Original timber beams and exposed stone walls hark back to the barn's heyday, but the electric car charging point, rainfall shower and Sonos speakers are just a few of the 21st-century updates. This is the perfect spot for a family to unwind in the Cornish countryside. While parents rustle up a meal in the kitchen, kids can hang out in their own room, playing on the Xbox One. On summer evenings, everyone will enjoy a barbecue in the courtyard before retreating inside to the cosy living area for a movie night, but when the weather turns nippy, cuddle up by the log burner instead. There's plenty to get up to in the local area, too. You're almost equidistant from both the North and South coasts of Cornwall. Spend a day at the beach in Padstow or visit historic Charlestown, both of which are less than a forty-minute drive away. For those who enjoy long country ambles, Cardinham Woods is just five miles away and offers plenty of walking and cycling trails. This cosy Cornish cottage is an exemplary example of boutique living. There are all sorts of quirky additions to the interior that lend a sense of personality, from the record player and acoustic guitar to the book collection with plenty of local guides. The welcome gift of Cornish wine and produce is also a lovely touch.

That being said, all the essentials are nailed, too. In the living room, the wood-burning stove will really come into its own during colder evenings, as will the pretty freestanding tub in the bathroom. The long turquoise kitchen is plenty big enough for whipping up hearty suppers after a long day of exploring Cornwall's great outdoors.

If you're into your rambling, Bodmin Moor starts just over five minutes' drive from your front door, with stone circles and tors to punctuate your walking. Both Fistral and Polzeath Beaches take around forty minutes to reach in the car. If, however, you want to see the local area on two wheels, the home comes with a pair of bicycles that guests are more than welcome to borrow and the Camel Trail lies two minutes' pedal from the front door.

Craving some time away from the mundane? This Cornish retreat, located just 2.5 miles away from Fowey and a ten-minute walk away from Par Sands Beach is a dreamy spot from which to escape the daily grind. With its cottage-like aesthetic, the home offers all the necessary home comforts to ensure a comfortable stay. Laid out like a studio, the living area and bedroom present an open space to kick back in after a day of taking in the surrounding nature. A muted colour palette of creams and greys, alongside the earthy hues of the wooden furnishings and flooring, create a humble abode, that proves easy to cosy up in and relax. The kitchen leads out onto a private terrace, where guests can lap up the sunshine on a summer's afternoon or watch the bats flying around at dusk. Pick apples from the many apple trees around the property when venturing out along the nature-filled pathways. When you return back, there's even a useful little handheld shower outside for muddy boots and rinsing off the dogs. Once you've worked up an appetite, light up the barbecue for an evening in – since there's no light pollution here, you'll see the glimmering stars light up the sky on a clear night. The home is idyllically situated down a picturesque farm track surrounded by fields – meaning a peaceful night's sleep is undoubtedly on the cards. Enjoy walks down to the local pub at the bottom of the hill for a nightcap and leisurely strolls along the southwest coastal path (just a ten-minute walk away) during the light of the daytime. The nearby holiday destination of Lostwithiel is only four miles away and offers a few brilliant places to eat, but you'll also be staying quite near to the Eden Project and the seaside wonders of Fowey. While the outside of this cottage is pleasantly traditional, the insides are bold and stylish. There are plenty of vivid colours, soft forniture that you can melt into after a long day of exploring, and a lovely wood-burning stove. If you want to focus on relaxation, not household chores, you can get fresh seasonal produce delivered from the garden kitchen and even book a private chef to whip up something magical with them. The host also offers regular cleaning and a little bird told us that there will be a little Cornish present waiting for you on arrival.

The colourful town of Fowey is often named one of the most beautiful places in England, and this sleek penthouse is right in the thick of it. Designed to an incredibly high standard by your host, Alison, the interior feels very in keeping with the seaside locale without ever coming across as a cliche. There's not a deckchair stripe in sight. Instead, you're treated to sculptural driftwood lamps, moody seascape paintings, and a sophisticated palette of deep blues and grey tones that reflect the British weather more accurately than the usual sunshine yellow. If you can bear to leave the home, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and places of interest in the immediate vicinity. Fowey is a beautiful harbourside town with public events occurring throughout the year. The local community is a healthy mix of all ages who are warm and friendly and adept at making newcomers feel welcome.

An 18th-century building carefully restored to its original plan, it expertly showcases the building’s past through the use of exposed Cornish slated walls, original beams, restored feature fireplaces, and other raw materials that combine in a perfect mix of old and new.  

Formerly a listed Manor House, Courthouse, and Mill, the building is filled with a sense of history as well as its own unique character and sense of place. Lounge in the luxurious living spaces or enjoy a special meal together with your loved ones in the grand dining room that's flooded with that inimitable Cornish coastal light. Boconnoc is a little parish just a few miles outside of Lostwithiel, one of Cornwall's most sought-after rural villages. Of course, nothing is stopping you from taking the car to other places like Fowey and the Eden Project as the whole of the peninsula is well-marked and the roads can easily take you quite far in under an hour. The cottage itself is a beautifully refurbished affair, draped in bold colours and furnished with comfortable furniture. You'll get plenty of light, access to the estate's tennis courts and games room, as well as the option of getting fresh seasonal produce delivered from the kitchen garden. If you're looking to really put your feet up and relax, the host can organise a private chef and regular in-house cleaning.

Situated right on the water in pretty Polruan, this cottage is quite a find. The terrace offers panoramic views of boats bobbing on the estuary, making it the perfect place for alfresco dinners and sunset drinks. Inside is utterly charming, with an eat-in kitchen, a cosy lounge with a fireplace, and a trio of comfortable bedrooms. Two can be arranged into twins if needed, and some boast their own waterfront panoramas. As for location, you'll have easy access to two beaches, coastal paths, and the ferry to Fowey. Just be sure to pack comfortable shoes – Polruan's steep hills and narrow streets make driving challenging, so travelling on foot is the best way to explore.

Take a seat on the front terrace of this charming cottage and take in the glimpses of the estuary this chic town is famous for. There’s a patio off the garden room too, ideal for reading your holiday book and this place is perfect as an all-year-round getaway as there’s an open fire for those colder months. Just a couple of things to note with this home – firstly, the stairs to the second floor are a bit on the narrow side. Secondly, there’s no parking and the road outside is steep, however, one reserved parking space is provided, a ten-minute walk away. You’ll definitely need to bring your walking shoes.

Enjoy long walks on the South West Coast Path – the cliff tops at Park Head offer incredible views across to the sea stacks at Bedruthan Steps (a ten-minute ride away). Back at this wonderful barn – it's perfect for a family or a group of friends looking for a tranquil retreat. Inside, we were blown away by the rustic charm mixed with elegant modernism. We love the Delabole slate bathrooms, exposed stone walls and vaulted beams throughout this home. In fact, this place has been designed with socialising and entertaining in mind – it's a great space to spend quality time together. On chillier days, curl up in front of the cosy wood-burning stoves in the living room or den and settle in for an evening of board games with the family. There are four acres of grounds to explore here, including orchards and wildflower meadows. There's even an outdoor shower, so you can rinse off after visiting the beach – your lovely hosts have really thought of everything here.  Our favourite spot in the garden has to be the magical summerhouse – savour the spectacular views that stretch to the Atlantic Ocean or recline on the day bed and read a book. It's just one of the many fantastic features that make this home so very special.

Do bucket-and-spade breaks in luxury at this family-friendly, Edwardian townhouse in Wadebridge. The careful planning of the interior design to meet guests’ needs and the meticulous sourcing of furnishings and fittings took nearly a year to complete, with the subsequent renovations completing towards the end of 2022.

Upstairs, each bedroom is as beautifully styled as the next, though the main en-suite bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and balcony trumps them all.  With a suntrap garden for morning coffees and two sitting rooms to curl up in with the newspapers in winter months, what’s the big rush to leave the house? Although location-wise this home's also great – North Cornwall’s beaches are just a short drive away. Or keep things local with a mooch about Wadebridge or a dog walk along the River Camel Trail – just five minutes from your door.

No matter how you end up spending the day, you can always look forward to returning to this traditional yet chicly-finished cottage. As soon as you step through the doors, you'll be greeted by a warm and cosy interior that's really brought to life by the addition of funky patterned wallpaper, notes of brilliant blue, and eye-catching original stone detailing. Sink into the generous sofas in front of the feature fireplace with log burner or crack open the family board games to fire up a little friendly competition. There are also children's DVDs and even a toy chest to keep the little ones entertained, making this an ideal space to unwind after a long day of exploring the coast.
