With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group.

This detached stone cottage is one of seven homes on an estate on the North Devon coast. Ideal for families, the resort boasts a two-storey Wendy House, a pirate ship climbing frame, and a soft-play area for under-fives. There’s also a games room and a heated indoor pool – there’s something for everyone. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, though the steep spiral staircase won’t be for everyone. It’s also worth pointing out that there are over fifty animals on the grounds – you won’t be up close to them unless you choose to be, but you might hear them every now and then.

It’s a six-minute drive into Combe Martin to stock up at the local supermarket or maybe pause in a local, cosy pub. Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Head upstairs, and behind the solid oak door, you'll uncover a lovely bedroom with exposed beams and soothing neutral decor. Across the hallway is a modern bathroom with a 3/4-size compact bath and an additional bedroom that's set up for children. The cottage is well located for guests to access the two-mile stretch of golden sand at Woolacombe that runs down to Putsborough, around a fifteen-minute drive away. The beach backs onto a small town with everything surfers and beach lovers could need to stock up on before taking to the surf.

Moments from the harbour, the historic Chapel of St Nicholas and Capstone Hill, this modern apartment is surrounded by beautiful sights. Set in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, the home is close to several beaches, including Tunnels Beaches – a series of sheltered bays and a Victorian tidal bathing pool found through a series of tunnels. For surfers, Croyde and Woolacombe are a short drive away, while daredevils can try their hand at activities such as coasteering. North Devon's coast is also on full display from the apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean – keep eyes peeled for wildlife such as porpoises, seals and oystercatchers and enjoy alfresco breakfasts on the balcony. With a central location in the town, the home is not far from shops if you're cooking, or there are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance if you fancy a night off. On sunny days, sit outside on the Mediterranean-style patio and sip a glass of something refreshing. From the home it's a five-minute walk to the cliff railway and the bars and shops of Lynton and Lynmouth. There are also many walking trails in the area, The South West Coast Path is very easily accessible, or you could hop in the car and head inland to explore the quant villages and moorlands of Exmoor National Park.

And you'll get the personal touch too, as host Deborah and her family love to greet every guest on arrival. Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings.

From the moment you step inside, you'll be filled with an overwhelming sense of peace and relaxation, with no one but a couple of other holiday cottages to keep you company at the end of this farm track. The soaring double-height ceilings and open layout of the living area are perfect for spending precious time with friends and family, with more than enough cosy corners to claim when you want some time to yourself. 

When it comes to on-site entertainment, there's a shared games barn – equipped with table tennis, large & small snooker tables, skittles, and croquet – which provides more than enough opportunities to indulge in a spot of friendly competition. When the sun's shining, make the most of the shared garden, complete with a couple of swings and a slide for little ones.

Exmoor Escape

This lovely family home can be found in the attractive village of Lynton, in Exmoor National Park. It’s a delightful spot on the North Devon coast, offering easy access to beaches as well as moorland and wooded hills. You’re only a six-minute drive from Blacklands Beach – make sure you bring your bucket and spade. If you want to get back to nature while still retaining ease and comfort, this is a great choice. 

The home is cosy and comfortable, with plenty of room for everyone to gather together. There’s a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen at the heart of the home, and a dining room where you can enjoy everything from hearty cooked breakfasts to set you up for a day, to fish and chips fresh from the paper after a day on the coast. You’ll also love the petite patio garden, which is filled with flowers – it’s a wonderful spot when the sun is shining. There’s even a barbecue for those lazy sunny afternoons. 

You’re within easy walking distance of Lynton’s independent shops and cafes here, as well as some characterful pubs. After a day spent hiking along river valleys or taking in the glorious views from the Valley of Rocks – which is a three-minute drive – is there anything better than claiming a cosy pub corner for an evening?

Each boutique-style bedroom has a dedicated bathroom and one has a vaulted ceiling and a Juliet balcony. 

Perfect for keen walkers, you'll have a choice of coastal paths and moorland hikes, while the famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is just a short stroll from your door. Set in Lynton's historic quarter, you'll have coffee shops and restaurants on your doorstep, along with independent shops and art galleries.

The balcony in the main bedroom has panoramic views of the sea, as does the private pebbled patio – ideal for alfresco dining as you drink in the scenery. 

 Just a five-minute walk from Lynton, you'll have plenty here to keep you busy. Hop on the nearby Cliff Railway funicular and visit its twin village of Lynmouth, where you can enjoy a local ale in one of its inns, watch boats bobbing in the harbour or indulge in a Devon cream tea. The South West Coastal Path is right on your doorstep, so remember to pack your hiking boots for long walks atop the cliffs. There are also tranquil river walks close by at Watersmeet, or you can saddle up and head inland for some pony trekking at Exmoor National Park.

For a complete change of scene, the surfing beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe are within forty minutes' drive. However, on blustery autumn days, you'll find local surfers descending on Lynmouth to escape the south-westerly winds that blow out the waves at other beaches.

Meander just a mile away from the barn and you’ll reach the charming riverside village of Rockford. Take a fifteen-minute drive to the famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway for sensational views over the rugged coastline. Or choose a different footpath each day to uncover yet another beauty spot that this area seems to have in abundance. Return to your rural retreat to cosy up under the original beams and let yourself drift away to the sounds of the crackling fire and enveloping countryside.

You'll find the cottage down a small lane with no through access, meaning complete peace and quiet for you and your loved ones. Imagine sitting outside in the terraced garden listening to river sounds or starting your day with an alfresco breakfast on the patio. Restaurants, bars, and shops are reachable along the Lyn Way, as are the famous cliff railway and pebbly Blacklands Beach. 

For sandier shores and surfing beaches, Woolacombe and Croyde are less than an hour away, or you may also hop in the car and head inland to discover Exmoor's traditional villages. With so many scenic walking routes nearby – including The South West Coast Path – you can ditch the car for most of your trip. Step outside and head towards The Valley of Rocks for some breathtaking views.

River Gorge Cottage

In the beautiful harbour village of Lynmouth is where you will find this delightful riverside cottage offering incredible views over the East Lyn river. Spend your days here strolling along the waters, and taking in the surrounding sights and countryside. Along the banks of the river, you will have easy access to the famous National Trust house and team rooms at Watersmeet. Plus, the village itself offers a picturesque harbour and a sand and pebble beach for you to explore. 

In the late afternoon, why not return home and take full advantage of the patio to enjoy a Devonshire cream tea in the fresh air as you admire the beautiful natural views? While for dinnertime, alfresco cooking, and dining can be on the menu with the home’s barbecue. 

On chilly nights, we would highly recommend settling down in front of the roaring wood-burning fireplace with your furry four-legged friend curled up at your feet, for a cosy end to the day.

One glance at those panoramic views and it's love at first sight. Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

It’s a panorama best admired from the south-facing balcony, which leads off the apartment's living room and bedroom.
