Nestled in a typical Devon valley with house martins nesting under the eaves, cattle grazing in the distance and minimal phone reception, you could be forgiven for thinking you've stepped back in time. From the moment you walk in the door, you'll immediately feel the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away. The home has been sympathetically converted to retain its evident charm, with the addition of luxurious modern comforts (including wi-fi – so you won't be completely disconnected from the world). The spacious kitchen is equipped with an AGA for the ultimate in countryside chic, though there's also an induction hob as a backup, plus antique chairs and a beautiful walnut dining table. Through to the new section of the house and you're treated to double-height ceilings and plenty of natural light, in addition to a couple of bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom enjoys views overlooking the orchard and terraced lawns from the open mezzanine beside it. Outside in the garden, you'll find a contemplative space abuzz with insect life throughout the spring and summer, thanks to an abundance of wildflowers. There are plenty of walks from the house, many along secluded footpaths traversing unspoiled valleys – there's a chance you might not meet another soul. If you can tear yourself away, you'll find plenty of pubs and hotels serving fantastic seasonal produce and locally brewed beers. Alternatively, drop by Alder Vineyard – a ten-minute drive away – for a journey far beyond the bottle.

There are plenty of spots from which you can gaze out at the pretty meadows, woodland and the banks of the River Tamar that surround the address, whether that's out through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the main living space or while seated on the roof terrace bordered by a leafy pergola. However, the home's interior is well worth your attention, too. Certain features have been retained from the building's industrious past, including wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonework, but otherwise, the design is bright and contemporary.

The number of amenities available to guests distinguishes this home from the pack. Not only is there a homely wood-burning stove in the main space, but there's a games room with a ping-pong table and darts board in a section that was once a cattle shed, plus lots of equipment for outdoor games beside the forecourt and lawned area. Here you will find tables, benches and additional seating for your exclusive use and space to stoke up barbecues and challenge the group to a variety of games.

Elsewhere on the site, there are the ruins of a silver and lead mine accompanied by the pumping engine house and smithy, part of the industrial landscape recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are other footpaths that lead off into the countryside, but you can also stroll down to the banks of the River Tamar, on which there's a two-hour window every day when it's safe to use it for water sports.

The home makes up part of a former Duchy of Cornwall daffodil farm – nowadays, chickens and ducks roam the grounds freely – and there are even Highland cows too. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are fantastic local walks (maps and wellies provided) on your doorstep. You can enjoy the amenities of the farm, too, including a tennis court, an orchard with a hammock, basketball hoop, woodland, and a private shingle beach right on the river – there are forty acres to explore in total. There's certainly plenty to keep you occupied here –  your hosts are Cornwall Wildlife Trust Members, which affords you access to wildlife education sessions for children, including mini-beast safaris, rock pooling events, and bird box making. You can also book a foraging workshop, stand-up paddleboarding, wine tasting, spa treatments, afternoon teas, suppers and more.

This Georgian period manor sits in the bucolic splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The foundations date back to the 15th century and the manor home you see here today was built in 1787. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. There’s an outdoor kitchen with a built-in Argentinian grill and a wood-fired pizza oven for big family meals outside, and there’s a fire pit should you want to watch the sky for shooting stars long into the night. From the various viewpoints around the gardens, you can see why it is thought that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Hound of the Baskervilles while he stayed here.

When you've worked up an appetite, there's a picturesque lakeside café and bistro for an easy bite to eat. Or head back to the lodge to rustle up dinner in that made-for-action kitchen. Then all that's left to do is slide the bi-fold doors back and pad outside onto the wraparound private terrace – there's a hot tub ready and waiting.

Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.
