Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

Thanks to its prime coastline location and eclectic history, Whitby has been drawing in tourists for hundreds of years and if you're tempted to pay a visit, this home is a great base from which to explore the Yorkshire town.

Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. This home in Egton is the perfect compromise between seclusion and a beach holiday. With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. Whilst there, be sure to walk the promenade for a gorgeous view of the Church of Saint Mary and try your hand at the claw machine in the pier arcade. After a lunch of fresh seafood, head to the Whitby Abbey, a fourteen-minute walk from Whitby Beach, to visit the renowned ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula.

Back home, take in the tranquillity of the secluded escape by sitting out on the deck with a cup of coffee. Watch the breeze play through the line of trees surrounding you as you catch up on your favourite podcast. We recommend, at least once, sitting out here to watch the sun rise or set, maybe even both. Inside, get the cacao ready for movie night in front of the fire, and when you’re ready for bed, swing by the bathroom first for a soak in the tub.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. Sure, it’s a studio, but far roomier than you might expect, and actually rather perfect for a romantic getaway. Draw the curtains to let the light stream in and spend a lazy morning in bed with coffee and a crossword puzzle before finally dragging yourselves out of bed and into the kitchen for breakfast. Head out from there on a romantic walk through town and toward the promenade. 

There are also plenty of hiking options or walks through the maze of The Valley Gardens. If you’re not walking – arm in arm is best – then you can always hop in the car for a road trip with an epic playlist. After a meal at a romantic restaurant, snuggle on the coach with the fire crackling in the wood-burning stove, and just appreciate the space, the moment, and each other. 

Sanddollar

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep.

And when thoughts turn to food, there are some delightful pubs just moments away. And a charming tearoom for your fix of Yorkshire Fat Rascals is dangerously close - it's just below your door.

Whether you fancy a delicious pub lunch (there's an excellent inn five minutes away), a country walk (there are miles of trails through the Esk Valley heading towards Grosmont) or a day at the beach (Whitby is less than ten minutes away by car) – there's something for everyone to enjoy in this neck of the woods.
