With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. Nestled on the outskirts of the Peak District, this holiday cottage is great for nature lovers and families. Your host can provide equipment for little ones and well-behaved pets are welcome, and there is space for alfresco dining on the large patio. Our favourite spot to unwind is the private hot tub, especially with those countryside views. Indoors, the main staircase has some gaps, so younger children will need supervision. You won't find a washing machine here, but for shorter trips, we think it's a great choice. You'll want a car here – the Peak District National Park is easily reachable, while thrill-seekers will find Alton Towers just a fifteen-minute drive away.

Located on the southeastern edge of the gorgeous Peak District National Park, this stunning ten-bed Georgian mansion is secluded away within an acre of immaculately presented private gardens. With terraced lawns, cute courtyard spaces and a Big Green Egg barbecue, the ornate outdoor areas are perfectly set up for alfresco dining. In fact, the gardens are noteworthy enough to have had an entire episode of BBC's Gardener's World devoted to them.

The home packs in plenty of charm from the moment you enter its grand entrance hall, with eye-catching colourful tiles, an imposing fireplace and elegant antiques. It's a similar story throughout the rest of the ground floor, with the addition of wood panelling in the reading room, large bay windows overlooking the garden in the drawing room, and plenty of light and space beneath the beautiful vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Here, a large pine table sits up to ten adults or fourteen with children – perfect for large gatherings of friends and family.

Upstairs houses the six bedrooms, each with its own unique atmosphere and no less lovely than the last. With a four-poster bed, freestanding tubs in the en-suites and double aspect windows overlooking the luscious gardens, the only dilemma will be which of the three en-suite double bedrooms or two twins to choose. Finally, there's a bunk room that can accommodate four children. 

The ever-popular Peak District, England's oldest national park, is right on your doorstep. There are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to visit, plus rugged, windswept scenery to hike through or simply admire from a fireside armchair in one of its charming pubs. Those with a head for heights might like to try their hand at rock climbing or hot air ballooning, while cycling and hiking are on offer for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

Walking into this beautiful cottage, you’d probably not be able to tell that it is over three-hundred-years old, or that it has a fair amount of experience as a coaching inn. Save for the exposed beams, brickwork, and basic structure, this home’s undergone a complete makeover that’s turned it into a very hospitable, little home. We, of course, love historic touches and found that the ones present here add a bucketload of charm to this home, and the choice of furnishings only further serves to make this space comfortable and inviting. Sink into the plush velvet sofa – by the way, we think the blue around the house brings a brilliant luxe contrast to the space – with the fire crackling at your feet as you catch up on your reading. 

Reading that can also be done outside when the weather is just right. Head out with a cup of coffee and embrace the peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the cathedral when you’ve put your book down for a quick break. 

Back inside, the kitchen – which features a beautiful aga cooker – connects to a dining room by the way of a conservatory, which makes even cooking a social affair as some guests can get breakfast ready whilst others bask in the light streaming in from up above. 

As if this home could get much better, it’s also very close to the famous Peak District National Park and a day out there, admiring the lakes and moors as you hike the round hills, is an absolute must.
