Grab a hefty dose of sea air at this North Devon cottage set within the grounds of a working lighthouse. Granted, the home's exteriors could be more characterful. But the sea views and striking distance to the beach more than make up for that – as do the home's fresh and contemporary interiors. One of four cottages within the lighthouse's grounds, you'll share the wider gardens, but there's a private terrace for alfresco breakfasts, too. It's worth noting you'll need a car as the cottage is blissfully secluded. But Woolacombe Beach and the village of Mortehoe are both just a short drive away.

The Lighthouse Family

Just a few metres from the River Torridge, this home is tucked down a narrow cobbled lane in the heart of postcard-pretty Appledore. It might look like a cute and cosy fisherman's cottage from the outside, but step inside and you'll find three floors of pure luxury. 

Let's start up top, where the converted attic is home to the main bedroom. Striking wooden beams adorn the ceiling, giving a rustic vibe to an otherwise modern and understated decor. Two more stylish bedrooms and a lavish family bathroom – complete with an absolutely lush claw foot, roll top bath – make up the first floor.

On the ground level, the plush lounge has a fireplace for snuggling up on chilly English evenings, while the French doors open up to a heated courtyard which is simply divine – we can't think of a better spot to while away summer evenings, sipping wine and nibbling on snacks rustled up in the glossy kitchen.

This home is perfectly positioned for adventures around North Devon. Enjoy a stroll along the river, followed by a tour of the North Devon Maritime Museum (a four-minute walk away). For lunch, try the seaside rite of passage – steaming hot fish and chips and an ice cream cone for dessert. If it's the beach you crave, drive ten minutes to Westward Ho! – a Blue Flag beach where the kids can try watersports while you pitch a parasol and relax on the golden sands.

The Elegant Estuary

Serene views, sleek interiors and seemingly impossible design elements come together to make an architectural feat of a home on Devon's coastline. The hosts built this home from the ground up – pulling up outside you'll immediately get the sense you're about to stay somewhere unique. And you'll get the personal touch too, as host Deborah and her family love to greet every guest on arrival. Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings. 

The Early Risers

Escape to the edge of Exmoor National Park and revel in a family-friendly stay just a stone's throw from the unspoiled moorlands, award-winning beaches and perfect peeling waves of North Devon.

This well-appointed lodge brings an inviting open layout and a touch of style to this breathtaking countryside setting, making it ideal for families looking to spend quality time together. In addition to the comfortable seating area, a wrap-around balcony ensures ample space for four, whatever the weather decides. Northshore Lodge

An exquisite apartment overlooking Saunton Sands for that spectacular panorama where you can hear the soothing waves cascading against the coast, and what's even better is that the building has its own landscaped gardens with direct access down to the beach. This opulent and minimalist apartment caters to all of your desires, from temperature-controlled wine fridges for that evening glass of wine on the balcony to ultra-soft mattresses with a bathtub in the main bedroom to conclude the evening in comfort.

The setting itself is memorable, with a plethora of nearby activities. Go with the flow of the waves and learn to surf down at Saunton Sands, you may even be able to arrange a session with the champion herself, Sarah Whiteley, and her crew at Walking on the Waves. Gallop across Croyde beach with horses from Royston Stables, or you may wish to plan a quieter pony trip for the kids. Visit Lundy Island by boat to see seals, ponies, prison caves, sea cliffs, and (from March to August) puffins. The list goes on and on, so go down to Saunton Sands and see yourself.

Sandy Views

This light-filled penthouse on the shores of Saunton Sands is a spectacular home in North Devon. Just as suited to nature lovers as those seeking creature comforts, this crisp and modern apartment makes for a wonderful base.

A direct path leads from the property to the three-mile-long Saunton Sands, one of Devon’s most beloved beaches. Here you can swim or surf – the water is slightly calmer than nearby Croyde Bay, making it ideal for beginner or intermediate surfers. If you prefer to keep your feet dry, it’s a glorious part of the world for walking and horse riding – it’s at the heart of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, after all. Braunton Burrows – a sand dune system and Biosphere reserve – is just a few minutes away from Saunton Sands. Home to a large number of rare plants and animals, it’s popular with wildlife enthusiasts. 

Back at the penthouse, take a soak in the roll-top tub then fire up the wood burner and get cosy. The views are captivating from every angle – we spent hours gazing out at the sea and sands – and sunset is an event in of itself. Curl up in a blanket on the balcony and drink in the views while tucking into a Devonshire cream tea. We’ll let you decide whether it’s the jam or cream first. 


A Penthouse on the Shore

An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group. 

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come. 

Everyone will enjoy the outdoor space, whether you’re sunbathing, cooking on the barbecue, or playing on the lawn. After an alfresco dinner, pour the Champagne and head over to the hot tub on the south-facing terrace. Enjoy the last of the summer sun as you relax and unwind – what bliss. 


Coulscott House

Far-reaching views of Ilfracombe’s sea, town, and harbour await at this elevated apartment retreat. It’s a panorama best admired from the south-facing balcony, which leads off the apartment's living room and bedroom. While the interiors aren’t anything to write home about, it’s all well-cared for and would suit a fuss-free family getaway. The private parking will be handy for bucket-and-spade days along the South West Coast. Or keep things local – Ilfracombe’s historic Tunnels Beaches, quaint harbour, and bustling independent shops and restaurants are just a short stroll away.

The Sea Perch

Just a few miles from the famous Saunton Sands, this lovely home has a bubbling hot tub, a sunny veranda and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior with light. One of three homes on the same site, it’s the ideal base for exploring the spectacular Devonshire coast. Saunton Sands is one of Devon’s most beautiful beaches, with three miles of golden sand, and azure water. It’s as popular with surfers as families, but with such a vast stretch of beach, rarely feels crowded. The popular village of Braunton is also close by, with its many surf shops, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy a lazy lie in before heading to the beach to swim, surf and explore Braunton Burrows’ immense sand dunes. Then come back for a relaxing dunk in the hot tub and watch the sun go down on the deck with a glass of something delicious. The host welcomes pets (and Saunton Sands is dog-friendly year-round), so if you’ve got a furry friend, it’s the dream holiday. 

Sandy Burrow

Situated a mere ten-minute walk from the beach in Croyde, this home is ideal for those seeking a coastal retreat – and surfers, in particular. Up to eight guests will need to share two bathrooms here, one of which is an en-suite, but aside from this, there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out and enjoy some quiet time or socialise as a group. The garden is a lovely spot for alfresco dinners while in winter, the wood burner is a welcome sight after a day on the coast. 

Surf & Sunshine

This charming home is part of a lighthouse site, having been renovated from a former lighthouse keeper’s cottage. It’s just outside of the pretty village of Mortehoe in North Devon, where you’ll find pubs and restaurants. Woolacombe and its Blue Flag sandy beach is also just a ten-minute drive away. The cottage is in an ideal spot for bird watching, and there are plenty of walks to enjoy nearby. The house itself is cosy and comfortable, with everything you might need for a short stay by the sea. 

Lighthouse Haven

Perched on the shores of Saunton Sands, this luxurious apartment is an absolute winner if seaside adventures are on your holiday to-do list. Here, days start and end on the balcony, watching the ebb and flow of the tide and breathing in the refreshing salty air. Whether you're sipping your morning coffee or sharing a bottle of wine at sundown, it'll be hard to find a better spot to recharge and relax – or better views.

Even inside, the expansive windows allow you to take in the scenery, and the breezy layout makes socialising a dream. We love the kitchen, in particular – glossy and sleek, it comes stocked with culinary gear home chefs will need, be it a wine fridge or Nespresso machine. Plus, this apartment has all the bells and whistles you could ask for – including a sleek rainfall shower, toasty underfloor heating and a lavish rolltop bath in the main suite. Add in the on-site surfboard and wetsuit storage, communal outdoor shower and private parking, and it's no wonder we're head over heels.

And the location? Pretty hard to beat. Saunton Sands beach is mere steps from your door, as is the South West Coastal Path for morning treks along the seaside. Golfers can practice their swing at Saunton Golf Club, while the pubs and shops in Braunton are just a five-minute drive away.
