This cosy cottage in Dittisham is the perfect place to kick back, relax and enjoy the incredible views of the River Dart. If you're anything like us, you'll want to spend every spare moment in the courtyard garden, watching the boats float by. Summer mornings call for coffee and alfresco breakfasts, while evenings are the perfect excuse to pour yourself a glass of wine and admire the South Devon sunsets.

Inside, you can't help but swoon over the comfortable and chic spaces. Unwind with a good book in the window seat, or throw a log on the wood-burner and snuggle up on the leather sofa for a Netflix movie night. For dinner, rustle up something tasty in the kitchen – this area is home to some of the country's best seafood – or head down to the local pub, just one minute away, when you don't fancy cooking.

Speaking of location, you've got the Dart Valley at your fingertips. You're just a stone's throw from the quayside, where you can hop on a ferry to Dartmouth and Greenway. Craving sand and sun? Drive twenty minutes to Blackpool Sands and while away the afternoon by the sea. 

Gazing Upstream

This restored barn makes the perfect setting for a refreshing rural escape. Surrounded by the beautiful Devon countryside, you’ll find easy access to walking trails as well as the picturesque village of Dittisham – just a mile away. And while days can be spent exploring, by night you’ll love returning home to relax by the wood-burning fire. Pets are welcome to join you during your stay, plus there is a large private garden with outdoor seating – perfect for summer evening drinks. 

Trinity Barn

There’s no doubt you’ll be dazzled by this spectacular apartment the moment you step through the front door – the views of the sea alone are enough to wow anyone. But then there’s the gorgeously decorated, luxurious interior, which makes this sea-facing pad a truly rare gem. 

Nestled in the idyllic town of Torquay, this is a dream base for a coastal getaway, especially if you’re here on a romantic holiday. Inside, you’ll find a stunning living room, with those huge windows letting in streams of natural light and offering unmatched vistas. We love the sleek, modern décor and the plush furnishings, inviting you to make yourself right at home and relax after a day of coastal exploring. 

While there’s no shortage of excellent dining options in the area, you may also opt for rustling up something delicious in the well-equipped kitchen, in which case the stylish island and stools will provide the perfect setting for a romantic supper. 

Enjoy a night of restful sleep in the plush bedroom, but not before an indulgent bubble bath in the spa-like bathroom. In the morning, you’ll wake up restored and ready for another day in sunny Devon. 

With A View Like That 

This waterfront apartment has bagged itself a prime position on the banks of the River Dart, with views across the water and out to sea. And with two balconies – one off the living area and one off the main bedroom – there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy them. While the open-plan kitchen is on the small side, it is well-equipped. And if you fancy dining out, just hop on a ferry for the short and scenic trip to Dartmouth, where you’ll find a choice of restaurants and pubs.

Waterside Wonder

How annoying is it when you pack everything for an afternoon on the beach and make the journey over, before realising you've forgotten something crucial? At this home, Paignton Beach sits less than a hundred metres from the front door, so you can pop back in no time at all.

That may be the apartment's biggest perk, but there's more to the address than its proximity to Tor Bay. We've got a lot of praise for the contemporary design entirely absent of nautical kitsch – just lots of natural light, sleek tiling, and soothing white walls. Perhaps some might see the open living space as a little too limited in size, but there's just enough space in here for small groups to relax and cook modest meals.

Aside from the nearby stretch of sand, there are seafront pubs and the town's Victorian Pier with which to get acquainted, while the famous South West Coast Path runs close by the house and continues in both directions for dramatically beautiful walking routes.

King of the Sandcastle

Elevated high above the River Dart, this house is as beautiful as the view from its windows. Set across three floors, the open plan ground floor features a cosy living room, leading to an ornate fireplace and a dining table next to large panelled windows, so you can admire the picturesque view over breakfast. The front door leads out onto a sun-soaked deck, complete with a wooden table and a barbecue – the perfect place for long alfresco lunches and sunset drinks with panoramic vistas of the river. Each bedroom is cosy and characterful, with nautical artwork and light wooden furniture. 

There are plenty of activities for all ages on your doorstep. For a Devonshire classic, head to the banks of the river for a spot of crabbing, and then grab fish and chips from the award-winning local chippy a nine-minute walk from the house. When the sun shines, Devon’s beaches could be Mediterranean. The wide expanses of Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes by car, where you can enjoy a day of splashing in the sea and building sandcastles. There are many boat and ferry trips up the River Dart – your hosts are happy to recommend you some excellent day trips as well as tips on the best walks and other excursions. Dartmouth is a twelve-minute walk away, where you’ll find top seafood restaurants and laid-back country pubs. 

Riverside Breeze

This 19th-century cottage in the heart of Dittisham is ideal for a small family wanting a tranquil valley view. Overlooking Mill Creek, it's peaceful with plenty of homely charm. Though it has been modernised, some of the original features remain. If you are looking for something sleek, this home might not be for you, but it is well-kept, bright and plenty comfortable. Here, you can hire a boat to explore the valley at your own pace, and there's also ample opportunity for paddle boarding or kayaking. Dartmouth is a short drive away, and so are Kingswear and Totnes. 

Mellow Mill Creek

Coast meets country in this Dittisham home. Throw open the generous patio doors to indulge in indoor-outdoor living at its finest – and believe us when we say, this is a garden you’ll never tire of. Perfect for families, little ones will love to explore this haven for wildlife – just bear in mind that there’s an unfenced pond and stream here, so children and dogs will need to be supervised when enjoying the outdoor space. Is the coast calling your name? It’s a mere twenty-minute drive to Blackpool Sands. 

Nature's Oasis

Sitting less than 100 metres from sandy Paignton Beach, this modern studio apartment offers an ideal seaside getaway for a couple or solo traveller looking to explore this scenic slice of the South Devon coast. 

Inside, the decor is all crisp whites and nautical nods to the home’s privileged locale. An inviting king-size bed takes centre stage, while a window-side reading nook welcomes early morning coffees in the armchair while taking in beautiful beach and promenade views. For even more uninterrupted vistas, step out onto the small private balcony and breathe in the fresh, salty air. Enjoy the sunset here over a glass of wine before rustling up a tasty meal in the kitchenette or going out to explore the many nearby restaurants, treating yourself to their catch of the day, of course. 

When it comes to ways to fill your days here, Paignton Beach is an obvious must, as is its promenade with its views across the bay towards Torquay. You’ve also got the delights of Paignton Pier nearby – dating back to 1897 and boasting a plethora of amusements, games and cafes – while the popular seaside resort of Torquay is ten minutes away by car. 


Painted Waves

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.


The Straight and Narrow

Although the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers gave the impression that accommodation in Torquay left much to be desired, this majestic townhouse completely dispels that notion. 

Having been renovated in 2022, the design brings together boldly patterned wallpaper, a smattering of antique furnishings, some well-chosen pieces of artwork and tufted furnishings to create an interior that feels traditional but far from stale. The bright blue tiling in the bathroom is rather fetching, too

It must be said that the standout features are found in the garden, which is filled with flowers during the warmer months. As well as offering plenty of seating out on the terrace, there's also a hot tub in which you can pass summer evenings.

If the weather gods are smiling down upon you during your stay, the shingle beach at Anstey's Cove can be reached in under fifteen minutes, while Babbacombe Beach takes ten minutes more than that. The Kent Cavern caves are only eight minutes away on foot, too.
