In a quiet village in Devon, this cottage is all about kicking back and escaping to the countryside. There’s a cosy village pub within easy walking distance and the neighbouring village of Buckland Abbey is home to a beautiful, centuries-old abbey to explore. For a day in the buzzing coastal city of Plymouth, it’s just a half-hour drive.

The cottage was fully renovated in 2018, keeping that countryside idyll feel throughout. We love the outside space – the babbling stream running through the garden provides a peaceful soundtrack and a private hot tub for a soothing soak at the end of the day. There’s seating for drinks and dining on the patio and a pretty little summer house should the weather turn.

Inside, the black wood beams against the white ceiling are striking and homely at the same time. Slate floors and exposed stonework create an 18th-century cottage feel and there’s a traditional cast-iron wood-burner in the centre of the living room. Bedrooms are cosy yet sunny, with French doors letting the sunlight stream in. Plus, there’s a free-standing tub in the main bathroom which begs for a long soak with a glass of something bubbly.

The home has been sympathetically converted to retain its evident charm, with the addition of luxurious modern comforts (including wi-fi – so you won't be completely disconnected from the world). The spacious kitchen is equipped with an AGA for the ultimate in countryside chic, though there's also an induction hob as a backup, plus antique chairs and a beautiful walnut dining table. Through to the new section of the house and you're treated to double-height ceilings and plenty of natural light, in addition to a couple of bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom enjoys views overlooking the orchard and terraced lawns from the open mezzanine beside it. Outside in the garden, you'll find a contemplative space abuzz with insect life throughout the spring and summer, thanks to an abundance of wildflowers. There are plenty of walks from the house, many along secluded footpaths traversing unspoiled valleys – there's a chance you might not meet another soul. If you can tear yourself away, you'll find plenty of pubs and hotels serving fantastic seasonal produce and locally brewed beers. Alternatively, drop by Alder Vineyard – a ten-minute drive away – for a journey far beyond the bottle.

Sitting in the middle of a thirty-acre farm in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this barn conversion is a fittingly impressive home for such an idyllic location. 

There are plenty of spots from which you can gaze out at the pretty meadows, woodland and the banks of the River Tamar that surround the address, whether that's out through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the main living space or while seated on the roof terrace bordered by a leafy pergola. However, the home's interior is well worth your attention, too. Certain features have been retained from the building's industrious past, including wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonework, but otherwise, the design is bright and contemporary.

The number of amenities available to guests distinguishes this home from the pack. Not only is there a homely wood-burning stove in the main space, but there's a games room with a ping-pong table and darts board in a section that was once a cattle shed, plus lots of equipment for outdoor games beside the forecourt and lawned area. Here you will find tables, benches and additional seating for your exclusive use and space to stoke up barbecues and challenge the group to a variety of games.

Elsewhere on the site, there are the ruins of a silver and lead mine accompanied by the pumping engine house and smithy, part of the industrial landscape recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are other footpaths that lead off into the countryside, but you can also stroll down to the banks of the River Tamar, on which there's a two-hour window every day when it's safe to use it for water sports.

This Georgian period manor sits in the bucolic splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The foundations date back to the 15th century and the manor home you see here today was built in 1787. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. There’s an outdoor kitchen with a built-in Argentinian grill and a wood-fired pizza oven for big family meals outside, and there’s a fire pit should you want to watch the sky for shooting stars long into the night. Based on an even earlier fortified home, its turrets and striking architecture mean it's always been referred to as 'the castle'. With grand hallways, antique furniture and character features at every turn, this really could be your own stately home for a time. Fit for a large group or an extended family – perhaps celebrating a special occasion – it's a joy to stay here at any time of year. The two drawing rooms have open fires for winter nights, while the solar-heated pool will delight during the summer. Follow the paths down to the picturesque bathing hut on the quay, or up to original owner Sir James Tillie's mausoleum. You'll have all the charming rustic touches you would hope for — exposed stone walls, a vaulted ceiling and a log burner — but there's a modern feel, and absolutely no chintz. You can slip into your own wood-fired hot tub just outside the back door, and the host has been thoughtful enough to provide a generous stack of logs to get you started. Meet the farm animals or set off alongside the private Nature Reserve to discover the private shingle beach on the River Tamar. Later, take advantage of some of the farm's other surprises — a communal games room with ping-pong, a shared tennis court, a hammock hidden away in the orchard, and a basketball hoop. With a number of extra activities also bookable, you can take part in a foraging workshop, try out stand-up paddleboarding or get involved in local wine tasting. Alternatively, you can drive to the port city of Plymouth in about forty minutes and visit the National Marine Aquarium.

The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. We love the hot tub in the pretty garden – it’s the perfect place to unwind. The great outdoors is the real draw here. The home makes up part of a former Duchy of Cornwall daffodil farm – nowadays, chickens and ducks roam the grounds freely – and there are even Highland cows too. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are fantastic local walks (maps and wellies provided) on your doorstep. You can enjoy the amenities of the farm, too, including a tennis court, an orchard with a hammock, basketball hoop, woodland, and a private shingle beach right on the river – there are forty acres to explore in total. There's certainly plenty to keep you occupied here –  your hosts are Cornwall Wildlife Trust Members, which affords you access to wildlife education sessions for children, including mini-beast safaris, rock pooling events, and bird box making. You can also book a foraging workshop, stand-up paddleboarding, wine tasting, spa treatments, afternoon teas, suppers and more.

Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.
