Swap the bucolic countryside for the seaside with a thirty-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast. In the evenings, we can’t think of anywhere better than back at home in the open-plan living room with a cocktail from the honesty bar. Throw another log on the fire, and relax.

Peak cottage appeal awaits at this thatched home set within the rolling Devon countryside. While the wonky lime-washed walls, narrow staircase, and rustic kitchen built into the former stables are impressive, it’s not overly accessible or toddler friendly. But we think it only adds to the charm. Outside, the grounds are vast, with an enclosed garden and orchard, an alfresco dining deck, and the use of a paddock. There’s also the adjoining shared barn with table tennis if the weather plays up. Sitting on the edge of the East Devon Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, the quaint town of Sidmouth is one of the county's most picturesque spots for a seaside getaway, in part down to cottages such as this one.

The recently renovated home is as cute as a button from the outside and the interior doesn't disappoint, either. The stark white walls and wooden floors are a classic combo and make for a blank canvas against which the blue furnishings and house plants can pop off. The sleek surfaces in the kitchen borrow from minimalist trends and there's a pleasing amount of space for whipping up hearty feasts.

In the local area, Sidmouth Beach takes about ten minutes to reach on foot and sits on the South West Coast Path in case you fancy a longer ramble in either direction. Elsewhere in the town, you'll find seafront cafes and restaurants, as well as a pair of museums and a theatre.

On the dramatically named Jurassic Coast, you’ll find the towns and beaches are less about dinosaurs and more about fascinating geology. However, as this home in the town of Beer is just ten miles from the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum in Lyme Regis, you could incorporate a touch of these ancient giants into your stay. Otherwise, you’ll be enjoying local beaches, antique stores, and craft galleries – and true to its name, Beer also has a selection of cosy pubs.

While we’re on the topic of the high street, it’s only fitting that your apartment is housed in a former shop. The cute exterior still has the large bay windows where stock would have once been displayed, but nowadays it’s a space for relaxation rather than retail. 

We love the way the front door opens right into the living space, making you feel welcome right away. A colourful Persian rug and a squishy leather sofa, laden with pillows, both set the tone for a comfortable break. Pour yourself a glass of pinot noir and take a seat by the windows – you’ve got fantastic views of St Michael’s Church across the road. Elegant, airy, and sophisticated, you’ll love being the shopkeeper of this apartment.

Calling all history buffs. This Grade II-listed apartment was the former headquarters of Captain Briggs, the leader of the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach. It's on the first floor – and the building itself is perched on a steep hill – so though you'll need to climb a few stairs, you'll be treated to postcard-worthy sea views. We love the cosy feel of the living space, especially the characterful window seats. And the location? It’s ideal for exploring. Lyme Regis Front Beach is a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the town's shops and eateries are nearby, too.

Bedrooms feel fit for nobility with sleigh beds and four-posters, but quite a few guests will be sharing in threes and fours at full capacity.

The fact that this timber-framed building is fuelled exclusively by renewable resources and built with ecology in mind makes staying here even sweeter. This bright and gorgeous cabin is equipped with everything you need to relax and tune into nature, starting with the covered outdoor hot tub and a bright open-plan living space that will protect you from the elements. During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

Set on the popular Marine Parade in Lyme Regis, this home is an ideal base for a small family or group of friends. You’ll need to take care with the steps and uneven ground here, and because of the desirable location, you may hear a little noise during your stay. But, we think you’ll be too busy soaking up the fresh sea air to notice. The key thing that caught our eye here is the secret passageway to the beach – so stroll down to the sea, after which, a plethora of beachfront eateries await ready to serve up an authentic coastal dinner.

If you’re looking for a home with history, this Regency villa, nestled in the heart of Sidmouth, could be for you. With two living areas and a large entertainment room, complete with books, board games, and a TV, it’s perfect for a group or two families – you can enjoy time together with the option of space to yourselves if you want it. Location-wise, you’re a stone’s throw from Sidmouth Beach – you can see the sea from the small balcony and living room – with an array of cafes, shops, and pubs nearby.

Felicity Orchard is a private affair. The huge enclosed garden offers stunning green views over the surrounding fields, as well as several hangouts where you can put your feet up and relax — from the little dining spot to the luxurious jacuzzi (this is covered, so you can enjoy the water and the fresh air whatever the weather). You'll also be sharing your space with some beautiful flowering fruit trees, so you're more than encouraged to grab an apple in the morning when the season is right. The insides are all open-plan so that you always have the best natural light, and in the evenings, you can curl up with a good book by the wood-burning stove when the weather is chilly. Nearby, you’ll find the beginning of the Grand Union Canal, which makes for a great walk. As you can see, there's always plenty to do in the area, but you can also drive to Exeter if you're in the mood for some urban exploration.

Built in the 1830s, this cottage is full of the charm you’d expect – just watch your head on those sloping ceilings and beautiful old beams on the top floor. There’s plenty of space for six guests here with the added bonus of en-suites to each bedroom. Some of the bathrooms are on the small side, but they still offer private space and everything needed to get ready for the day. Fancy some fresh sea air? Beer beach is just a short walk away.

Plus, you’ll find everything you could need within easy reach. Stroll to the beach or adventure further along the Jurassic Coast towards Sidmouth and Axminster.

In the heart of a quaint little village in Somerset, this 16th century thatched cottage seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comforts and restored interiors. Stone floors, whitewashed walls and thick oak doors house the open plan living area, complete with a high-spec kitchen with an electric Aga, a cosy sitting room where you can curl up on the armchair with a book off the shelf, and a wooden dining table with ornate chairs. The back door leads out into a picture-perfect courtyard, enclosed by stone walls. The air is scented by the lavender bush and the climbing roses, and on sunny days, gather at the outdoor table for a languid lunch. 

The cottage is a short walk from two lovely country pubs serving locally sourced food and Somerset cider. After a hearty lunch, head down one of the many public footpaths nearby, taking you through rolling green meadows and pastures. There is a village shop where you can buy provisions for dinner, or head two miles into the town of Ilminster, where you’ll find a variety of local shops and a supermarket. After a day of exploring, the sanctuary of the cosy bedrooms will call, with their serene green walls palette and wooden floors. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat.
