The high vaulted ceilings and wooden beams remind you of the building's former use, while the clean colour palette brings it firmly into the 21st century. You'll love lighting the wood burner and getting cosy on the sofa with a glass of wine on winter evenings. Or, if the sun is shining, head outside onto the patio for an alfresco feast hot off the charcoal barbeque. And, there's even a games room where you can finish off the evening with a round of snooker. 

Hikers and cyclists will be in their element, with all of the sprawling Dartmoor National Park to explore. History fans can visit the nearby Castle Drogo and the iron age forts and stone circles scattered across the moorland. One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Perched on a hilltop with beautiful views over the surrounding lush landscape, this characterful home has a fantastic location in the picturesque village of Belstone, on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Turn on the sound system and go for a swim in the fabulous, private indoor pool or dine alfresco on warm evenings. There are three acres of formal gardens and a further three acres of paddocks complete with ponds, streams and a woodland swing to enjoy.

Inside, we love the attention to detail that's been lavished on this unique home with its oriental influences (due to its owner's Shanghai tea trade connections). This place is excellent for a group of friends or large families – there's an internal, ground floor apartment, perfect for the grandparents or anyone wanting a bit more privacy.

We'd be seriously tempted to spend all of our time here, but that would be a shame as there's so much to see nearby. The village of Belstone has a pub and cafe, while the town of Okehampton, with its Waitrose store and independent shops, is five minutes by car. Chagford, known as the "jewel in the heart of Dartmoor", is renowned as a haven for artists and is a twenty-minute drive.

Just half an hour away is the city of Exeter, with its vibrant art scene and range of boutique shops, cafes and bars. Of course, there are plenty of cycling and walking options to explore around Dartmoor too. If you fancy a day at the beach, on the other hand, the North Devon coastline is around an hour away.

Hike through miles of undulating moorlands and granite-topped tors or stroll through picturesque villages and explore the local culture. You're a twenty-five-minute drive from the historic market town of Newton Abbot and just a twelve-minute stroll from the pretty village of Lustleigh. After busy days, fire up the pizza oven and barbecue for an alfresco feast at sunset before snuggling up on the velvet sofas beside the warm glow of the wood-burning stove.

This Georgian period manor sits in the bucolic splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The foundations date back to the 15th century and the manor home you see here today was built in 1787. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. There’s an outdoor kitchen with a built-in Argentinian grill and a wood-fired pizza oven for big family meals outside, and there’s a fire pit should you want to watch the sky for shooting stars long into the night. From the various viewpoints around the gardens, you can see why it is thought that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Hound of the Baskervilles while he stayed here.

Inside, there’s a cosy lounge where you feel the history of aristocratic country escapes radiating from the marble fireplace. A collection of board games provides the analogue entertainment here, alongside a dedicated games room with ping pong and pool. The big dining room can hold banquet-sized feasts and the farmhouse-style kitchen with its massive range cooker is a delight for the chef of the group. For a quintessential Devon break, it doesn't get much better than this elegant Victorian farmstead. Built by Lord Hamberdon's estate in 1833, this country house commands unbroken views to Haytor Rocks some three miles away. Your hosts have lovingly restored this home over the years, being careful to maintain its original features. As a result, it's got character in spades. The kitchen strikes just the right balance between rustic charm and modern convenience, while the adjacent breakfast room makes it a lovely space for a slow start to the day, and direct garden access comes into its own on sunny mornings. Elsewhere on the ground floor, there's a dining room that's perfect for gathering together as a group and a cosy living room for that post-lunch nap by the fire. Head upstairs, and you'll find two master bedrooms, both with en-suites and stunning views south across the National Park, with a further two bedrooms on the same floor. Outside, the large walled garden enjoys Dartmoor views as far as the eye can see. There's a gorgeous covered seating area that's perfect for eating outdoors, while the bubbling hot tub is just the cherry on top. Far from any light pollution, we can't think of anything better than enjoying a post-dog walk soak as the stars emerge. There's also croquet and swing ball to keep the kids busy. Enjoy excellent walking, cycling, and horse riding directly from your front door. There are also a variety of fantastic local pubs to choose from.

Tucked away among the ancient woodland of the Teign Valley, on Dartmoor's northeastern edge, this beautiful semi-detached stone cottage offers you a tranquil rural retreat, far removed from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Inside, your hosts have preserved the home's original character while adding all the modern amenities you could need for a relaxing stay. You'll find a cosy seating area centred around the warming wood burner on the ground floor, with a solid oak dining table adjacent. Elsewhere, the well equipped compact kitchen is a veritable Tardis, with elegant storage solutions making the most of the space.

Upstairs, there are two charming cottage bedrooms. The main room includes an additional single bed that would work well for a child, especially considering the dedicated playroom upstairs on a small mezzanine floor. A stylish family bathroom with a bath is perfect for post-walk soaks.

A private south-facing garden with a table and chairs is a lovely spot to spend a sunny afternoon watching the birds flitting about the feeder. Once the sun sets, listen to a cacophony of local wildlife and gaze up at the stars. Elsewhere in the communal grounds, there's a rustic barn filled with games, communal lawns and a serene lake, one of the best wild swimming spots in the South West.

Slightly further afield, Dunsford Nature Reserve is a few miles downriver, while Castle Drogo is approximately five miles in the opposite direction. This walk will see you pass through 850 hectares of unspoiled nature at the National Trust's Fingle Woods – complete with footpaths, mountain biking trails and yet more wild swimming – and a fantastic waterside pub in Drewsteignton. For small city charm, Exeter is around half an hour's drive. Keen bird-watchers will love Bridesmere Bridge where swallows, house martins and bats can be spotted from a comfortable covered wooden structure, which also makes a scenic yoga platform.

Part of a deluxe farmyard complex of holiday cottages, you’ve got amenities galore on offer in the grounds; a stone circle with fire pit, a heated indoor swimming pool, a games room packed with things for the kids to do, a golf practice area and walks through the woodland trails. If you’re not exploring the hiking trails across the heaths and past tumbling waterfalls, make the thirty-minute drive to the charming market town of Newton Abbot.

At the cottage itself, you’ve got a private patio with a picnic table and built-in stone barbecue for lunch outdoors on sunny days. The living room is natural shades of stone and sand, with a wood-burning stove in the corner should the temperature dip in the evening. This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop. 

Run with the River

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. Your little ones hopefully won’t object to bedtime with the twin rooms one of which is Star Wars-themed and the other which features a dollhouse mounted on the wall and a whimsical fairy wall hanging to decorate. We can’t promise they’ll want to stop playing and go to sleep though.

When the weather is on your side, spill out onto the south facing patio for sunshine all day long. After a tasty barbecue lunch, ramble through Kit Hill Country Park or take the thirty-five-minute drive down to Tregantle Beach for wind-whipped walks along the unspoilt sands. Come home in the late afternoon, salty-haired and ravenous, and dig into hearty fare at the traditional pub, just a fifteen-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub.
