofa and en suite shower room and the third en suite with twin beds and lovely views through its little windows. 

Outside, the vistas of Provence will take your breath away whether you are enjoying a glass of Luberon AOC wine on the upper terrace or peacefully reading on the outdoor sofa beneath the poolside pergola. The swimming pool is superb for warm summer days when you don't wish to venture too far. We love the rustic charm of the terraced grounds with old stone steps, pretty pathways and swathes of summer colour.

Surrounded by lush greenery, this Provençal farmhouse will delight sun worshippers and wine lovers alike. The outdoor pool is the real centrepiece, but the garden boasts plenty of other spots for kicking back with a glass of rosé, including a shaded patio with an outdoor kitchen for a spot of alfresco cooking. The interior isn’t quite as striking with some rooms feeling a little dated. But the space has, nonetheless, retained plenty of traditional charm with its exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings, making it a nice backdrop for cosy evenings in. And location-wise, you’re just a short drive from some of Provence’s most beautiful villages, so you won’t have to venture far to get a taste of local culture – and viticulture.

This villa nestled in the heart of a picturesque Provencal landscape offers a comfy retreat for a family or a group of friends. Just a short drive from the village of Lacoste, you’ll enjoy peace and tranquillity here, while at the same time being close to all the amenities. We're not sure if BBC sent you here, but if you want a closer look at Mulberry House's kitchen, look no further than Rick Stein’s 'Secret France' featuring the smiley host making a delicious meal here — and were absolutely expect your to try to recreate it! This is a typical French hilltop chateau, but this doesn't mean it's ordinary. The casually welcoming atmosphere is a product of modern furniture and restored period features, the kitchen being the best example of this harmony. Still, we expect you to spend much more time around this home than in it. With the huge pool that's perfect for a morning splash and the futuristic loungers around it, a gorgeous dining spot under the pergola, and a breezy back garden, there are plenty of spots to socialise or reflect in peace. The host team that looks after this home is always available to help and organise those extra touches that will make your stay even more special. Think transport to football matches in Marseilles, babysitters, maid service, and more.

We think this modern home is perfectly sized for a few friends, small families, or a couple of couples. It's bright and contemporary – albeit a tad plain – but there's more than enough space indoors to gather together or go your separate ways. Outside, a small plunge pool has afternoon dips written all over it. There's also a terrace for alfresco dining and a pétanque court when you're feeling competitive. To top it all off, the centre of Salernes is a short stroll away, putting shops and eateries at your fingertips.

Secluded in the French Riviera, this home works well for family reunions and large groups of friends. The style here might not be for everyone, but the house is spacious and well-equipped. Though the lack of handrails on the stairs might be intimidating, it will likely be the furthest thing from your mind when relaxing in the private pool. A stroll down the seafront promenade, lined with French eateries, awaits.
