In our opinion, this home is a beautiful landmark of the Devon coastline, away from the busy tourist-heavy beaches – it's the idyllic summer getaway.

We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

This modern apartment is part of a local landmark – an old industrial building that's been used as everything from a pottery to a brewery. Now split into a handful of stylish apartments, it's a striking building close to the river and just a short way from the centre of Dartmouth.

Each bedroom is cosy and characterful, with nautical artwork and light wooden furniture. 

There are plenty of activities for all ages on your doorstep. For a Devonshire classic, head to the banks of the river for a spot of crabbing, and then grab fish and chips from the award-winning local chippy a nine-minute walk from the house. When the sun shines, Devon’s beaches could be Mediterranean. The wide expanses of Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes by car, where you can enjoy a day of splashing in the sea and building sandcastles. There are many boat and ferry trips up the River Dart – your hosts are happy to recommend you some excellent day trips as well as tips on the best walks and other excursions. Dartmouth is a twelve-minute walk away, where you’ll find top seafood restaurants and laid-back country pubs.

A fifteen-minute stroll from Dartmouth Harbour, this hilltop home boasts fabulous panoramas across the town. The balcony is the best spot to take it all in, along with a G&T made with local gin. Inside, the groovy design takes inspiration from the 1970s. Each room is decorated with colourful wallpaper, retro accents, and mid-century furniture. Three bedrooms are on the ground floor, and one has a double bunk best suited to children. You'll find the open-plan living space on the first floor, taking advantage of the views. Factor in the two private parking spaces, and it's an excellent choice for a Devon getaway.

Groovy Gulls

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

Sitting on the opposite side of the River Dart from the town of Dartmouth, the village of Kingswear offers some sweeping views of the local area and the vantage points to be found at this home are up there with the best of them.

During bursts of warm weather, you're sure to spend hours upon hours out on the glass-walled terrace complete with an alfresco dining table. However, if the forecast isn't so forgiving, the panorama can still be admired through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the walls, or even through the home's telescope if you want a close-up.

There's more to this home than what lies outside, however. The mass of glass brings in a wealth of natural light to the interior and this is accentuated by the reflective wooden floor and cream walls. The wood burner adds a strong dose of cosiness to the living room, while the kitchen has a wealth of space for whipping up family-sized feasts.

When you're looking for options for days out, you're spoilt for choice here. Kingswear Castle takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot and you can continue along the South West Coast Path to Brownstone Battery in another twenty-five minutes. And after spending so long looking at Dartmouth from your home, you'll probably want to see what all the fuss is about at some point – time it right and the journey by foot and ferry will take you less than a quarter of an hour.

Every morning you get to wake up to the sound of the Start Way lake and the sea, with a gorgeous view of the glistening lake from one of the bedrooms. Stepping outside in the morning, you breathe in the ocean breeze while making your way to The Billy Can Cafe for a toasty cup of coffee. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden gems that Devon has to offer – our favourite is the Stokeley farm shop that stocks products made by local artisans. With the dog–friendly beach practically on your doorstep, why not tuck into a steaming portion of traditional fish and chips while sitting on the sand? 

As the sun sets and the tide goes in, head back home to snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Pop your favourite film on, or pick up your latest read, and while away the rest of the day in total bliss.

The roomy kitchen and cosy lounge are ideal for spending quality time together – we suggest lighting the fire on cooler nights. While there’s no parking directly outside, your host provides a permit to park in town. That said, you'll do most exploring on foot, as you're only a short stroll from Dartmouth’s harbour, coffee shops and seafood eateries. There's also no shortage of activities to enjoy, from relaxing coastal walks to beach days and boat trips.

This seventeeth–century property overlooks the sparkling blue waters of the seaside town, Brixham. Situated next to the charming harbour, you're only a short stroll away from the waterside. Head up the three-tiered garden to admire the view from atop. You'll be greeted with clear skies, the hum of the waters, and the sounds of the harbour. 

The large windows throughout the home light up the space as you play on the vintage arcade table that offers the classical Space Invaders and Pacman. There's so much to love about this home, but some of our favourite features are the cinema room, the floor-to-ceiling views from the dining table and the choice of terraces outside where you can eat your meals together. By day you can explore the coastal paths and villages, or drive to Salcombe or Dartmouth in less than half an hour. Though the building’s exterior looks Tudor in style, you’ll have nothing but modern comforts once inside. 
Make yourself comfortable on the living room’s sofa or wingback chair and watch the sunlight pour in through the large windows creating a kaleidoscope of dazzling colours. We love the kitchen’s sociable breakfast bar – ideal for starting the day over fresh coffee and locally bought pastries – and the dining table that invites intimate soirées after a day of exploring. Dartmouth Castle is also easily reachable in twenty minutes on foot, Blackpool Sands is a ten-minute drive and Dartmoor National Park is just over thirty minutes away by car.

Set less than a ten-minute walk from the pubs, cafes and restaurants of Dartmouth, this home is ideal for any group on a trip to South Devon. Garage parking is available on the premises – a rarity in this area – and should you want to escape to the beach, Blackpool Sands is a ten-minute drive away. The outside space steals the show here – there's a patio overlooking the town and a large garden with a picnic table. Inside, the well-appointed kitchen and comfortable bedrooms guarantee a stress-free break. It's a little dated (although we think it's cosy), but the fantastic location more than makes up for the interiors.

First of all, there’s a private terrace, furnished with table and chairs, right on the promenade. Glass sliding doors lead from here to the living room, so you can still hear the sea from the comfort of the sofa. Beachglass-blue bowls and turquoise cushions pop against the otherwise white and cream backdrop inside. The kitchen is tucked away separately, with everything you need to cook a family meal.

On the promenade, it’s no surprise that you’re mere footsteps from the beach and there’s a charming local pub just two doors down. The South West Coastal Path runs right outside the door of this home and, if you want to explore the area by car, you’ll find Dartmouth a twenty-five-minute drive away and Salcombe half an hour away.
