If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

On the other hand, Holywell Bay has one of the most beautiful beaches in the county. You’ll be pleased to know it's only a five-minute walk from your door, where alongside stunning scenery, you’ll find a gorgeous coastal path, and a handful of charming beachside cafes and eateries. Refuel on local produce at the Gull Rocks Bar & Coffee House at the beach’s entrance after an afternoon spent splashing about, and take in the stunning vistas afforded by its prime location. The Treguth Inn, hailing back to the thirteenth century also awaits just five minutes away, while several more traditional pubs and desirable restaurants can be found within a fifteen-minute drive. The choice is all yours. 

A short twenty-minute drive away is the Gannel Estuary, which separates neighbouring Crantock village from Newquay. Have a go at canoeing in the estuary, or try your hand at paddle-boarding over in Crantock. On quieter days, why not go for fish and chips followed by some ice cream in idyllic fishing villages such as Mevagissey, Mousehole or Gorran Haven, all within an hour's drive? Tucked away on a quiet lane in Cubert, a small village on the North Coast of Cornwall, this cottage is just the place to recharge your batteries. Once a piggery and hay barn, many of the original features are still inside, from the vaulted timber beam ceilings to the exposed stonework. Of course, the beach offers something completely different depending on the weather. Blow away the cobwebs on a windy walk, brave a bracing dip, or soak up the sun on the sand. As for the surfing? That's a year-round pursuit. There's no such thing as cold water, just the wrong gear. And there are plenty of local surf shops that can kit you out. Away from the beach, the town beckons with an excellent selection of seafood restaurants and cool cafes with some classic Cornish fare too. Who doesn't love a pasty? Families will love the zoo and aquarium, while couples can enjoy the sunset from the comfort of a contemporary home with views to die for.

This seaside cottage is located a few streets back from the sea; but as it’s situated atop a hill, it still boasts wonderful ocean views. Take in these panoramic vistas from the master bedroom or walk on down to the beach to experience it all in person – just a three-minute stroll away. 

The private balcony is idyllically set up for a glass of wine as the sun sets in the balmy sky come evening time. With four bedrooms for eight guests, this coastal getaway is ideal for an extended family. The back garden contains plenty of isolated seating spaces, perfect for a summer barbecue, dining alfresco or simply soaking in the sun. 

The inside is also spacious, with a large open-plan kitchen and dining room and a piano in the entrance hall. We especially love the conservatory; where you can enjoy the sunshine without stepping outdoors. However, we’d recommend making a beeline for Newquay’s celebrated Lusty Glaze Beach and the abundance of surfboards, wet suits and bodyboards that are available to rent. With food and drink options aplenty, a day on the beach simply isn't complete without cornish ice cream in the afternoon or a good old fashioned fish and chips come dinnertime.

There are many marvellous things about this wood-panelled cottage, but its unique location at Mawgan Porth has to be the highlight. It's set right on the sand, with a private path bringing you down to the shoreline – meaning you can dip your toes in the sea within seconds of closing the door. The outdoor deck has a hot tub, where you can watch the sun go down with a glass of wine, along with a free-standing bath tub and dining area, for alfresco meals with a view of the Cornish coast. Inside, large windows usher in loads of sunlight, and a fireplace brings warmth on those cooler evenings. The unique bedrooms feature plush beds with ornate headboards, as well as one delightful four-poster bed fitted with sumptuous white curtains. Take a short drive to sample Padstow's famous seafood restaurants, admire the Bedruthan cliffs or enrol in surf school at Watergate Bay – there's something for everyone in this charming spot in North Cornwall.

There are lots of things that impressed us about this cute cottage close to the North Cornish coastline. First off, there's a lot of room inside considering it's only for two people, with the modern corner kitchen particularly large — and well-equipped for that matter. This generosity with space will have contributed towards the M2 Accessibility Rating it received from Visit England, which marks the single-level property out as suitable for guests with reduced mobility and part-time wheelchair users. What's more, there's a private sandstone patio complete with alfresco seating and a hot tub from which to enjoy summer evening sunsets. If you prefer to watch this while sitting on the sand with the sound of the waves lapping nearby, Perranporth Beach is less than ten minutes' drive. Similarly, the towns of Truro and Newquay only take a quarter of an hour to reach by car.

Lord of the Isles

This Cornwall home might be compact, but it definitely does the job. Not only is it wonderfully bright with all the right furnishings to make it feel cosy, but it also puts you within easy access to Perranporth Beach. 

Stroll to find where golden sand meets the Atlantic and wander the stretching beach until you’ve come across the perfect spot to spend the day. Perranporth is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts, so why not sign up for snorkelling or surfing lessons? You’ll find quite a few restaurants in the surrounding – one only a minute away from your front door – but we recommend fish and chips to pay homage to the coastal location.
