This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away.

With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play.

Tucked away in the Eskdale valley, this cosy cottage has the best of the Lake District at its feet. Inside, the wooden beams, brick walls and homespun furnishings have a lasting effect. It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Dazzling white from top to toe, with modern textiles adding a pop of colour, this place is anything but twee. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond. 

But the clincher here has to that vaulted ceiling living space on the second floor. Mighty exposed beams add the wow-factor and large skylights flood the room with natural daylight. With such vast space, it’s no surprise this apartment was historically the former gallery space of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. 

When you’re ready to soak up the gentle hustle and bustle of Ambleside, you won’t have far to go. Take your pick from the many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis, for its lip-smacking pizza and pasta – all just a three-minute stroll away.

Then all that’s left to do is head for the fells for bracing walks around the spell bounding lakes – there are trails just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Or, for a classic Lakeland experience, hop on a boat to cruise Lake Windermere (a short stroll away).

Seeking a cosy couple’s retreat with nature on your doorstep? This contemporary cottage in Ambleside more than fits the bill. From the open-plan living area, you can admire the countryside views while snuggling up in front of the wood burner. Step outside, and there’s a hot tub waiting to help you unwind – just the spot for stargazing after a busy day. If you can tear yourself away, a trip to Lake Windermere is a must, where you can while away the hours hiking the shores or on a boat cruise across the water. Pets are also welcome to tag along for a small fee, and you'll find plenty of dog walks on your doorstep.

Whistling Waters

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

Located on a quiet residential street less than a ten-minute walk from the bustling town of Ambleside, this home is the perfect getaway for exploring the natural beauty of the Lake District. Fresh and recently fully refurbished, this delightful, contemporary space is full of thoughtful details that make it sing with style. The Lake District National Park is truly the beating heart of Cumbria. With its magnificent waterways and rugged mountains, this region really takes you into the wilderness of England. Near its central point, the village of Chapel Stile is a quiet and tranquil settlement in otherwise dramatic surroundings. Your cottage is around a ten-minute walk from its traditional high street, so you’ve always got the option of stopping in for a pint of local ale – that’s if the views don’t keep you at home.

Sitting on an elevated position looking across Great Langdale Valley and Lingmoor Fell, this house boasts incredible panoramas. Standing on the front patio, you might need to take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and gaze out to the majestic valley. Once you’ve gotten used to these views, perch on the outdoor seating with a G&T in hand and toast to the start of your holiday.

Even indoors, the views aren’t far away. We love the triple set of windows in the lounge, where Scandi-style minimalist furniture meets framed forest scenes. With a detailed map of the region on the wall, you can plot your next hike from the comfort of the sofa (with a pot of Earl Grey alongside). And after the trek, you can soak your muscles in the luxe tub upstairs.

What's better than a stay in a luxurious Plum-worthy home? A stay in two luxurious Plum-worthy homes – of course. This twin listing combines two of our homes – Brockram Barn & Keld Barn – totalling eight bedrooms which can accommodate up to sixteen guests. The sprawling outdoor space and the fact that it's set over two properties means that there's plenty of room to catch a moment for yourself, even during a large family get-together or a company offsite. But, of course, if you want to come together, there's ample space for that too. The interiors are decorated in a modern country style, with soaring ceilings, beautiful exposed beams and stunning stone floors. Both homes have huge common areas and large connected gardens where you can sit back with a glass of something special and watch the sun sink over the Cumbrian countryside. If the urge to explore should hit, then you've got the Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines and Lake District within a thirty-minute drive, while the port town of Middlesbrough is a little over an hour away.

Brockram & Keld Barn

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.
