It’s in the centre of Looe, just five minutes from the beach and a three-minute walk from the train station. A working fishing town, the immediate area is filled with restaurants and pubs serving the freshest catch of the day and there’s a town beach where soft sand slips into turquoise sea. 

The view from big, Victoriana windows is over the quayside of the East Looe River so you can watch boats putting in and out. This place may look like a grand, Victorian villa on the outside, but inside it’s pristine white and modern with vibrant pops of silky blue. An exposed stone fireplace still sits at the heart of the living room though, where French doors let the natural light stream in. Cook your own catch of the day in the ultra-modern kitchen which is big enough for several chefs to bustle around in.

The real bonus here is the private terrace, which is set with a table and chairs. Overlooking the quayside, this is the perfect spot to share a bottle of something bubbly as the sun goes down over the water.

Time in Looe

Set in a former hotel, this home is an excellent choice for exploring some of Cornwall's prettiest corners while avoiding the crowds. It’s a minutes’ drive from the bustling port of Looe, where we love to mosey around the model village, gorge on the catch of the day at a restaurant or perch on the sheltered beach. Polperro is also close by, a ten minutes’ drive away, with its cobbled streets and local pubs. Back at home, you’ll find a relaxing bright environment with beachy vibes. We love the different coloured wood in the kitchenette, the blue tiles in the bathroom and the wicker lamps. The loveseat has a clear nautical theme, perfect for afternoon lounging, while the bed is luxurious and welcoming at the end of the day. Enjoy breakfast at the small wooden table, or outside in finer weather, and map out your plans for the day. For the more adventurous, there are several canoe, kayak and paddleboarding shops in Looe, with the choice to hire or go on a guided tour. Otherwise, hit the gorgeous coastal walking paths, following the cliffs and coastline and even passing a few sheltered little beaches.

You’ll discover plenty of hidden gems from the moment you step foot on the 25-acre stretch of land, and we guarantee that there’ll be another surprise always waiting around the corner. Find the Elizabethan ruins outside, along with orchards, paddocks and woodland designed by Sir Humphrey Repton in 1972.  

If you can resist the lure of the roses, honeysuckle, and jasmine mixed together in a sweet floral scent outside, you might be able to explore the wonder of the home instead. Read in the light of the sprawling arched windows or come together in the drawing room each evening for a glass of port. Run your fingers over period pieces and gilded mirror frames as you stroll to the generous kitchen for another cup of coffee.

There's also a convenient kitchenette for preparing breakfast and quick lunches, but it's less than a ten-minute drive into some of Cornwall's prettiest villages and some great food. Order the catch of the day at one of the seafood restaurants in Looe, or wander around Polperro's narrow cobbled streets until you come across a traditional pub. Sandy beaches and clear waters are also a short five-minute drive from home. The two beaches at nearby Talland are lovely for paddling or rock pooling. Further afield, Lantic Bay is only accessible by foot, meaning fewer crowds. For the ultimate relaxation, it's back home for a glass of champagne and an alfresco bath under the stars.

This building started its life as a dairy but, thanks to a complete renovation along with the neighbouring homes, it's now a cosy cottage ideal for switching yourself off from the world. Though redesigned for modern living, wandering around we were awestruck by just how well this home marries its traditional past with stylish modernity. The stone exterior, timber beams and wooden floors retain the dairy feel, but shiplap-clad white walls and chic kitchen cupboards emphasise the light, and the silver wood burning stove offers a futuristic twist on a farmhouse classic. It's almost a surprise inside when you consider your surroundings, a rural and well looked-after working farm. Outside you've got your own courtyard too, a suntrap perfect for barbecues and listening to birdsong and the occasional moo and baa. The rolling Cornish countryside is right on your doorstep, while the ancient market town of Liskeard is just three miles away. If you fancy a day at the seaside, Looe and Seaton are a six-mile drive away.

Though this home in Looe is a bit of a climb, we think it's worth it. Once you reach the top of the steep lane, you'll have a magnificent view of the boats bobbing along the East Looe River from the private deck. It's a pretty sight, and thanks to the table and chairs, you'll be able to savour the scenery day or night alongside alfresco meals and evening cocktails. The inside makes the most of the location, too – not only do the Victorian bay windows in the lounge and bedrooms flood the rooms with light, but they also show off the water views. Cooking is anything but a chore in the sleek kitchen - it has everything you need to rustle up a delicious dinner, including a kitchen island for light bites. On rainy days, snuggle up in the living area – there's a DVD player, Netflix, a PS3 for gamers and an array of board games to play – but when the weather is nice, there's no better place to soak up the sun than East Looe Beach. It's an eight-minute walk away, so grab a towel and hit the sand. Also within walking distance are lots of traditional pubs, independent restaurants and local cafes if you're not in the mood to cook, and with the Eden Project just over a half hour's drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring South East Cornwall.

Located on a working farm six miles from Looe and Seaton where there are two other homes, this country retreat is a dream for rural adventurers. Stepping through the front door, we were hit by how well the living space beautifully marries traditional cottage living with modern style – the painted exposed stonework is a particularly stunning nod to the home's former life as a barn. Hardwood floors and beamed ceilings in the bedrooms also hint at the home’s history, while the white walls and blue accents remind you that the sea is never too far away. The home’s private garden is the perfect spot to listen to the morning birdsong or to fire up the barbecue on balmier evenings. On colder nights, board games await on the sofa by the wood-burning stove. As well as the private outdoor space, the home boasts an acre of beautifully landscaped gardens, ideal for picnics and walking the dog. And with so many landmarks and the South West Coast Path a short drive away, there are plenty of outdoor escapades to be had – fitting for life on the farm.

Boconnoc is a little parish just a few miles outside of Lostwithiel, one of Cornwall's most sought-after rural villages. Staying here will give you the comfort of choosing whether you prefer the peace and quiet of the estate or the somewhat livelier compact village up the road where you can find a few brilliant gastropubs. Of course, nothing is stopping you from taking the car to other places like Fowey and the Eden Project as the whole of the peninsula is well-marked and the roads can easily take you quite far in under an hour. The cottage itself is a beautifully refurbished affair, draped in bold colours and furnished with comfortable furniture. You'll get plenty of light, access to the estate's tennis courts and games room, as well as the option of getting fresh seasonal produce delivered from the kitchen garden. Set over three floors, all facing the sea just steps away, it's part of a gleaming new development of a handful of striking, contemporary houses. Decked out in grey and black, with balconies and terraces featuring clear glass balustrades, it's a delightful spot with some pretty impressive added luxuries.

We enter via the games room and utility area on the ground floor, where you'll find a pool table and – as odd as it may sound – a dog shower. Perfect for washing the sand from your furry friend, it's a unique feature we think could make all the difference to your stay. There's a ground floor bedroom and bathroom – perfect if some guests prefer a little more privacy – and stairs lead up to the large kitchen and impressive living room. Here you can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and access both a small balcony and a side terrace with an outdoor dining table. It also happens to house a private hot tub with sea views.

The two remaining bedrooms and bathrooms are on the top floor and it's here you'll find our favourite room. The main bedroom is simply stunning, with a private balcony and a large en-suite bathroom with a glass wall so that, from the raised bathtub, you can not only see the TV but also out through the patio doors to the sea. 

Perfect for a group of friends or a family here to relax on the beach, it's only a short walk to the Whitsand Bay Golf Course, and a cute café, with plenty of big attractions within a short drive.

Once part of the Lanhydrock Estate, this recently converted barn sports a contemporary look and plenty of modern comforts without losing any of its traditional charm. Original timber beams and exposed stone walls hark back to the barn's heyday, but the electric car charging point, rainfall shower and Sonos speakers are just a few of the 21st-century updates. This is the perfect spot for a family to unwind in the Cornish countryside. While parents rustle up a meal in the kitchen, kids can hang out in their own room, playing on the Xbox One. On summer evenings, everyone will enjoy a barbecue in the courtyard before retreating inside to the cosy living area for a movie night, but when the weather turns nippy, cuddle up by the log burner instead. There's plenty to get up to in the local area, too. You're almost equidistant from both the North and South coasts of Cornwall. The nearby holiday destination of Lostwithiel is only four miles away and offers a few brilliant places to eat, but you'll also be staying quite near to the Eden Project and the seaside wonders of Fowey. While the outside of this cottage is pleasantly traditional, the insides are bold and stylish. There are plenty of vivid colours, soft forniture that you can melt into after a long day of exploring, and a lovely wood-burning stove. If you want to focus on relaxation, not household chores, you can get fresh seasonal produce delivered from the garden kitchen and even book a private chef to whip up something magical with them. The host also offers regular cleaning and a little bird told us that there will be a little Cornish present waiting for you on arrival.

When you imagine a stereotypically Cornish cottage, this quaint whitewashed home covered in cascading roses can’t be far from the mark. 

Inside, this romance continues. The soft-hued interior is cosy and oh-so-delicate, with pretty pinks and soft greys mixed with nautical touches and vintage-style furnishings. That being said, the kitchen and bathroom lie on the more contemporary side.

Out through the back door, guests also get the run of a lush green garden with sea views, which you can admire while sitting on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. An added bonus comes in the shape of a sea-blue summer house full of candy-coloured cushions just waiting for you to recline with a good book.

In the local area, the pretty fishing port of Looe can be reached in around fifteen minutes on foot, while the sandy Plaidy Beach is only five minutes' walk. If you're in the mood for a longer excursion, the South West Coast Path is easily reached, too.

With a waterfront position, it looks out across the estuary from all the main rooms so you can watch the water from morning to night. In the little village of Polruan, you'll be just opposite the popular town of Fowey, known for its trendy shops and eateries. An unusual home, you enter from ground level to an immaculate and bright open-plan living room. Thanks to the slope, although it's ground level at the front of the house, you'll feel you've stepped into a top floor apartment when you see the views from the rear. With vaulted ceilings and skylights, the all-white space is modern and comfortable, with a smart kitchen, big dining table and cosy seating area. Patio doors open to a private deck – the perfect spot to sit back with a glass of wine and just take it all in. Downstairs you'll find all the bedrooms and bathrooms – three with river views – and outside you have access across the lawn to a small mooring on the waterfront. With a shop and a pub just a few steps away from the home, you could easily spend your days here, but it's just a quick car ferry ride from the quay across to Fowey, or follow the coastal path for a hike towards Lantic Bay beach.

You only need to take a few steps down to arrive at the waterfront, where you can dip your toes in the sea or go paddleboarding. If you prefer a long, sandy beach, then Tregantle Beach is only a short drive away. And, when you fancy a day trip, head into Plymouth to learn about the port city's rich maritime history.

But that's not the only reason we adore it – one look at the far-reaching views and you'll fall in love with it, too. Set over four levels, it's a bit of climb up to the fourth-floor lounge but trust us – it's worth every step. From up here, you've got a bird's eye view of the estuary, pretty Cornish coastline and the sparkling ocean, and the best spot to take it all in is the sunny roof terrace. Pour yourself a glass of wine (or a glass of juice for the little ones) and relish in the unforgettable sunsets, watching as the tide ebbs and flows. Then, when you've had your fill of the scenery (if that's even possible), make your way downstairs to the country-style kitchen for a family dinner before snuggling up in the sumptuous beds.

With its quaint boutiques and local eateries hiding all sorts of hidden treasures, there's plenty in Fowey to explore. Miles of idyllic coastline and countryside are ideal for walks, while harbourside cafes are the perfect spots to relax with a coffee before hiring a boat and setting off on an afternoon on the river. And, with an excellent pub next door, you won't even need to worry about cooking – sounds like heaven to us.

Tucked away in the pretty port town of Fowey, this cottage is all about elegance, simplicity and quality. However, the home's interior is well worth your attention, too. Certain features have been retained from the building's industrious past, including wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonework, but otherwise, the design is bright and contemporary.

Not only is there a homely wood-burning stove in the main space, but there's a games room with a ping-pong table and darts board in a section that was once a cattle shed, plus lots of equipment for outdoor games beside the forecourt and lawned area. There are other footpaths that lead off into the countryside, but you can also stroll down to the banks of the River Tamar, on which there's a two-hour window every day when it's safe to use it for water sports.
