We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. After a tasty barbecue lunch, ramble through Kit Hill Country Park or take the thirty-five-minute drive down to Tregantle Beach for wind-whipped walks along the unspoilt sands. Come home in the late afternoon, salty-haired and ravenous, and dig into hearty fare at the traditional pub, just a fifteen-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

If you love the thought of drifting to sleep while gazing up at the stars, this dreamy cabin could be the holiday home for you. The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. It’s impossible to leave here feeling stressed out.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.
