Good things come to those who wait. Four hundred years ago, this cottage was a barn, but it has recently been converted to become the picturesque dwelling you'll find today. Tucked away in three acres of idyllic land, it's surrounded by wildflower meadows, rolling green hills and beautifully landscaped gardens in the heart of Devon’s glorious countryside. If you’re looking for somewhere totally private yet utterly indulgent, this is it. The interior has some grand original features (wooden beams, vaulted ceilings and a cosy wood-burner with an abundance of logs) as well as thoughtful, modern design touches (bold geometric-print cushions, sage green walls, upcycled furniture and industrial-style wall lamps). We don’t say this lightly, but a perfect night’s sleep is all but guaranteed thanks to the exceptional quality bedding (which has the same thread count as the sheets used at The Dorchester Hotel) and a cocktail or two courtesy of the honesty bar. Hic. The spectacular craggy coastline of south Devon is half an hour's drive away, while the bustling market town of Honiton takes about half that time to reach.

Say hello to peace, privacy and picturesque views at this stunning 17th-century cottage squirrelled away in the east Devon countryside. A former barn that has been lovingly transformed into a stylish yet homely retreat, the traditional features – think a flickering wood burner, exposed beams and a vaulted ceiling that makes for a striking focal point – mixed up with trendy and modern flourishes. We loved the eclectic artwork on the walls, the bold navy paintwork in the master bedroom and the cool upcycled furniture. Take a moment to admire your surroundings and you’ll be mightily impressed. The rolling Blackdown Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty no less – landscaped gardens and wildflower meadows make up the three acres of private land on the estate. Swap the bucolic countryside for the seaside with a thirty-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast. In the evenings, we can’t think of anywhere better than back at home in the open-plan living room with a cocktail from the honesty bar. Throw another log on the fire, and relax.

This traditional barn – located in the delightful village of Combe Raleigh – has been lovingly converted to retain many of its original features, including dark wooden beams, flooring, and exposed white-washed stone walls. Each of the two bedrooms offers excellent views over the private Italianate courtyard and top lake that makes up part of the sprawling thirty-two-acre shared grounds, providing the ideal vistas to wake up to each morning. 

Enjoy breakfast in the traditional country kitchen before you head out for the day. Wander the acres of lawns, woods, and pasture, as you take a leisurely stroll around the lake with your furry four-legged friend, or venture to the nearby Honiton – a historic town packed with antique shops, and great bridleways for scenic walks. What’s more, Exeter – with its well-known racecourse and cultural centre featuring a beautiful cathedral – isn’t far away either. 

For dinnertime, return home, fire up the barbecue, and dine alfresco in the Italianate courtyard, which is accompanied by lake views. When the evening grows chilly, head back inside via the large wooden entry doors. Then, slip into the soothing waters with the Victorian slipper bath, or curl up on the sofa, cosy and warm in front of the electric wood-burning stove.

Look closely, and you'll spot ample inklings of this home's storied past, from the beam-clad ceilings to the Juliet balcony, where flour bags were once hauled from the loft below. On the first floor, the open-plan living area is blessed by heaps of natural light, offering a free-flowing canvas of calm with lofty vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and partially exposed stone walls. Plush sofas huddle around the wood-burning fireplace – a lovely space for chilly evenings – while the fully-equipped kitchen and diner offer direct access to the garden. With the River Exe just across the road, it's ideally located to go for a wander along the water's edge, stopping for a pint in a cosy pub, or you can walk into the historic town of Topsham for a meal at one of its celebrated restaurants.

Set in a row of Georgian houses on Sidmouth’s endless esplanade, there’s no better place to soak up the seaside than from this pretty apartment. Enormous sash windows reveal a balcony, ideally set up with a dining table for elevenses in the golden sunshine. Pour a glass of your favourite tipple to the sound of waves lapping the shore and caws of seagulls swooping overhead. Later on, when you’re ready for your lunch, fire up the barbecue on the terrace and prepare the catch of the day in the impressive kitchen. You’ll notice the interiors are tastefully decorated, with classic furnishings and quality linens to ensure unbridled comfort. After relaxing with a cup of tea on the plump sofas, put on your sun hat and mosey down to Sidmouth Town Beach. Roll up your trousers, pick your way across the pebbles and paddle in the brisk waters. If you’d like to expend a little more energy, embark on an eight-mile clifftop walk along the Jurassic Coast to the pretty village of Beer – country pubs with real ale and slap-up grub await.

During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

We love the characterful features here, like the hand-crafted sliding bedroom door and the oak breakfast bar. While the kitchenette is small, it’s got everything you need to whip up a light bite or snack, and for heartier meals, you’ll find a variety of cafes, pubs, and restaurants nearby. Location-wise, you’ve got the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Tiverton with its canals and castle, within easy driving distance.

The huge enclosed garden offers stunning green views over the surrounding fields, as well as several hangouts where you can put your feet up and relax — from the little dining spot to the luxurious jacuzzi (this is covered, so you can enjoy the water and the fresh air whatever the weather). You'll also be sharing your space with some beautiful flowering fruit trees, so you're more than encouraged to grab an apple in the morning when the season is right. The insides are all open-plan so that you always have the best natural light, and in the evenings, you can curl up with a good book by the wood-burning stove when the weather is chilly. Nearby, you’ll find the beginning of the Grand Union Canal, which makes for a great walk. As you can see, there's always plenty to do in the area, but you can also drive to Exeter if you're in the mood for some urban exploration.

Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.

And, if you take a ten-minute drive to the south of the island, you can visit the historic Portland Bill Lighthouse and admire the curious Pulpit Rock too.

Surrounded by 64 acres of vineyards, orchards and farmland, this luxurious barn conversion puts you between the coastal beauty of the South Devon AONB and Dartmoor National Park.
