An imposing place, built from local stone some 200 years ago, it's set over three floors and is the star of the show. Elsewhere, the barns have been converted, creating six one-bed cottages and suites around a shared courtyard. This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

This Georgian period manor sits in the bucolic splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The foundations date back to the 15th century and the manor home you see here today was built in 1787. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. There’s an outdoor kitchen with a built-in Argentinian grill and a wood-fired pizza oven for big family meals outside, and there’s a fire pit should you want to watch the sky for shooting stars long into the night. From the various viewpoints around the gardens, you can see why it is thought that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Hound of the Baskervilles while he stayed here.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area.

Bring your bucket and spade, as you’re within easy reach of several beaches. We love paddling at Paignton, which is a twelve-minute drive, and exploring the harbour in Torquay, which is sixteen minutes away. 

If you prefer to keep your feet dry, there’s still plenty to enjoy here. The South West Coastal Path is a dream for hikers and cyclists, and you have all of Dartmoor’s delights to discover too. 

When you’re not exploring, you’ll be relaxing at the cottage. Curl up on the sofa beneath wooden beams for a cosy afternoon in, or spill out onto the courtyard for games in the fresh air. Head out to a pub for dinner, pick up fish and chips, or cook in the well-equipped kitchen. Everything you might need is close to hand at this comfortable and convenient home-from-home.

During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Built by Lord Hamberdon's estate in 1833, this country house commands unbroken views to Haytor Rocks some three miles away. Your hosts have lovingly restored this home over the years, being careful to maintain its original features. As a result, it's got character in spades. The kitchen strikes just the right balance between rustic charm and modern convenience, while the adjacent breakfast room makes it a lovely space for a slow start to the day, and direct garden access comes into its own on sunny mornings. Elsewhere on the ground floor, there's a dining room that's perfect for gathering together as a group and a cosy living room for that post-lunch nap by the fire. Head upstairs, and you'll find two master bedrooms, both with en-suites and stunning views south across the National Park, with a further two bedrooms on the same floor. Outside, the large walled garden enjoys Dartmoor views as far as the eye can see. There's a gorgeous covered seating area that's perfect for eating outdoors, while the bubbling hot tub is just the cherry on top. Far from any light pollution, we can't think of anything better than enjoying a post-dog walk soak as the stars emerge. There's also croquet and swing ball to keep the kids busy. Enjoy excellent walking, cycling, and horse riding directly from your front door. There are also a variety of fantastic local pubs to choose from.

This waterfront apartment has bagged itself a prime position on the banks of the River Dart, with views across the water and out to sea. And with two balconies – one off the living area and one off the main bedroom – there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy them. While the open-plan kitchen is on the small side, it is well-equipped. And if you fancy dining out, just hop on a ferry for the short and scenic trip to Dartmouth, where you’ll find a choice of restaurants and pubs.
