Follow the stairs up from the deck to reach the rooftop terrace, a sun trap and the perfect place to relax with a book in summer. 

When you're ready to see even more of this corner of England, walk 150 yards to Challaborough Bay, the sandy horseshoe shaped cove, perfect for a bracing swim or some surfing lessons. The South West Coast Path is a two-minute walk away and if followed for just over an hour and a half, will take you through gorgeous coastal scenery to Wonwell Beach. The famous seaside town of Salcombe can be reached in thirty minutes by car, where you will find excellent fish restaurants, the iconic Cranch’s sweet shop, and local ice cream shops serving honeycomb ice cream, a Salcombe classic. 

When you arrive home, settle in on the cosy sofas for a movie night, or fire up the bluetooth speaker and enjoy drinks on the terrace as the sun sets over the horizon.

You’ll find this timber-clad, eco-friendly home on Devon’s South Hams coastline, a forty-eight-minute drive from Plymouth and a two-minute walk from Challaborough Bay Beach. There’s an open-plan living space that’s ideal for socialising – keep glasses topped up as conversation flows in the seating area while your group’s appointed chef cooks up a storm in the sleek kitchen. On sunny days, take your meals out on the terrace or head up to the roof deck and dine with views of the water. Once you’re refuelled and raring to go, grab your beach essentials and take the quick trip to Challaborough’s pebbled shore. Amble along the South West Coast Path for twenty-five minutes to the stunning Ayrmer Cove to find beasties in rock pools and hidden sandy spots. Return home to rinse salty wetsuits in the outdoor shower, then bundle into the snug for a movie marathon and hot cups of cocoa.

It’s also in the perfect spot for refreshing walks along the coastal path, as well as providing easy access to the heart of Hope Cove. Free private parking is available here and two well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you during your stay. Inside, the rooms are family-friendly with bunk beds in the second bedroom and children's amenities available on request. Outside, meanwhile, the home ups the ante with a sunny front patio, as well as a back garden complete with a gazebo for alfresco dining, gas and charcoal barbecues and a pizza oven. It’s ideally located a short stroll from Island Street where you can nip over to its artisanal shops for morning croissants and essentials, while Salcombe Castle and the nearby beaches can easily be reached by car.

This 250-year-old thatched cottage will charm you from the get-go. It's tucked down a winding lane surrounded by rolling countryside, sandwiched between Hope Cove and Salcombe. There's no doubt the location is impressive, but we reckon the home is even better. The garden is the epitome of outdoor living, with a bubbling hot tub, a summerhouse, and a panoramic terrace. You can toast marshmallows around the fire pit, or when the weather turns, head inside to the drawing room and get cosy in front of the fire. The cherry on top is the shepherd's hut, where a lucky couple can unwind in total privacy. No wonder English Home Magazine deemed it a 'must-stay' on the Devon coast.

And while the outdoor dining set is a little sun-bleached, it’s a lovely spot to enjoy alfresco breakfasts and barbecue dinners. Inside, the open-plan kitchen and dining room are perfect for entertaining family and friends, while the living room is an inviting space to share a few games of cards.

Overlooking an arm of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary, this home not only has a stunning waterfront view in its arsenal, but the rolling countryside packs a pretty impressive punch, too. For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. When it's time for some seaside nostalgia, spend bucket-and-spade days down on Salcombe's sandy beaches – just a twenty-minute scenic stroll along the coastal path past the ruins of the village's castle fort. Up the ante with sailing, kayaking, and surfing on the estuary (a five-minute stroll away). Or mooch along to the cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs and ice cream parlours of the village's well-heeled high street (two minutes from your door) – you'll be in good company.

Central Kingsbridge, with an established restaurant scene, is just a ten-minute walk away.

Tucked away in a secluded valley, yet with South Ham's water's edge and Devon's beaches a short drive away, the setting of this cottage is one of a kind. Part of an impressive country estate, kids will love the shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground and vast communal lawns found within the grounds – not to mention the trampoline, slide, climbing frame, sit-on tractors and football pitch. It's worth noting this elegant cottage only has a small private courtyard leading off the kitchen. But with those shared terraces overlooking the valley for barbecues and pizza oven nights, we can forgive that.

Along with the idyllic views, you’ll be welcomed by neutral yet snug rooms (the living area features a cosy log burner) as well as a secure private garden – an ideal spot for children and pups to explore. And when it comes to adventures further afield, it’s just a fifteen-minute drive to the local beaches at Bantham and Bigbury-on-Sea, while beautiful walking trails can be followed straight from the door.

Situated in a private gated development, this penthouse apartment is all about the views. Easily accessible courtesy of the lift from the covered parking area, head on up to the third floor and you’ll find an open-plan, light-filled space waiting to welcome you home. The sea vistas are best enjoyed from the balcony over a glass of wine, but you’re spoilt with scenery from most parts of this home – fling open the bi-fold doors and take it all in. Better still, Salcombe's centre is just a short stroll away, so you'll never be too far from shops, eateries and the water.

Perched in the peaceful village of West Charleton and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, its setting is idyllic. Inside, discover three well-proportioned bedrooms boasting floor-to-ceiling windows to let the outside in and a palatial primary bedroom suite with a private deck and hot tub for the ultimate relaxation. Outside, kids will love exploring the labyrinth of gardens, with water features and a shepherd's hut offering spectacular views across the South Hams. Ready for a change of scene? Charming Salcombe is just a fifteen-minute drive, and Slapton Sands are even closer.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

There’s no chance of forgetting where you are when you stay in The Bowline. The nautical theme runs through the entire apartment (and when you head out, the entire town of Salcombe), but with good reason. This part of south Devon has some of the most picturesque coast in the country, so it makes sense that the area emphasises that. The apartment itself is charming, with a real homely atmosphere. It’s not huge, but if you don’t try to pack it out, it’s plenty big enough, and Diana’s hosting is top-notch, which goes a very long way.

This apartment lies on the shores of Salcombe's South Sands beach, with lovely views from the private balcony. Both bedrooms enjoy their own en-suites and the kitchen is fully equipped for preparing family meals or romantic dinners. To top it all off your host can help arrange a cooked breakfast and concierge services for an additional fee.

Sailor's Cove

Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone. 

The Great Outward

Tucked away in a peaceful but central part of Salcombe, this home had our attention the second we caught those views. With a raised position and spread over three floors, the windows are perfect for watching the town’s iconic harbour. Downstairs, the large living space combines the dining room, kitchen, and living room, meaning guests can easily break off into smaller groups while still being together. Nearby, the adventurous can try crabbing along Victoria Quay or even have a go at paddle boarding. You’ll also want to take advantage of the free parking permit, ideal for exploring even more of Devon’s stunning coastline.

The Seashells for Days

Set in the heart of bustling Salcombe, this former fisherman's cottage is a delightful place to call home. As you can expect, the interior has plenty of coastal charm, though it is a tad snug upstairs. All the contemporary comforts are accounted for, be it underfloor heating or White Company toiletries. Evenings call for cocktails in the front courtyard – there's a distillery just across the street where you can sample local gin. Also within walking distance are Salcombe's artisan shops, independent eateries, and picturesque harbour, perfect for dog walks in the sun.

Wind & Sail

Right on the water’s edge and surrounded by Batson Creek on three sides is this Salcombe home. Boasting two moorings, two outdoor terraces and a barbecue, it’s an ideal place to base yourself during your Devonshire stay. While you’ll be able to enjoy the tranquillity of this location, you’ll also benefit from the proximity of Salcombe’s independent boutiques and fish and chip shops. After a day kayaking (your host provides guests with two to use), what could be better than an alfresco dinner overlooking the bay? 

The Sea's Call

One of six natural stone cottages tucked away within a secluded valley between Dartmouth and Salcombe, this home's location is idyllic. With no local amenities to walk to, you'll need a car to get out and about. Though you're rarely a fifteen-minute drive from South Devon's sheltered coves and South Ham's water's edge is even closer. There's plenty to keep everyone busy within the cottage's vast communal grounds, too. Think shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground, communal lawns and alfresco terraces. Prefer a little more privacy? That wood-burning fire and small suntrap terrace back at the elegant cottage should do nicely.
