If, like us, you do love to be beside the seaside, this is a great choice of holiday home. This gorgeous home can be found on the hill behind Mousehole, under a mile away, in the traditional village of Paul. There you’ll find a cosy pub and a 15th-century parish church – if you’re looking for authentic English charm, look no further. It’s in the heart of the Cornish countryside but still close to the coast, making it popular with hikers and surfers alike. We love Sennen beach for the waves, but Penzance is just as easy to get to if you prefer building sandcastles. 

The house has been recently refurbished with much love. Muted hues and natural textiles are key to the style of this laid-back, comfortable home-from-home. When you’re not lounging inside or dining at the farmhouse-style table, you’ll likely be enjoying the fabulous outside space. 

Let the kids tire themselves out playing on the lawn, in the Wendy house, on the swings, or playing table tennis. Set over three floors, this former fisherman's loft is Grade II listed and has just the right balance of character features and modern, coastal-inspired styling. On the ground floor, a modern, eat-in kitchen provides everything you'll need for cooking at home, while the comfortable living room upstairs has the home's main entrance, an electric fire and a charming window seat. The top floor bedrooms are pretty special and we particularly love the vaulted ceilings and clever internal porthole windows. From the master bedroom, you can even see across to St Clement's Isle and beyond – what could be better? Stroll to the nearby, shops, cafes and restaurants or drive to Lamorna Cove (ten minutes) or Penzance (fifteen minutes).

Stepping foot inside this former hay barn, the interiors might surprise you. We loved this home’s wooden deck – with stunning sea views, a dining table, barbecue, two loungers and Adirondacks facing the ocean, it’s fully equipped for time well-spent outside. Factor in that you’re less than a ten-minute walk from the beach and you have a real winner. Meander down the South West Coast Path to laidback Sennen Cove with its stretch of golden sand and tropical-blue water. Here Cornish fishermen brush shoulders with tousle-haired surfers. We recommend renting a board and catching a wave – there are two highly-rated surf schools in the area. When you return home, hit the outdoor shower and set your wetsuits to dry in the warm utility room before heading inside, where you’ll find it’s just as lovely as its surroundings – smart and minimal with touches of nautical chic. We especially love the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area. Kick back on the sofas and play a board game or puzzle all together. And for the full experience, we highly recommend a classic Cornish pasty or fish and chips on the beach for a satisfying lunch. 

Return home and wash off the sand in your outdoor shower before enjoying a few drinks in the garden. The barbecue is ready to go to cook up a feast, or you could enjoy a homecooked dinner around the dining table inside if the weather starts to chill. There's nothing more homely than gathering around with family and friends in a Cornish cottage, while the traditional fireplace warms you up from the inside out.

Situated in Mousehole, one of Cornwall’s prettiest fishing villages, this cottage is a cosy stay from which to explore the coast and beyond. The interiors are neutral-toned and homespun, with the occasional nod to the abode’s nautical surroundings. Spend late mornings pottering around the kitchen-living space; slather Cornish clotted cream on scones and enjoy with a pot of tea on the sun trap patio. Slip on your sandals and take a stroll along the harbour, just metres from your doorstep. Dip in and out of locally-owned galleries and cafes before settling in with an ice-cool beverage by the water’s edge. When you’re keen to expend a little more energy, lace up your walking shoes and set off on the fifty-four-minute ramble to Lamorna Cove Beach. As soon as hunger bites, take the ten-minute drive to the town of Newlyn for an irresistible selection of seafood restaurants – the Michelin Guide recommended Tolcarne Inn was one of our favourites.

Harbour Hideaway

Out of all the sights in Cornwall, St Michael's Mount is one of the most beautiful. This island community is just off the coast of Marazion, with a medieval church and castle sitting atop its rocky terrain. Just a mile and a half from this striking scene, this house is the ideal base for exploring everything the region has to offer. This sleek, modern apartment is dressed in blue-and-white hues, in a nod to its coastal setting. Sash windows look out to rolling fields and trees, and adorning the walls, you may spy a few pieces that were painted by Cornish artists. But for the strongest connection to the nearby sea and the local area, nothing compares to the beach view from your private patio. You’ll love sitting out here for alfresco dining on a balmy evening, just as much as a wholesome brunch on a bright morning. After a long day of exploring beaches and glorious natural landscapes, curl up with a novel and a tumbler of whisky by the shiny, wood-burning stove (after the kids have gone to bed of course).

This home, located on a quiet residential street above Carbis Bay’s Parthrepta Beach, is the perfect base from which solo travellers, couples or small families can explore the coastal towns and beaches of St Ives Bay including Carbis Bay, which is just a fifteen-minute walk from your door. The annexe offers a small gravel courtyard at the back of the home which is ideal for sun-soaked mornings enjoying a leisurely breakfast alfresco, or an afternoon tea with fresh Cornish cream, jam and scones. 

Wander Carbis Bay’s crescent of white sands and turquoise waters or go on a water adventure and grab a paddleboard or kayak from the beach-based surf school. For beautiful walks, we can highly recommend the coast path from here to St Ives, which showcases spectacular views over the bay, and the 1.9km walk has a gentle ascent meaning the whole family can enjoy the scenery and bracing sea air. Or, if that sounds like too much for you, the single-track railway of the St Erth line follows that same path along the coast offering passengers an incredible vantage point to see all of St Ives Bay and beyond.  

After a busy day, the home’s open-plan living space will provide you with a comfortable sofa to unwind from your beach days, while the dining area beckons you to share meals and discuss your plans for the following day over a delicious dinner.

This bright four-story house has been designed with comfort and style in mind. Don’t be fooled by the ultra-modern, white facade; this place still retains a nod to its heritage with exposed stones from the original fisherman's cottage. In summer, light pours through the large windows and the log burner and underfloor heating keeps you cosy in the colder months. A crisp, white background lets the seaside watercolours on the wall speak for themselves and the big kitchen is more than spacious enough for the buzz of family breakfast time. On sunny days, head out to the wooden deck looking out to sea (with an outdoor heater available), or tuck yourself away on the dining terrace for an alfresco seafood feast from the local fishmonger.

The home faces a quiet lane leading to the centre of the bustling and charming town of St. Ives, where you'll find excellent seafood restaurants, cafés, indie galleries and soft-sanded beaches. In a tightly contested field, St Ives is one of the most idyllic coastal towns in all of Cornwall, a fact that you'll come to appreciate when gazing out the bay window in the living room of this home. From the comfort of a cosy chair, you can gaze out across the glistening bay and beaches in the distance.

Swivel around in your seat and you'll find a home that keeps it reassuringly safe and simple with the design, with white walls, wooden floors and the odd piece of nautically themed artwork making for a space that's instantly calming. The glossy kitchen is clearly influenced by the trend for all things minimalist, while the boxy bathtubs upstairs share similar traits – and offer a lovely way to finish the day.

When it comes to seeing the best of the locale, you're in an excellent position to do so. Porthmeor Beach is only a seven-minute walk away and the Tate art gallery sits close by, too. Even closer to home – three minutes on foot, to be precise – you can get a primer on the work and life of Barbara Hepworth at the museum and sculpture garden dedicated to her art.

This home has a rustic feel to it, with reclaimed local stone and natural cedar cladding that blends seamlessly. Open the panoramic windows and make your way down to the south-facing garden for a cup of coffee and fresh air while the kids play on the grass. Returning inside, you'll notice that the living room is flooded with natural light as you take a seat on the Tetrad Sofas and place your second coffee refill on the reclaimed oak coffee table. 

Carbis Bay is a charming seaside town known for its stunning stretch of white sand, turquoise waters, and sheltered conditions. Sunbathe on the beach before indulging in some local fish and chips, or if you're feeling more athletic, go kayaking. Take the twenty-nine-minute walk to St Ives Farmers Market, which is held at The Guildhall every Thursday until 2 p.m. throughout the year. If you appreciate art, visit the Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives before wandering through the cobbled streets of a traditional seaside town to reach the lighthouse.

Situated in a private terrace, with no passing traffic, take in the turquoise ocean vistas from the beautiful, sunny terrace, surrounded by pink hydrangeas, with a glass of Cornish fizz. Or head inside, where you'll be greeted with large bay windows – admire the town, harbour and the sparkling sea from here. Our favourite spot has to be the plush velvet window seat in the bedroom. With two living areas and several outdoor spaces, this home is perfect for a family or group of friends looking to spread out. To top it all, there's parking for up to two cars, which is a rare bonus in St. Ives.

The vibrant town centre is a five-minute walk, where you'll find plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. It's the same walking distance to Porthminster Beach, one of St Ives's six beaches – the others are Porthgwidden, Harbour, Porthmeor, Lambeth Walk and Bamaluz – so you're spoilt for choice. For art lovers, the Barbara Hepworth Museum is a seven-minute saunter, while the Tate St Ives is eleven minutes on foot.

Bounded on two sides by National Trust land, this picture-perfect Cornwall home is in the middle of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the perfect place to come and get away from it all. You aren't wholly isolated here, though, as the charming local village of Treen has a shop, a cafe and a good, old-fashioned Cornish pub just a two-minute walk away. Also within walking distance is Pedn Vounder Beach, only fifteen minutes away on foot, which is an excellent place to laze in the sand and splash around in the turquoise sea. Built in the 1930s, this idyllic hideaway has been in the host's family for decades, and you can sense that welcoming atmosphere as soon as you step through the front door. Original period features have been beautifully brought back to life, including a gorgeous walnut fireplace with a cosy wood-burning stove. There's plenty of snug seating – whether you want to stretch out, curl up with a book from the library or admire the views – and the kitchen is designed with entertaining in mind. But the garden is the real stand-out. It's set on several different levels, with all sorts of nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away in. It's the ideal spot to enjoy afternoon tea and evening cocktails, surrounded by apple trees, an herb garden and wild hydrangea bushes that feel like something out of a fairytale.
