For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home.

Outside, meanwhile, the home ups the ante with a sunny front patio, as well as a back garden complete with a gazebo for alfresco dining, gas and charcoal barbecues and a pizza oven. It’s ideally located a short stroll from Island Street where you can nip over to its artisanal shops for morning croissants and essentials, while Salcombe Castle and the nearby beaches can easily be reached by car.

Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

This 250-year-old thatched cottage will charm you from the get-go. It's tucked down a winding lane surrounded by rolling countryside, sandwiched between Hope Cove and Salcombe. There's no doubt the location is impressive, but we reckon the home is even better. The garden is the epitome of outdoor living, with a bubbling hot tub, a summerhouse, and a panoramic terrace. You can toast marshmallows around the fire pit, or when the weather turns, head inside to the drawing room and get cosy in front of the fire. The cherry on top is the shepherd's hut, where a lucky couple can unwind in total privacy. No wonder English Home Magazine deemed it a 'must-stay' on the Devon coast.

Shepherd's Sweet

Tucked away in a peaceful but central part of Salcombe, this home had our attention the second we caught those views. With a raised position and spread over three floors, the windows are perfect for watching the town’s iconic harbour. Downstairs, the large living space combines the dining room, kitchen, and living room, meaning guests can easily break off into smaller groups while still being together. Nearby, the adventurous can try crabbing along Victoria Quay or even have a go at paddle boarding. You’ll also want to take advantage of the free parking permit, ideal for exploring even more of Devon’s stunning coastline.

The Seashells for Days

There’s no chance of forgetting where you are when you stay in The Bowline. The nautical theme runs through the entire apartment (and when you head out, the entire town of Salcombe), but with good reason. This part of south Devon has some of the most picturesque coast in the country, so it makes sense that the area emphasises that. The apartment itself is charming, with a real homely atmosphere. It’s not huge, but if you don’t try to pack it out, it’s plenty big enough, and Diana’s hosting is top-notch, which goes a very long way.

The Bowline

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

The Sea From Here

Set in the heart of bustling Salcombe, this former fisherman's cottage is a delightful place to call home. As you can expect, the interior has plenty of coastal charm, though it is a tad snug upstairs. All the contemporary comforts are accounted for, be it underfloor heating or White Company toiletries. Evenings call for cocktails in the front courtyard – there's a distillery just across the street where you can sample local gin. Also within walking distance are Salcombe's artisan shops, independent eateries, and picturesque harbour, perfect for dog walks in the sun.
