Tucked away in a prime position just a stone’s throw away from Dartmouth’s waterfront, this contemporary home is ideal for a coastal break. We love the upside-down nature, and the open-plan first-floor living area is a sight to behold, with its high ceilings and beautiful beams. And while this home’s charming style may make you reluctant to leave home, Dartmouth has so much to offer. Pay a visit to the castle, or head a little further to Sugary Cove beach – there’s something for all tastes here.

We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

This modern apartment is part of a local landmark – an old industrial building that's been used as everything from a pottery to a brewery. Now split into a handful of stylish apartments, it's a striking building close to the river and just a short way from the centre of Dartmouth.

Character features mix with clean, contemporary styling here, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams sitting alongside black-framed windows and marble bathrooms. There's a comfortable open-plan layout to the living space with a sleek galley kitchen just off it and cosy leather sofas to curl up on, along with two big bedrooms – each with its own bathroom. And the fact that one bedroom is set on a lower floor makes it plenty private enough for friends sharing.

Just a couple of minutes from the town by car, or a stroll on foot, this home is also close to Gallants Bower and Dartmouth Castle.

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.

Cruise the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer, go paddleboarding, rent a boat, or just utilize your direct access to the water. On land: picnic, visit nearby castles, museums, the Greenway House (once home to Agatha Christie), or catch the ferry to the historic maritime town of Dartmouth, which is within walking distance. The front door leads out onto a sun-soaked deck, complete with a wooden table and a barbecue – the perfect place for long alfresco lunches and sunset drinks with panoramic vistas of the river. Each bedroom is cosy and characterful, with nautical artwork and light wooden furniture. 

There are plenty of activities for all ages on your doorstep. For a Devonshire classic, head to the banks of the river for a spot of crabbing, and then grab fish and chips from the award-winning local chippy a nine-minute walk from the house. When the sun shines, Devon’s beaches could be Mediterranean. The wide expanses of Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes by car, where you can enjoy a day of splashing in the sea and building sandcastles. There are many boat and ferry trips up the River Dart – your hosts are happy to recommend you some excellent day trips as well as tips on the best walks and other excursions. Dartmouth is a twelve-minute walk away, where you’ll find top seafood restaurants and laid-back country pubs.

With its sumptuous interiors and privileged position in the heart of Dartmouth, this home is a great base for exploring one of South Devon’s most enchanting towns and its surrounding countryside. Inside, a cosy seating area unfolds into a modern kitchen – we loved the glass ceiling and creamy neutral colour scheme. Head upstairs for quiet bedrooms which guarantee a peaceful night's sleep.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.

Upstairs, the living room invites you to kick back on its sofa or armchairs with a glass of wine while enjoying the fresh breeze coming off of Waterhead Creek through the open glass doors. In the evenings, there’s an electric fireplace here too for added ambience, while the dining room invites celebratory feasts aplenty while gazing out over the ships sailing in and out of Dartmouth Harbour.

The interiors are elegant and luxurious, with rooms spread across four floors and encompassing a self-contained studio apartment. With all eyes on the rolling hills and the seascape to the rear, the design features several balconies and terraces – all offering places to sit and take it all in. There's so much to love about this home, but some of our favourite features are the cinema room, the floor-to-ceiling views from the dining table and the choice of terraces outside where you can eat your meals together. By day you can explore the coastal paths and villages, or drive to Salcombe or Dartmouth in less than half an hour. If you're bringing your bucket and spade, you'll be pleased to know the beach at Slapton Sands is just a five-minute drive away.

Set less than a ten-minute walk from the pubs, cafes and restaurants of Dartmouth, this home is ideal for any group on a trip to South Devon. Garage parking is available on the premises – a rarity in this area – and should you want to escape to the beach, Blackpool Sands is a ten-minute drive away. The outside space steals the show here – there's a patio overlooking the town and a large garden with a picnic table. Inside, the well-appointed kitchen and comfortable bedrooms guarantee a stress-free break. It's a little dated (although we think it's cosy), but the fantastic location more than makes up for the interiors.

Every morning you get to wake up to the sound of the Start Way lake and the sea, with a gorgeous view of the glistening lake from one of the bedrooms. Homely and vibrant, the open–plan living area gives you the chance to pop the TV on while you cook breakfast. 

Stepping outside in the morning, you breathe in the ocean breeze while making your way to The Billy Can Cafe for a toasty cup of coffee. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden gems that Devon has to offer – our favourite is the Stokeley farm shop that stocks products made by local artisans. With the dog–friendly beach practically on your doorstep, why not tuck into a steaming portion of traditional fish and chips while sitting on the sand? 

As the sun sets and the tide goes in, head back home to snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Pop your favourite film on, or pick up your latest read, and while away the rest of the day in total bliss.

Sitting on the opposite side of the River Dart from the town of Dartmouth, the village of Kingswear offers some sweeping views of the local area and the vantage points to be found at this home are up there with the best of them.

During bursts of warm weather, you're sure to spend hours upon hours out on the glass-walled terrace complete with an alfresco dining table. However, if the forecast isn't so forgiving, the panorama can still be admired through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the walls, or even through the home's telescope if you want a close-up.

There's more to this home than what lies outside, however. The mass of glass brings in a wealth of natural light to the interior and this is accentuated by the reflective wooden floor and cream walls. The wood burner adds a strong dose of cosiness to the living room, while the kitchen has a wealth of space for whipping up family-sized feasts.

When you're looking for options for days out, you're spoilt for choice here. Kingswear Castle takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot and you can continue along the South West Coast Path to Brownstone Battery in another twenty-five minutes.
