Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

There are some fantastic walks in the area – a particular favourite takes you through the woods to the local pub. Whether you're after a moment of peace or want to get the group together for an alfresco meal, the long wraparound terrace is a perfect setting to relax with a drink and admire the views and spot some wildlife. There’s also a badminton set (as sell as a games room for when the weather isn’t cooperating). For a quintessential Devon break, it doesn't get much better than this elegant Victorian farmstead. Built by Lord Hamberdon's estate in 1833, this country house commands unbroken views to Haytor Rocks some three miles away. Your hosts have lovingly restored this home over the years, being careful to maintain its original features. As a result, it's got character in spades. The kitchen strikes just the right balance between rustic charm and modern convenience, while the adjacent breakfast room makes it a lovely space for a slow start to the day, and direct garden access comes into its own on sunny mornings. Elsewhere on the ground floor, there's a dining room that's perfect for gathering together as a group and a cosy living room for that post-lunch nap by the fire. Head upstairs, and you'll find two master bedrooms, both with en-suites and stunning views south across the National Park, with a further two bedrooms on the same floor. Outside, the large walled garden enjoys Dartmoor views as far as the eye can see. There's a gorgeous covered seating area that's perfect for eating outdoors, while the bubbling hot tub is just the cherry on top. Far from any light pollution, we can't think of anything better than enjoying a post-dog walk soak as the stars emerge. There's also croquet and swing ball to keep the kids busy. If you're on the hunt for a unique holiday home with five hundred years of charm and period features, then look no further than this warm and welcoming property in the heart of the pretty town of Ashburton.

Located right on the southeastern edge of Dartmoor, there's plenty to explore right on your doorstep. The town is packed with upmarket boutiques, cool cafes and a surprisingly cosmopolitan array of restaurants. Meanwhile, families will love pony trekking and dog walking across Dartmoor, flying through the canopy and Dart River Country Park a couple of miles down the road, and visiting the jaw-dropping beaches that line the South Devon coast, including Bantham and Bigbury. 

After an action-packed day, return home to cosy up by the fire or sip sundowners in the quaint courtyard. Sit down in the formal dining room for a delicious dinner surrounded by Renaissance portraits, or enjoy a more casual affair at the kitchen table. With its wonderful white–washed facade, aged windows and brown front door with shrubs to either side, from the outside, this home is a picture–perfect haven steeped in rural charm. A backdrop of sprawling, perfectly–manicured lawns and verdant trees make the setting all the more picturesque, meanwhile the lovely little garden area serves up the ideal spot to privately soak up the sparkling Devonshire rays.

The outside of this home is enough to tug on our heartstrings, but as we meander our way from room to room, we can't help but become more enamoured with the place. Cute and cosy with a winning mixture of classic and contemporary touches, we love the fact that in spite of some of its more modern updates, the home has retained all of its classic charm. The natural wooden doors instantly add to that warm, welcoming appeal, meanwhile the addition of skylight windows invite the sunlight to stream its way inside.

Each and every nook and cranny tells its own unique story, but if you ask us, the real heart of this home is the living area. With a traditional log burner at its centre and leather sofa just waiting to be sunk into, we can already see ourselves curling up here as dusk settles with a large glass of red and some rich chocolate truffles – heaven!

Perched on a peaceful lakeside, the backing track to a stay at this lodge is one of birdsong and rustling reeds. Although you’re in the heart of the idyllic English countryside here, it’s just a fifteen-minute drive into the centre of Exeter with its huge array of restaurants, cafés and shops, and there are plenty of things to do in the woodland grounds – walking and cycling trails, golf, angling and horse-riding.

For something a bit different to the classic Devon cottage, stay in this converted seventeenth-century boathouse. The interior has been decorated in an industrial loft style, and high-end furnishings have been used throughout, from the basalt floors to the luxury bath, Bulthaup B2 kitchen and Bisazza bathroom walls. With the River Exe just across the road, it's ideally located to go for a wander along the water's edge, stopping for a pint in a cosy pub, or you can walk into the historic town of Topsham for a meal at one of its celebrated restaurants.

This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.
