It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

There’s also a badminton set (as sell as a games room for when the weather isn’t cooperating). Step inside and instantly feel at ease with the minimalist, modern interiors or retire to one of three bedrooms with generous super king-size beds and an en-suite bathroom each. It would suit a family of five or six, and being on a single level it's practical for those travelling with toddlers, grandparents or even furry friends, so bring them all!

Perched on a hilltop with beautiful views over the surrounding lush landscape, this characterful home has a fantastic location in the picturesque village of Belstone, on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Turn on the sound system and go for a swim in the fabulous, private indoor pool or dine alfresco on warm evenings. There are three acres of formal gardens and a further three acres of paddocks complete with ponds, streams and a woodland swing to enjoy.

Inside, we love the attention to detail that's been lavished on this unique home with its oriental influences (due to its owner's Shanghai tea trade connections). This place is excellent for a group of friends or large families – there's an internal, ground floor apartment, perfect for the grandparents or anyone wanting a bit more privacy.

We'd be seriously tempted to spend all of our time here, but that would be a shame as there's so much to see nearby. The village of Belstone has a pub and cafe, while the town of Okehampton, with its Waitrose store and independent shops, is five minutes by car. Chagford, known as the "jewel in the heart of Dartmoor", is renowned as a haven for artists and is a twenty-minute drive.

Just half an hour away is the city of Exeter, with its vibrant art scene and range of boutique shops, cafes and bars. Of course, there are plenty of cycling and walking options to explore around Dartmoor too. If you fancy a day at the beach, on the other hand, the North Devon coastline is around an hour away.

For a quintessential Devon break, it doesn't get much better than this elegant Victorian farmstead. Built by Lord Hamberdon's estate in 1833, this country house commands unbroken views to Haytor Rocks some three miles away. Your hosts have lovingly restored this home over the years, being careful to maintain its original features. As a result, it's got character in spades. The kitchen strikes just the right balance between rustic charm and modern convenience, while the adjacent breakfast room makes it a lovely space for a slow start to the day, and direct garden access comes into its own on sunny mornings. Elsewhere on the ground floor, there's a dining room that's perfect for gathering together as a group and a cosy living room for that post-lunch nap by the fire. Head upstairs, and you'll find two master bedrooms, both with en-suites and stunning views south across the National Park, with a further two bedrooms on the same floor. Outside, the large walled garden enjoys Dartmoor views as far as the eye can see. There's a gorgeous covered seating area that's perfect for eating outdoors, while the bubbling hot tub is just the cherry on top. Far from any light pollution, we can't think of anything better than enjoying a post-dog walk soak as the stars emerge. There's also croquet and swing ball to keep the kids busy. Enjoy excellent walking, cycling, and horse riding directly from your front door. There are also a variety of fantastic local pubs to choose from.

This Georgian period manor sits in the bucolic splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The foundations date back to the 15th century and the manor home you see here today was built in 1787. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. There’s an outdoor kitchen with a built-in Argentinian grill and a wood-fired pizza oven for big family meals outside, and there’s a fire pit should you want to watch the sky for shooting stars long into the night. From the various viewpoints around the gardens, you can see why it is thought that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Hound of the Baskervilles while he stayed here.

Slightly further afield, Dunsford Nature Reserve is a few miles downriver, while Castle Drogo is approximately five miles in the opposite direction. This walk will see you pass through 850 hectares of unspoiled nature at the National Trust's Fingle Woods – complete with footpaths, mountain biking trails and yet more wild swimming – and a fantastic waterside pub in Drewsteignton. For small city charm, Exeter is around half an hour's drive. Keen bird-watchers will love Bridesmere Bridge where swallows, house martins and bats can be spotted from a comfortable covered wooden structure, which also makes a scenic yoga platform.

What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

Surrounded by 64 acres of vineyards, orchards and farmland, this luxurious barn conversion puts you between the coastal beauty of the South Devon AONB and Dartmoor National Park. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the Southwest Coast Path to discover secluded bays and white cliffs, or make the twenty-minute drive to Bantham Beach for a day on the soft sand of the classic British seaside. 

Though if you want to stay closer to home, you’ll find plenty of activities right on the estate. Gin and wine tastings are on offer and walking the grounds you’ll come face to face with white-faced Dartmoor sheep and red Devon cattle. Should the weather turn, you’ve got a private indoor swimming pool and a dedicated cinema room with plush red theatre chairs and a big screen to keep you entertained. That's just one of many beauty spots in the surrounding South Devon AONB and once you've worked up a hunger from seeing all the locale has to offer, simply drive over to Salcombe in six minutes and hit up one of the seafront gastropubs.
