Sailor's Cove

More a way of life than a holiday home, this unique stay offers a wealth of outdoor activities and add-on experiences. Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

River Dipping

In the heart of pretty Salcombe, just a minute’s walk from the harbour, this breezy apartment is the perfect base from which to explore the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Part the Sea

Overlooking an arm of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary, this home not only has a stunning waterfront view in its arsenal, but the rolling countryside packs a pretty impressive punch, too. For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. Kindle a fire in the wood-burning stove and sit back with a glass of wine as you watch the world go by through the floor to ceiling windows. 

Paddler's Watch

This design-led eco home combines the best of modern living in a beautiful coastal setting. Huge floor to ceiling glass windows look out onto rolling green hills and breathtaking views of the Devonshire coastline. The open, sunshine yellow kitchen is well equipped for whipping up home cooked meals, which can be eaten al fresco on the deck on warmer days. Follow the stairs up from the deck to reach the rooftop terrace, a sun trap and the perfect place to relax with a book in summer. 

When you're ready to see even more of this corner of England, walk 150 yards to Challaborough Bay, the sandy horseshoe shaped cove, perfect for a bracing swim or some surfing lessons. The South West Coast Path is a two-minute walk away and if followed for just over an hour and a half, will take you through gorgeous coastal scenery to Wonwell Beach. The famous seaside town of Salcombe can be reached in thirty minutes by car, where you will find excellent fish restaurants, the iconic Cranch’s sweet shop, and local ice cream shops serving honeycomb ice cream, a Salcombe classic. 

When you arrive home, settle in on the cosy sofas for a movie night, or fire up the bluetooth speaker and enjoy drinks on the terrace as the sun sets over the horizon.

Devon or Las Vegas

Surrounded by 64 acres of vineyards, orchards and farmland, this luxurious barn conversion puts you between the coastal beauty of the South Devon AONB and Dartmoor National Park. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the Southwest Coast Path to discover secluded bays and white cliffs, or make the twenty-minute drive to Bantham Beach for a day on the soft sand of the classic British seaside. 

Though if you want to stay closer to home, you’ll find plenty of activities right on the estate. Gin and wine tastings are on offer and walking the grounds you’ll come face to face with white-faced Dartmoor sheep and red Devon cattle. Should the weather turn, you’ve got a private indoor swimming pool and a dedicated cinema room with plush red theatre chairs and a big screen to keep you entertained. But sunny days can be spent on the patios, dining, reclining and unwinding in front of the rolling Devonshire scenery. 

Inside, wood-burning stoves and log fires keep things feeling cosy in the open dining and living room. The gabled beams of the barn are still on show, but the sleek kitchen and furnishings are all modern. It feels like a place for family or friends to gather after long walks in the countryside, and appreciate the peace and quiet. 

Grapes & Beams

This Georgian home in South Devon’s Chillington sits on an acre of land and offers a quintessential rural retreat. Pull on the wellies provided by your host, help yourself to the apples growing in the orchard and cook up a crumble in the country-style kitchen. When it comes to tucking in, groups of more than ten will need to spread across two dining tables – perfect for adults and children looking to chat amongst themselves. The beautifully-appointed bedrooms are spread across three floors, so expect to climb some stairs here. And after an afternoon of croquet in the garden, the group can either socialise together or split off for quiet time thanks to the two welcoming sitting rooms.

River Rush

Sweet as can be, this 1834 cottage makes a cosy base for couples. It's contemporary, but still retains that rustic character – from beams in the bedroom to exposed stone walls. The woodburner sets the mood for chilly evenings, but come summertime, we reckon you'll make a beeline for the garden. Boasting panoramas of the village, church, and surrounding countryside, it's the ideal spot to enjoy an evening tipple. Even better is the bird's-eye view from the upstairs balcony. Location-wise, South Milton is just a stone's throw from sandy beaches and charming Salcombe. For a South Devon getaway, you can't go wrong.

Modern Rustic

With its sumptuous interiors and privileged position in the heart of Dartmouth, this home is a great base for exploring one of South Devon’s most enchanting towns and its surrounding countryside. Inside, a cosy seating area unfolds into a modern kitchen – we loved the glass ceiling and creamy neutral colour scheme. Head upstairs for quiet bedrooms which guarantee a peaceful night's sleep.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.

Stickleback House

Sitting above Salcombe’s High Street packed with independent boutiques and well-known brands, this bright walk-up apartment puts you in a prime position to explore the best of the town’s centre. The waterfront is also only a stone's throw away, offering access to ferries and boat hire, providing ample opportunity for the best of town and coastal adventures. Inside the home, the open-plan living area welcomes you to relax by the gas fire, while both bedrooms (one of which is en-suite) give way to views of the communal garden below – the perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine after a day of exploring.
