Inside, the unique roundhouse design comes to the fore, with a well-equipped kitchen gently curving around the wall, a rustic round dining table, and a double bed set beneath a shining porthole skylight. The site is equipped with a converted horse trailer turned coffee shop so you can dose up on caffeine as the kids help with feeding the farm animals. Your hosts are blessed with over a decade's worth of local knowledge and are more than happy to share their favourite local haunts with guests, so whether you're after a local butcher to stock up for a barbecue, a bougie brunch spot, or a great local pub, they've got you covered.

This holiday home just south of Bude is a great spot to spend some quality time with the whole family. It’s only a short walk to the beach, where you can take surf lessons or go for a hike with your four-legged friend along the Atlantic coast. The house has got three ensuite bedrooms and a large family bathroom, but it’s the garden with the sea view that we like best. There are a small local shop and pub nearby and the town of Bude is but a short drive away.

Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

The hosts built this home from the ground up – pulling up outside you'll immediately get the sense you're about to stay somewhere unique. And you'll get the personal touch too, as host Deborah and her family love to greet every guest on arrival. Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

This seventeeth–century property overlooks the sparkling blue waters of the seaside town, Brixham. Situated next to the charming harbour, you're only a short stroll away from the waterside. Head up the three-tiered garden to admire the view from atop. You'll be greeted with clear skies, the hum of the waters, and the sounds of the harbour. 

The large windows throughout the home light up the space as you play on the vintage arcade table that offers the classical Space Invaders and Pacman. Whoever gets to sleep in the Captain's Cabin bedroom gets a gorgeous view of the surrounding harbour right from the comfort of their own bed – imagine waking up next to that blissful sight every morning.

Only a ten-minute drive from the cobbled streets of Polperro and the bustling harbour town of Looe, this studio apartment is a countryside hideaway. Part of a converted hotel, the home is set in the rolling fields of Cornwall. We love to run an evening bath in the outdoor tub and watch the sunset over the hills. The small plot is great for a solo stay or romantic retreat – with a comfy king-size bed and small kitchenette to cook up light meals and breakfasts. The hosts are particularly attentive and bursting with recommendations and helpful tips. Lace up your walking boots: there are paths to explore on the four acres of land the home is set on, or drive to the nearby South West Coast Path for tramps over coastal cliffs. On sunny days, it's a quick journey to Cornwall's most beautiful beaches. We love Lantic Bay, a sheltered cove that's only accessible by foot, for a sense of privacy. For dinner, it's best to head out and make the most of the abundance of seafood in this region.

This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.
