A fourteen-minute drive from the striking shores of the Hartland Heritage Coast, this rural escape really puts the ‘treat’ in retreat. It’s impossible not to be charmed by this wooden roundhouse in East Thorne. Its cylindrical design and delightful gardens bring a magical vibe that's sure to start off your holiday with a smile. Step inside to find a gorgeous wood-beamed ceiling and wood-burning stove in the main living space. While this hearth is the perfect setting for cosying up together on chilly evenings, there are even more activities for sunny days. Your private, outdoor area is spectacular – play games on the lawn, savour alfresco lunches on the picnic bench, grill up dinner on the barbecue, set up a campfire, and (best of all) soak in the hot tub under the stars all night.  We think a glass of champagne wouldn’t go amiss in this luxury setting. When you’ve spent enough time in the tub, head inside to lie back on the sumptuous bed and look up – find yet another stargazing spot via the ceiling porthole. Keep your eyes peeled for shooting stars.

Through the Leaves

One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Rock House Cottage

Just over a mile from the village of Stithians, down by the River Kennall, this stone cottage is set in the 7-acre land surrounding an old farmhouse. But despite its incredibly rural setting, staying here is far from the rustic experience you might expect. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Upon arrival, your host will warmly welcome you with a hamper full of luxury Cornish fare and home-baked goods to start your holiday right. While you nibble and sip, you can start exploring the cosy home. Fluffy rugs, plush sofas, and wooden floors create a sense of warmth and softness in the living space, but floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in. And the great outdoors are particularly great in this case. Under the wooden decking, get ready to pop champagne and soak in the hot tub. Or perhaps you’d rather recline on the outdoor sofas by the wood-burner, have a barbecue, or play a few rounds of table tennis? As you’re just a fifteen-minute drive to Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, you’ll also need to pack a picnic one day and head for the shore (don’t forget to grab the beach towels that your host kindly provides). 

Champagne Bubbles

If you’re looking for a quirky home for a romantic trip – or even a family adventure – without giving up on a little rustic luxury, this modern yurt just a short eleven-minute drive from Bude and its sandy beaches ticks all the right boxes. Unsurprisingly, the hot tub is our favourite feature – we can picture evening soaks gazing up at the stars with a glass of fizz in hand. A close second is its cosy interiors kept nice and toasty by the wood-burning stove and underfloor heating. This one's a real comforter. A modern kitchen and communal pizza oven make it a great option for budding chefs planning to roll up their sleeves and rustle up delicious meals to be enjoyed alfresco on the picnic table. Whether you're inside or out this spot offers space for a bit of rest and relaxation away from all the fuss back home. And when you're feeling exploratory, discover the South West Coast Path and its stunning scenery, only a thirty-minute drive away – just remember to pack your walking boots for when you arrive. 

Embers & Steam

Set in the vibrant Cornish sailing community of Fowey, alongside several Victorian buildings, this apartment is like something out of a fairytale. Designed to an incredibly high standard by your host, Alison, the interior feels very in keeping with the seaside locale without ever coming across as a cliche. There's not a deckchair stripe in sight. Instead, you're treated to sculptural driftwood lamps, moody seascape paintings, and a sophisticated palette of deep blues and grey tones that reflect the British weather more accurately than the usual sunshine yellow. If you can bear to leave the home, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and places of interest in the immediate vicinity. Fowey is a beautiful harbourside town with public events occurring throughout the year. The local community is a healthy mix of all ages who are warm and friendly and adept at making newcomers feel welcome.

Wide Eyes

Situated looking out over the blue flag awarded Widemouth Bay, the charming holiday retreat showcases breath-taking panoramic views of the Cornish coastline. Brand new for 2023, this idyllic lodge and shepherd's hut offer a perfect blend of comfort, tranquility, and natural beauty.
The spacious open-plan living area is thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind and adorns traditional decor. The doors open onto your private deck, flooding the space with natural light and offering stunning views of the surrounding vistas.
Guests can make use of the well-equipped kitchen and all necessary amenities for preparing delicious meals. Dine alfresco on the beautiful deck, enjoy the evening sunset while using the BBQ or relax in the garden on outdoor seating.
The lodge accommodates two guests in a king size bedroom with an en suite shower room. The adjacent shepherd's hut can sleep two more guests in a king size bed with an en suite bathroom.
Located just a couple of miles from Bude, Widemouth Bay's wide expanse of open sand is perfect for exploring rock pools. This beach is also an ideal base for discovering North Cornwall, Devon coastline, and historic villages like Tintagel and Boscastle, rich in legends and folklore.

Idyllic Seaside Retreat

Part of an old farmhouse that's been braving the Cornish weather for over seven hundred years. Sitting outside in the morning sun of the east-facing courtyard makes you appreciate the old rugged stone façade, especially compared to the sleek and cosy interior. You'll get a whole wing to yourself, complete with two dining spots outdoors and comfortable loungers in the garden. In the colder months, you'll be spending more time in the sitting room, surrounded by books and a large flat-screen TV with Technics cinema sound for an immersive experience. For a bit more peace and quiet, escape to the reading room which has even more books available, or relax in the pleasantly quiet bedroom. From here, the French doors open up to a cosy spot for two where you can admire the sunrise and plan your day. The nearest wild beach is well within walking distance, but the headline attraction is up the road in Bude. If you're up for some sightseeing, take the car down to Tintagel to see the ruins of King Arthur's mythical castle. 

Coastal Soul

This award-winning Victorian Gothic-style cottage set on a former daffodil farm makes for the ultimate romantic escape. While we'd probably leave the kid with grandma this time, a sofa bed and cot are available should you wish to plan a cosy stay for three. It's a studio arrangement, yet a separate eat-in kitchen and private garden give you more options than your typical single-room setup. You'll find a hot tub, patio table and chairs outside, so in the warmer months, you can sit and enjoy the sunshine for hours. And with all there is to do around here, you may not make it inside until bedtime. You'll have use of the tennis court, orchard picnic area, basketball hoop, woodland, nature reserve and river beach. Your hosts can also hook you up with discounted tickets to the Lost Gardens of Heligan or organise remarkable experiences such as foraging workshops, paddleboarding, spa treatments or afternoon tea. Did we mention that some of Cornwalls most gorgeous beaches are just thirteen miles away? Back home, round off an explorative day curled up by the crackling fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand. Whether you're here for a romantic couple's escape or quality (small) family time, this home has so much to offer inside and out. 

Tom Thumb

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop. 

Run with the River

This waterfront apartment boasting sweeping views of Salcombe's estuary lets you do bucket-and-spade breaks in style and luxury. With each serene bedroom offering an en-suite bathroom, it's an excellent choice for guests who value a little extra privacy. When you're ready to dive into the seaside action, Salcombe's bustling high street – lined with local pubs and restaurants – is just a stroll away. In need of some rejuvenation? You're welcome to use the swish hotel spa and swimming pool right next door for a discounted rate. 

The Fisherman's Tale

Slow down for a while at this luxurious shepherd’s hut hideaway, nestled deep in the rolling countryside between Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley. Recline in the log-fired hot tub (there’s room for two) with nothing but patchwork farmlands on the horizon (and the occasional sheep or pony trotting by). Enjoy evenings roasting marshmallows on a fire pit (which handily doubles as your barbecue) beneath a blanket of stars - on a clear night, you can see right to the milky way. Or take things indoors to curl up on the sofa with a good book –⁠ the wood-burning stove (and central heating) will keep things toasty. And when it’s time to lay your head, a king-size bed adorned with crisp-white linens is waiting for a blissful night’s sleep. Should you ever be tempted to leave this little idyll, you’re just a thirteen-minute drive from the charming historic village of Tavistock. Mosey about its bustling shops, and if you time it right, the weekly farmers market. Then dive into the traditional inn for real ales, good upper-crust pub food, and a warm welcome. 

Under Starry Skies

This delightful stone cottage is nestled in the heart of the quintessential Cornish fishing village of Boscastle. It was built in 1908, but a renovation in 2016 saw the home fitted with every modern comfort you could need. This cottage is wonderfully snug, retaining its characterful original features such as exposed beams and wooden flooring. The interior has benefitted from a creative’s touch, with quirky furnishings and bold artwork creating a modern space. The cosy sitting room is decorated in such a way that you'll want to spend hours inside wiling away the time with board games in front of the fire. We also love the bathroom with its lino floor and rustic bathtub. However, this home’s perfect location means there’s also lots of fun to be had outside of the garden – even with that sea view. Whip up a picnic in the kitchen or make a smoothie with the Nutribullet and head up to Beeny Cliff, a dramatic headland immortalised in the poem by Thomas Hardy. Or alternatively, walk into the village and watch the boats go past in Boscastle’s historic harbour, less than a fifteen-minute stroll from your front door.
