Among the manicured garden, you'll find a saltwater swimming pool that's heated by solar panels, a tennis court surrounded by Rhodendrum bushes and corners with orchards and vegetable patches — not to mention a Grade II-listed grotto. If rain cancels play at any point, you can always head into the barn that's been converted into a dance-studio-come-yoga-space. In here, there's also a well-equipped gym, an infra-red sauna and a games room to keep you busy.

That's before we've even got to the home itself. It's hard not to be instantly wowed by the grand dining room, double-aspect living rooms and hallway complete with a baby grand piano. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Bursting with character, this cute-as-a-button barn conversion found on a forty-acre Cornish farm offers a real escape from the stresses of modern life. You'll have all the charming rustic touches you would hope for — exposed stone walls, a vaulted ceiling and a log burner — but there's a modern feel, and absolutely no chintz. You can slip into your own wood-fired hot tub just outside the back door, and the host has been thoughtful enough to provide a generous stack of logs to get you started. Meet the farm animals or set off alongside the private Nature Reserve to discover the private shingle beach on the River Tamar. Later, take advantage of some of the farm's other surprises — a communal games room with ping-pong, a shared tennis court, a hammock hidden away in the orchard, and a basketball hoop. With a number of extra activities also bookable, you can take part in a foraging workshop, try out stand-up paddleboarding or get involved in local wine tasting. Alternatively, you can drive to the port city of Plymouth in about forty minutes and visit the National Marine Aquarium.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. Whoever gets to sleep in the Captain's Cabin bedroom gets a gorgeous view of the surrounding harbour right from the comfort of their own bed – imagine waking up next to that blissful sight every morning.

There's a fantastic selection of eateries by the harbour front as well as a cosy pub that serves delicious local produce. If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

This lovingly hand-crafted shepherd’s hut is meticulously designed throughout to offer every creature comfort you could imagine. Surprisingly spacious, expect pristine, restful interiors – all wrapped up in a whimsical feature wallpaper adding just the right touch of rural romance. Kickstart your day in the sleek, modern shower room, then curl up on the sofa to enjoy toast and freshly-brewed coffee – best served with those double doors wide open to take in the uninterrupted countryside vistas outside. As night falls, cosy up beside the firepit (which handily doubles as your barbeque for alfresco meals) for an evening of stargazing and marshmallow roasting – on a clear evening, you might even catch a shooting star. In chiller months, take things inside and pull up a pew at the granite-clad bar area as you rustle up a meal in the made-for-action kitchen. The wine fridge will keep your tipple perfectly chilled, while the underfloor heating will keep your toes toasty. Cosy up in front of the TV and while away an evening with a relaxing movie night. Should you ever wish to leave this charming nook for two, you’ll find the historic town of Tavistock is just a five-minute drive away, where you’ll find bustling shops, restaurants, and an award-winning gastro-pub complete with a sunny beer garden. Or up the ante and take off into the beautiful wilds of Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley (both less than half an hour's drive away) – you’re perfectly placed equidistance from them both.

This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

Sitting in the middle of a thirty-acre farm in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this barn conversion is a fittingly impressive home for such an idyllic location. 

There are plenty of spots from which you can gaze out at the pretty meadows, woodland and the banks of the River Tamar that surround the address, whether that's out through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the main living space or while seated on the roof terrace bordered by a leafy pergola. However, the home's interior is well worth your attention, too. Certain features have been retained from the building's industrious past, including wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonework, but otherwise, the design is bright and contemporary.

The number of amenities available to guests distinguishes this home from the pack. Not only is there a homely wood-burning stove in the main space, but there's a games room with a ping-pong table and darts board in a section that was once a cattle shed, plus lots of equipment for outdoor games beside the forecourt and lawned area. Here you will find tables, benches and additional seating for your exclusive use and space to stoke up barbecues and challenge the group to a variety of games.

Elsewhere on the site, there are the ruins of a silver and lead mine accompanied by the pumping engine house and smithy, part of the industrial landscape recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are other footpaths that lead off into the countryside, but you can also stroll down to the banks of the River Tamar, on which there's a two-hour window every day when it's safe to use it for water sports.

Nestled in thirty-eight acres of private woodland and parkland, you'll find this Grade II-listed estate, It's well-known in the area for its beauty and tranquility, making this home a great option for those who want their holiday residence to be quiet and peaceful. 

Part of a manor house, this wing has been brilliantly taken care of since Elizabethan times and has recently been refurbished. Along with some original features that emphasise the rural charm, you'll notice plenty of wood, mood lighting, and high-quality soft furnishings where you can lounge and relax. Every room has a view of the scenic surroundings that are yours to explore – the host has told us that you might see a red deer or a rare bird on your morning walks around the pond. 

It would be easy to while away an eternity in this unique corner of Devon, but there's plenty to see and do in the wider area too. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to Exmoor National Park, where you can go hiking, mountain biking, or even try your hand at rock climbing and canoeing. And, if you're craving a day at the beach, then the north Devon coastline is close by – you can arrive at the surfer town of Westward Ho! in under an hour by car. 

Little Dart Retreat

Set above Grunta Beach and positioned in the hilly dune-like valley behind Morte Point, this coastal abode makes the most of its location. Here, sea vistas are framed by large windows, whilst a large outdoor terrace provides an impressive viewpoint – this home prioritises your coastal vantage point for a memorable getaway.

Inside, the large open living space is homey and modern, creating a comforting place for you to unwind after a day walking the South West Coastal Path. Sink into the plump sofas with your holiday read in front of the crackling fire, gather around the family-style dining table to enjoy home-cooked dinners, and settle on the terrace with a glass of locally-produced wine and watch the tide roll in.

Speaking of the tide, spend a day on the sands of Grunta Beach, or visit Woolacombe, where you can try your hand at surfing and paddleboarding. There are endless hiking trails in the area too, so pull on your walking boots and set about this AONB’s abundant surroundings.

After a day spent on the beach, you can take a soak in the bathtub before settling down for an evening in the garden. Perhaps you’ll tuck into fish and chips while watching the windsurfers dance in front of the sunset.

Step into this achingly romantic wooden hut in St Kew, Cornwall, for a whirlwind getaway unlike any other. Decorated in an eclectic, bohemian style, you’ll want to fire up the stove and sink right into a pile of embroidered cushions with a mug of hot chocolate. You’ll also have your own private deck on which to drink tea with scones or enjoy hot Cornish pasties from the local bakery.
