Under Starry Skies

Set in fifty-five acres of rolling grounds, with woodland, landscaped gardens and views over the River Tamar, this stunning piece of history was built in 1698. Based on an even earlier fortified home, its turrets and striking architecture mean it's always been referred to as 'the castle'. With grand hallways, antique furniture and character features at every turn, this really could be your own stately home for a time. Fit for a large group or an extended family – perhaps celebrating a special occasion – it's a joy to stay here at any time of year. The two drawing rooms have open fires for winter nights, while the solar-heated pool will delight during the summer. There's a huge dining table for celebration dinners, a games room with table football and a pool table, a barbecue and fire pit in the grounds, and eleven elegant bedrooms – each with private facilities. The perfect base from which to explore the West Country, it's easy to get to Dartmoor, the Devon and Cornwall coast and an abundance of pretty villages by car, while keen walkers can hike the nearby trails along the Tamar Valley or enjoy the many walks around the estate. Follow the paths down to the picturesque bathing hut on the quay, or up to original owner Sir James Tillie's mausoleum. It's a six-minute drive to one of the area's premier golf courses and just over twenty minutes into the centre of Plymouth.

Nestled in the heart of the Devon countryside, this charming former school house promises a serene retreat for a family or group of friends. We love the seamless blend of old and new here, with the main house showing off the home’s history, and the garden rooms bringing a contemporary feel. And, if you can tear yourself away, Dartmoor National Park is a mere ten-minute drive away.

Set over three floors, all facing the sea just steps away, it's part of a gleaming new development of a handful of striking, contemporary houses. Decked out in grey and black, with balconies and terraces featuring clear glass balustrades, it's a delightful spot with some pretty impressive added luxuries.

We enter via the games room and utility area on the ground floor, where you'll find a pool table and – as odd as it may sound – a dog shower. Perfect for washing the sand from your furry friend, it's a unique feature we think could make all the difference to your stay. There's a ground floor bedroom and bathroom – perfect if some guests prefer a little more privacy – and stairs lead up to the large kitchen and impressive living room. Here you can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and access both a small balcony and a side terrace with an outdoor dining table. It also happens to house a private hot tub with sea views.

The two remaining bedrooms and bathrooms are on the top floor and it's here you'll find our favourite room. The main bedroom is simply stunning, with a private balcony and a large en-suite bathroom with a glass wall so that, from the raised bathtub, you can not only see the TV but also out through the patio doors to the sea. 

Perfect for a group of friends or a family here to relax on the beach, it's only a short walk to the Whitsand Bay Golf Course, and a cute café, with plenty of big attractions within a short drive.

Little Bo Peep

If you're looking for a quiet corner of Cornwall where you can really relax, then this is the place for you. Situated in the sleepy hamlet of Portwrinkle, just a stone's throw away from the beach, this handsome home can sleep up to ten guests plus a fluffy pal. 

The interior is ultra-modern, and you'll love the open-plan living space that's perfect for socialising. If the weather is chilly then you can curl up on the sofa and admire the vista from indoors, thanks to the huge windows framing the sea. However, if the sun is shining, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside, breathing in the salty air and perhaps sipping a glass of Cornish craft gin and tonic. And, kids and teens will love playing in the games room, while the grown-ups soak in the alfresco hot tub – perfection. 

The local beach is only 100m away, where you can dip your toes in the water or perfect your paddleboarding skills. When you get hungry or thirsty, the local pub is a ten-minute walk up the hill where you can enjoy some traditional hospitality. And, if you fancy doing some exploring, lace up your boots and join the nearby South West Coastal Path to admire the epic views. 

A Bird's Eye View

Nestled in a typical Devon valley with house martins nesting under the eaves, cattle grazing in the distance and minimal phone reception, you could be forgiven for thinking you've stepped back in time. From the moment you walk in the door, you'll immediately feel the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away. The home has been sympathetically converted to retain its evident charm, with the addition of luxurious modern comforts (including wi-fi – so you won't be completely disconnected from the world). The spacious kitchen is equipped with an AGA for the ultimate in countryside chic, though there's also an induction hob as a backup, plus antique chairs and a beautiful walnut dining table. Through to the new section of the house and you're treated to double-height ceilings and plenty of natural light, in addition to a couple of bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom enjoys views overlooking the orchard and terraced lawns from the open mezzanine beside it. Outside in the garden, you'll find a contemplative space abuzz with insect life throughout the spring and summer, thanks to an abundance of wildflowers. There are plenty of walks from the house, many along secluded footpaths traversing unspoiled valleys – there's a chance you might not meet another soul. If you can tear yourself away, you'll find plenty of pubs and hotels serving fantastic seasonal produce and locally brewed beers. Alternatively, drop by Alder Vineyard – a ten-minute drive away – for a journey far beyond the bottle.



The Old School House

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.
