Sitting on the edge of the East Devon Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, the quaint town of Sidmouth is one of the county's most picturesque spots for a seaside getaway, in part down to cottages such as this one.

The recently renovated home is as cute as a button from the outside and the interior doesn't disappoint, either. Otherwise, you’ll be enjoying local beaches, antique stores, and craft galleries – and true to its name, Beer also has a selection of cosy pubs.

While we’re on the topic of the high street, it’s only fitting that your apartment is housed in a former shop. The cute exterior still has the large bay windows where stock would have once been displayed, but nowadays it’s a space for relaxation rather than retail. 

We love the way the front door opens right into the living space, making you feel welcome right away. A colourful Persian rug and a squishy leather sofa, laden with pillows, both set the tone for a comfortable break. Pour yourself a glass of pinot noir and take a seat by the windows – you’ve got fantastic views of St Michael’s Church across the road. Tucked away in three acres of idyllic land, it's surrounded by wildflower meadows, rolling green hills and beautifully landscaped gardens in the heart of Devon’s glorious countryside. If you’re looking for somewhere totally private yet utterly indulgent, this is it. The interior has some grand original features (wooden beams, vaulted ceilings and a cosy wood-burner with an abundance of logs) as well as thoughtful, modern design touches (bold geometric-print cushions, sage green walls, upcycled furniture and industrial-style wall lamps). We don’t say this lightly, but a perfect night’s sleep is all but guaranteed thanks to the exceptional quality bedding (which has the same thread count as the sheets used at The Dorchester Hotel) and a cocktail or two courtesy of the honesty bar. Hic. The spectacular craggy coastline of south Devon is half an hour's drive away, while the bustling market town of Honiton takes about half that time to reach.

Say hello to peace, privacy and picturesque views at this stunning 17th-century cottage squirrelled away in the east Devon countryside. A former barn that has been lovingly transformed into a stylish yet homely retreat, the traditional features – think a flickering wood burner, exposed beams and a vaulted ceiling that makes for a striking focal point – mixed up with trendy and modern flourishes. We loved the eclectic artwork on the walls, the bold navy paintwork in the master bedroom and the cool upcycled furniture. Take a moment to admire your surroundings and you’ll be mightily impressed. The rolling Blackdown Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty no less – landscaped gardens and wildflower meadows make up the three acres of private land on the estate. Swap the bucolic countryside for the seaside with a thirty-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast. In the evenings, we can’t think of anywhere better than back at home in the open-plan living room with a cocktail from the honesty bar. Throw another log on the fire, and relax.

Perched on the seafront in Lyme Regis, this second-floor apartment offers postcard-worthy panoramas that won't disappoint. Sit back, relax, and watch the tide roll in from the leather armchairs – thanks to the large windows, the scenery is always front and centre. Even better is the small balcony, the perfect spot for a glass of wine as the sun goes down. The apartment is a great size for two, though a third guest could be accommodated on a sofa bed with prior notice. And the location? You can't beat it. A steep passageway leads directly to the beach, putting the saltwater and single shore right on your doorstep.

Calling all history buffs. This Grade II-listed apartment was the former headquarters of Captain Briggs, the leader of the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach. It's on the first floor – and the building itself is perched on a steep hill – so though you'll need to climb a few stairs, you'll be treated to postcard-worthy sea views. We love the cosy feel of the living space, especially the characterful window seats. And the location? It’s ideal for exploring. Lyme Regis Front Beach is a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the town's shops and eateries are nearby, too.

Well, the sea and beach views from this apartment’s private balcony are stunning. You can enjoy the vistas from this home’s large windows in the living room, too. The bedroom is compact, and there’s not much storage here, but there is a wardrobe in the utility. Also, the kitchen is on the small side – that said, it has everything you need and there’s an array of eateries a short stroll away. And, of course, the beach is footsteps away. This place is the perfect base for exploring all that Dorset has to offer.

Overlooking the Marine Parade, this apartment is a great option if you’re looking to experience the vibrant heart of Lyme Regis. It’s worth noting it’s possible to hear street noise from the neighbouring bar, but you will have incredible sea views from the cosy living room. A car parking permit can be supplied on request. Plus, you’ll find everything you could need within easy reach. Stroll to the beach or adventure further along the Jurassic Coast towards Sidmouth and Axminster.

The cottages are set within three acres of private land made up of rolling green hills, flower-filled meadows and tree-studded, landscaped gardens. It's utterly idyllic and you’ll struggle to tear yourself away – but if you can muster up the energy, the bustling market town of Honiton is around six miles away, and Branscombe Beach is a thirty-minute drive from home.

Set on the popular Marine Parade in Lyme Regis, this home is an ideal base for a small family or group of friends. You’ll need to take care with the steps and uneven ground here, and because of the desirable location, you may hear a little noise during your stay. But, we think you’ll be too busy soaking up the fresh sea air to notice. The key thing that caught our eye here is the secret passageway to the beach – so stroll down to the sea, after which, a plethora of beachfront eateries await ready to serve up an authentic coastal dinner.

One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space.
