Boasting stunning views over the picturesque wooded hillsides of the Massif des Maures, this stone farmhouse has lots of space inside and out. Two of the single beds are up on a mezzanine level and younger children may need supervision on some of the staircases. That said, the kitchen is well equipped for family meals, and pets are welcome to join you. Sun loungers surround the infinity pool, and the large garden has room for alfresco dining. There's plenty of peace and quiet here, so we think you'll want a car for trips to Saint-Tropez, Nice, and Cannes.

We love the communal facilities at this charming villa. There are three swimming pools, no less, including a wave pool, a spa, a restaurant, a supermarket, and tennis courts. You can also simply relax on the terrace shaded by the vine covered pergola and take in the countryside views. Inside, there’s a traditional French vibe, and the vistas from the main bedroom deserve a mention, too. Both bedrooms have air conditioning, which is handy for when the temperature rises. And when you feel like exploring, this villa is ideally placed. Port Grimaud is just a five-minute drive, while Saint-Tropez is also easily reached by car. Or let your host arrange a boat rental and explore the French Riviera’s turquoise waters.

If we could give a home a pass based on location alone, this address would undoubtedly get one. Not only does it sit within the Verdon National Park and a five-minute drive from the truffle markets of Aups, but it has a prime view of the mountain peaks of Massif des Maures.

Thankfully, the villa has a lot more riding in its favour other than this wonderful position. For starters, it really spoils guests when it comes to outdoor space. As well as a pair of terraces from which to admire the scenery, there's a huge garden complete with a petanque court, playground and a fountain to enjoy. Best of all, there's a swimming pool that offers a refreshing spot in which to relax during baking hot afternoons.

Once a sheepfold in a former life, the home itself is imbued with rustic charm, filled as it is with wooden ceiling beams, terracotta tiles and handsome antique furnishings. The main bathroom was once an old pigeon house – not something you get to write all that often – but today it's the very vision of relaxation with its cast iron bathtub.

When you're in the mood to see more of this beautiful landscape, there are ample walking routes in the surrounding national park, as well as opportunities for everything from climbing, paragliding, canoeing, rafting and horseback riding. The shores of Lake of Sainte-Croix are only a short drive away if you fancy pootling about in a boat or splashing about in the invitingly blue waters.

Prepare to be wowed by this extraordinary villa in the Esterel National Park on the French Riviera. Constructed in 1904 for Lord Amherst, it retains an air of aristocracy, as seen with the grand staircase, antique furnishings and the chandeliers in almost every single room. On sunny days, what could be more civilised than afternoon tea out in the courtyard complete with loggia running around and a fountain in the middle?

However, you'll probably be happy to hear that some additions have been made in the hundred or so years since. The huge heated swimming pool is one such example, as is the gym, cinema room and billiards table inside.

Lots of people have been so charmed by the address that they've held weddings or large parties here, and you can do the same if you so wish. Alternatively, you can arrange art classes, wine-tasting or sporting events through the host, or see more of the area with a chauffeur or private yacht.

There's no shortage of places to visit around here. The medieval village of Fréjus with its Roman amphitheatre is only five minutes' drive away, as is the seaside town of St. Raphael. There are plenty of walking routes and scenic points to discover in the surrounding countryside, but Cannes is only forty minutes away in the car if you prefer to idle about aimlessly.

Just a short drive from the picturesque village of Callas, it's in a staggeringly beautiful spot, surrounded by lush gardens, fragrant herbs and mature trees. A rural area with great walks to be had nearby, it gives you and your group – be they family or friends – a chance to slow down and breathe in the fresh air.

Built from local stone, with ancient timbers and tiled floors, its most striking room has to be the main living room. Here, under the double-height ceiling, you'll find a grand fireplace, comfy modern sofas, and a large dining table – with doors out to a covered dining terrace and stairs up to a mezzanine with a desk. There's a practical kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking even the largest meals at home, along with a separate snug room with a squashy corner sofa.

The bedrooms are all overlooking the garden, with doors out to the main terrace, and they're a mix of period features and modern styling. And we're big fans of the bathrooms here – they wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel.

Stroll through your garden and steps lead down from the terrace to the glittering pool, where you'll find sun loungers and parasols. A perfect place for lazy afternoon swims, it's a good size for the whole group and has excellent views.

The nearby village has a local market on Tuesdays and Saturdays and there's lots to explore within a half-hour drive of your home, including local vineyards. It's around an hour and a half from Gorge Du Verdon and half an hour from the village of Seillans, voted one of the most beautiful in France.
