Whitewashed beams adorn the ceilings in the living room, vibrant flatwoven rugs lay on oak floors and an ornamental fireplace takes centre stage. It's the perfect spot to kick back and relax after a long walk through the gardens and the open layout makes it easy to socialise while others rustle up a meal in the French farmhouse-style kitchen. During the summer, head out to the terrace overlooking the courtyard for a cup of tea or evening tipple, surrounded by lush potted plants and pretty flowers. But the best part of this home is the access to the Gotha Gardens. Stroll among the greenery, stopping to smell the roses and nibble on a slice of cake in the courtyard cafe. When you can pull yourself away from this verdant hideaway, it's only a quick drive to Ashwell – home to beautiful architecture and three county pubs – and stately homes like Wimpole Hall and Knebworth House are easily reachable. A favourite among the Edwardian upper classes who didn't have the time or inclination to travel as far as Bath, Maidenhead is on the up and up. The soon-to-open Elizabeth line will also make getting into London a breeze, with a forty-minute train ride landing you at Tottenham Court Road.

Meanwhile, a visit to the nearby village of Bray is renowned for its Michelin-starred restaurants. In addition to Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck and The Hind's Head, there's also Alain Roux's The Waterside Inn – you can't go wrong with any of them. 

Skindles

Part of the historic Estate of Dorney Court, this timber-framed house dates back to the sixteenth century and is a magical blend of heritage and modernity.

The former great hall is emblematic of this. The thirty-foot-high ceilings remain, as do the wooden beams in the vaults, but there have been a few recent additions, from the glitzy chandelier and bovine-themed artwork to the huge kitchen complete with a range cooker. Elsewhere, you'll find two wood burners and an open fire, so guests will never be anything other than toasty. Plus, there's a range of vintage beds in the sleeping quarters, which bring a dash of aristocratic glamour to your slumber.

Surrounding the property are some large grounds with stables and English village life awaits just beyond the boundaries, with Dorney Common and the home of the London 2012 Olympics rowing events, Dorney Lake, only eight minutes' walk away. If you want to work up a hunger beforehand, there are some pretty walking routes running alongside the River Thames, which can be reached in about twenty minutes from the home, plus a pub and bakery taking barely two minutes' walk.

The Chapel Light

Wake up beneath bright roof windows and oak-beamed ceilings, deep in the West Sussex countryside. Surrounded by greenery, this lovely farmhouse has heaps of charm and two Shetland ponies waiting to greet you. In the area, you'll find quaint pubs, rural vineyards, and the South Downs National Park.

Inside, the living area is packed with colour and comfort. Upstairs, you'll find stripped-back floorboards and antique furnishings. There's no denying that this home has been restored beautifully, but it's eco-friendly too. 

After strolling along the bridleway, bake a shepherd's pie in this vibrant kitchen and gather your family around the many-hued dining table. Feel free to rummage through the bookshelf and light the log burner, or see what's new on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

There's a barbecue on hand and spare wellies here too – so you can enjoy country life in all winds and weathers. Across the beloved courtyard, don't forget to challenge your loved ones to a match on the old Bonzini football table in the games room.

This is a place where you can reconnect with nature. Ponies are bred on this farm, so you might even be lucky enough to spot a foal. There isn't much light pollution around either, which means you can see starry skies on clear nights.

Hares & Haystacks

Whether it's a private gym for morning workouts or a study for digital nomads, this Windsor home has plenty to boast about. Patio doors open straight onto the garden – perfect for evening aperitifs and summer barbecues. There's more than enough space in the lounge for everyone to get together, though if you need a bit of quiet time, each bedroom is as comfortable as the next. One is in a separate studio for extra privacy. As for the location, Windsor and all its royal offerings are just a short drive away.

A Windsor Welcome

Placing you right in the heart of Warfield, this home provides a practical yet cosy space from which to explore the Berkshire countryside. There are forest walks and cycle trails within easy reach, while it’s just a five-minute drive to the shops and restaurants of the Lexicon – a great option for family entertainment. At full occupancy, one guest will be sleeping on a pull-out bed which might not be ideal for longer stays, but it has all the other essentials you could need for everyday comfort. We like the little garden – a great spot for summer evening drinks.
