There's a dash of retro here, with a 1950s inspired long table, and bright and bold colours in the bedrooms. In our opinion, this home is a beautiful landmark of the Devon coastline, away from the busy tourist-heavy beaches – it's the idyllic summer getaway.

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.

This charming little cottage used to be owned by a coastguard and is like a home away from home – but with a better view. Every morning you get to wake up to the sound of the Start Way lake and the sea, with a gorgeous view of the glistening lake from one of the bedrooms. Homely and vibrant, the open–plan living area gives you the chance to pop the TV on while you cook breakfast. 

Stepping outside in the morning, you breathe in the ocean breeze while making your way to The Billy Can Cafe for a toasty cup of coffee. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden gems that Devon has to offer – our favourite is the Stokeley farm shop that stocks products made by local artisans. With the dog–friendly beach practically on your doorstep, why not tuck into a steaming portion of traditional fish and chips while sitting on the sand? 

As the sun sets and the tide goes in, head back home to snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Pop your favourite film on, or pick up your latest read, and while away the rest of the day in total bliss.

For a wholesome getaway in sunny Devon, this cottage is just the ticket. In the heart of Slapton Ley, you have the coast on one side of the house, and a lake on the other. It's a nature lover's paradise. Enjoy taking your dog for a morning walk along the coastal path, less than a thirty-second walk away. Mornings spent here are peaceful and serene and by lunchtime, families will gather along the golden sands for a beautiful day by the sea. Take leisurely afternoon swims in the sea, before making the short walk home for a glass of wine in your garden. We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

This modern apartment is part of a local landmark – an old industrial building that's been used as everything from a pottery to a brewery. Now split into a handful of stylish apartments, it's a striking building close to the river and just a short way from the centre of Dartmouth.

Character features mix with clean, contemporary styling here, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams sitting alongside black-framed windows and marble bathrooms. There's a comfortable open-plan layout to the living space with a sleek galley kitchen just off it and cosy leather sofas to curl up on, along with two big bedrooms – each with its own bathroom. And the fact that one bedroom is set on a lower floor makes it plenty private enough for friends sharing.

Just a couple of minutes from the town by car, or a stroll on foot, this home is also close to Gallants Bower and Dartmouth Castle.

Positioned overlooking Start Bay on the south coast of Devon, this home has been thoughtfully put together, making the most of its incredible views. Architect designed using a combination of steel, glass and stone, there's more than a hint of a Mediterranean feel to the place. With all eyes on the rolling hills and the seascape to the rear, the design features several balconies and terraces – all offering places to sit and take it all in. Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Characterful and bright, this home is situated along three miles of the shingled beaches in Torcross. Originally constructed in the 1800s to house horse-drawn carriages, it's been renovated to retain the original charm and features, such as the exposed roof timbers in the living area. We love how welcoming the space feels, with sofas you want to sink into and a smart kitchen for rustling up Devon-inspired cuisine of your own. Share breakfast around the dining table before heading out for a day in the sun – this home is just metres from the beach. Stretch out on the shores of Slapton Sands while kids splash in the calm waters. When you're feeling peckish, pop home for lunch or grab a bite at one of the quaint eateries and pubs along the shore. Dartmouth and Kingsbridge aren't far – both a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to pick up the pace and explore more of the South Devon Coast, but there's a quiet charm to the sleepy village of Torcross that we adore. It's perfect for families wanting a more laid-back, seaside getaway.

Sleepy Town

With spectacular River Dart views, this charming family home is just the place for those after a coastal escape to South Devon. Wake up to breakfast on the sun-soaked deck with sweeping views across the harbour, over the River Dart and out to Dartmouth. The Atlantic beckons beyond, and with easy access to the secluded coves, expansive sand and shingle beaches flanked by striking cliffs, it’ll be effortless to make the most of your location.

When you’re not out exploring the seafront shops and teahouses in Dartmouth (a quick ferry ride away), or walking the cliff-grazing trails along the South West Coastal Path, spend sunny afternoons in one of the elegant waterfront pubs, watching the boats float up and down the river. Enjoy long balmy evenings with a barbecued seafood feast on the patio, with today’s catch you picked up from the local fishmonger, and soak up the last of the lingering light. As dusk descends, the cosy lounge, with its plush sofas and crackling fire, will be everyone’s first port of call for movie nights come nightfall. 

The River House

You can hear the rush of ocean waves and taste the salt in the air at this charming seaside home in Torcross. First of all, there’s a private terrace, furnished with table and chairs, right on the promenade. Glass sliding doors lead from here to the living room, so you can still hear the sea from the comfort of the sofa. Beachglass-blue bowls and turquoise cushions pop against the otherwise white and cream backdrop inside. The kitchen is tucked away separately, with everything you need to cook a family meal.

On the promenade, it’s no surprise that you’re mere footsteps from the beach and there’s a charming local pub just two doors down. The South West Coastal Path runs right outside the door of this home and, if you want to explore the area by car, you’ll find Dartmouth a twenty-five-minute drive away and Salcombe half an hour away.

This cosy cottage in Dittisham is the perfect place to kick back, relax and enjoy the incredible views of the River Dart. If you're anything like us, you'll want to spend every spare moment in the courtyard garden, watching the boats float by. Summer mornings call for coffee and alfresco breakfasts, while evenings are the perfect excuse to pour yourself a glass of wine and admire the South Devon sunsets.

Inside, you can't help but swoon over the comfortable and chic spaces. Unwind with a good book in the window seat, or throw a log on the wood-burner and snuggle up on the leather sofa for a Netflix movie night. For dinner, rustle up something tasty in the kitchen – this area is home to some of the country's best seafood – or head down to the local pub, just one minute away, when you don't fancy cooking.

Speaking of location, you've got the Dart Valley at your fingertips. You're just a stone's throw from the quayside, where you can hop on a ferry to Dartmouth and Greenway. Craving sand and sun? Drive twenty minutes to Blackpool Sands and while away the afternoon by the sea.

We were sold on the views of the River Dart alone, and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the inside of this architectural stunner. Each light-filled bedroom is perfectly appointed to take in those showstopping panoramas, and you'll love the free-flowing living space, with bi-folds leading out onto a south-facing garden. Location-wise, you're just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge, with smart boutiques, galleries, and bistros along the way.

Nestled in the lush South Devon countryside, this stunning converted barn is an idyllic place to unwind while being conveniently located near beaches and pretty market towns. This characterful home offers a luxurious stay with attractive and quirky features like the mezzanine above the lounge perfect for kids, vaulted ceilings in the kitchen and a vintage roll-top bath in one of the bedrooms.

Carve out some time to go for a hike along the South West Coast Path or take a ten-minute drive to Kingsbridge and have a rummage in the eclectic antique stores. There's also an award-winning pub in Chillington within walking distance – ideal for those nights when you don't fancy cooking.

Coleridge Barn

Lady Fair

This Georgian home is full of personal touches. Inside, you'll find two cosy lounges, a log burner, and traditional window seats ideal for curling up with a book. The wi-fi isn't the fastest, and the Jack-and-Jill bathrooms mean you'll have to share. But it's the garden that's the real stunner. Set across an acre of land, there's plenty of green space for pups and little ones. The table has alfresco meals written all over it, while the outdoor sofa is perfect for unwinding with a G&T. Croquet, an apple orchard, and even a selection of wellies are all available, too. Set in the south Devon countryside, you'll only be a short drive from pretty beaches and the seaside.

Whispers of Charm

Sitting on the opposite side of the River Dart from the town of Dartmouth, the village of Kingswear offers some sweeping views of the local area and the vantage points to be found at this home are up there with the best of them.

During bursts of warm weather, you're sure to spend hours upon hours out on the glass-walled terrace complete with an alfresco dining table. However, if the forecast isn't so forgiving, the panorama can still be admired through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the walls, or even through the home's telescope if you want a close-up.

There's more to this home than what lies outside, however. The mass of glass brings in a wealth of natural light to the interior and this is accentuated by the reflective wooden floor and cream walls. The wood burner adds a strong dose of cosiness to the living room, while the kitchen has a wealth of space for whipping up family-sized feasts.

When you're looking for options for days out, you're spoilt for choice here. Kingswear Castle takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot and you can continue along the South West Coast Path to Brownstone Battery in another twenty-five minutes. And after spending so long looking at Dartmouth from your home, you'll probably want to see what all the fuss is about at some point – time it right and the journey by foot and ferry will take you less than a quarter of an hour.
