We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. If music isn't your thing, watch a movie in the cinema room or play some table tennis. After all that activity, unwind by the open fire if it's chilly, read a book on the Barcelona-style chair or have a soak in one of the freestanding baths.

A quintessentially English countryside escape, you may have seen this characterful 16th-century manor feature in the film Mr Holmes and more notably in season three of The Crown. In honour of such a humble appearance – we've named this home after the episode in which it features, titled "Cri de Coeur". Surrounded by 720-acres of National Trust farmland, the property boasts a location amidst breathtaking natural beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. There's even a 30-acre family-run vineyard owned that guests have the opportunity to discover on a wine tour and tasting organised by the hosts. Make the most of the on-site wine tasting lounge – it's the perfect place to socialise after a day out in the country air. 

As well as communal access to the winery, you'll have private access to an entire wing of the home as well as a private piece of the garden – separate from any other guests. Stone paths pave the way inside to the cosy main living space with a traditional aesthetic throughout. While there isn't a kitchen as such in the wing, the living area includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and some dining essentials so that you can enjoy simple meals around the table. After country walks through the sheep fields or to Winchelsea Beach (fifty minutes away on foot) – make returning and snuggling up in front of the log burner fire a cosy ritual that you'll crave long after your stay. From the bedroom windows, take in the best views in the house, as the vistas sweep across the rolling hills and out to sea. This charming cottage lies in the village of Staplecross, a wonderful mix of the modern and traditional. With a maximum occupancy of four adults, one child and one pet, this home is ideal for a lovely family stay. Underfloor heating, a brick fireplace and large windows let light in and make this cottage extra cosy. You'll want a car to explore the nearby towns and landmarks, including Rye, Battle, and Bodiam Castle. You'll find plenty of independent shops, great eateries and local vineyards, ripe for days out.

There's getting back to nature and then there's staying in this stunning 18th-century barn conversion, set on 350 acres of nature reserve. The house's location sounds like the start of a poem: next to a wildflower meadow and on the edge of a stream – beautiful. With wetlands and woodlands all around, birdwatching is easy through the double-height windows in the living area or while sipping a drink on the patio. Make the most of the setting on one of the owner’s wildlife safari tours, or just admire the passing Konik ponies, and keep your eyes peeled for animals and insects. There's just as much to explore within the house. Oak beams run across the ceiling of every room, giving the space a cute, country feel. As refined and attractive a home as you're likely to see, this single-storey apartment is a wing of a Grade II Gothic mansion. But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. But it also boasts some tasteful modern touches, like the emperor-size bed with a cashmere and wool mattress and 800 thread count linen in the master bedroom, the stylish marble bathrooms, the cosy double bed and built-in bunkbed in the second bedroom. Comfortable and warm, it's a real home from home, with a well kitted-out kitchen (including a basket of local produce) and unbeatable views framed by tall windows.

With beautiful country views and a peaceful setting on the owners’ sheep farm, this perfectly petite home is the ideal base for exploring the Kentish Weald. You’re a ten-minute drive from the well-heeled town of Tenterden with its independent boutiques and tearooms as well as many National Trust properties. The beautiful gardens at Great Dixter, just 11 mins away, or the famous Pashley Manor make for a fabulous day out or head just up the road to the pretty weather-boarded village of Rolvenden for the weekly farmers’ market or a pub lunch. The cottage itself is a cute red-brick bolthole where sheep and donkeys graze in the fields out front. Admire the surrounding farmland from the rocking chair on the wooden deck, or watch the kids run free on the lawn. Inside, it’s a cheerful medley of white, teal and magenta and kitsch flowery curtains add a bit of character. Throw open the French doors to let the country air stream in, and perhaps curl up with one of the books from the mini-library to the sounds of sheep in the fields.

Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

It's just few minutes walk to the nearby pub, farm shop and to the quiet beach at Winchelsea, while the medieval town of Rye – packed with shops and restaurants – is just a seven-minute drive. For more things to do, head to the nature reserve and pebble beach at Rye Harbour, drive to the famous dunes of nearby Camber Sands or take part in one of Winchelsea's 'cellar tours' looking at the ancient undercrofts of the town's oldest buildings. There's even a neighbouring vineyard where you can tour, taste and maybe pick up a few bottles for your stay.

A stone’s throw from Camber Sands, this stylish home takes beach shack to glamorous new heights, making it the perfect coastal retreat for friendly get-togethers and extended families. 

The interior is characterfully designed using reclaimed and antique materials, offering a revitalised version of seaside chic. The host is evidently a fan of up-cycling – look out for creative touches such as repurposed doors, stain-glass windows and rustic radiators. We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. End the day with early-evening sundowners on the front porch, sharing anecdotes and listening to the waves lapping in and out of the shore, before heading into the local village for a spot of traditional pub grub, five minutes away on foot.

Wood-clad and terracotta-roofed, this idyllic little cottage is surrounded by fields and forest as far as the eye can see. Take in the countryside on a walk around the farm (with its own vineyard), meandering down to the river that runs through the grounds – and say hello to the owner’s two friendly Newfoundlands, who always love to welcome new guests. For a day trip, it’s a short drive to the historical town of Rye, where you can wander cobbled streets and admire the medieval architecture before grabbing lunch at a local spot. In warmer months, go for a dip in the sea or bask in the sun at Camber Sands, a twenty-five minute drive away.

Inside the cottage, it’s pure enchantment with oak beams on display and a stunning Moroccan-style bed in the master bedroom. On chilly evenings, get the wood-burner crackling in the open-plan living area. A wall of glass doors fronts the living room, with beautiful countryside views. This clifftop cottage in the Hastings Country Park lived a former life as one of the original coastguard terraced cottages. Tucked away at the foot of a country lane, this cottage sits cosy on the coastline. Its views go on for miles, with sighs of Dover, Beachy Head and even France from the top floor (with good weather!). Staying here is about nights around one of the two fireplaces, and relaxing with a book and glass of wine in the conservatory or in the bath. Exploration is on your doorstep in the surroundings of the Hastings Country Park, where ponies frolic and the wilderness goes on for miles. Further afield, central Hastings is a fifteen-minute drive for those nights when you just need to hang your apron and go out for dinner.

It opens onto the trendy and whimsical lounge, with its yellow armchair and eclectic decorations. We loved the garden most of all – slide open the glass doors and step outside into the fresh air. Outside, you'll find an alfresco dining area – the perfect spot to tuck into the cake host Georgina leaves for you – and a cosy lounge area surrounding an open-air fire pit, which is ideal for enjoying a moment of calm while watching the sunset. You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. When you're ready for sleep, drift off in the plush beds in the country-style bedrooms, then wake up feeling well-rested and ready to explore Kent. You're perfectly located for adventures – make the twenty-minute drive to the coastal Dungeness National Nature Reserve or reward yourself after a stroll with a pint in one of the delicious pubs nearby.

A short walk along the Saxon Shore Way will take you to a charming 14th-century pub or you can just keep going for miles in this famously flat landscape. But if you fancy a change of scenery, spend the day on the coast – Camber Sands is only twenty minutes away by car.

Let's start with the design – there's a cow-print sofa that puts the 'moo' in smooth and funky cow-themed artwork adorning the walls. It's not something you see every day – especially not in a seaside village in East Sussex – but that's precisely why we love it. But the fun doesn't end there – a huge collection of DVDs, books and CDs will keep the boredom at bay, there’s a desk for remote working and the compact yet well-equipped kitchen is ideal for rustling up tasty breakfasts to start the day off right. Our favourite spot is the chaise lounge in the bedroom – sprawl out with a glass of wine, a good book and admire the views over St Leonards.

The main cottage has two cosy bedrooms, while the third bedroom is located in a cute boathouse in the garden – making this a great option for those seeking a little extra privacy.

While the grand spaces and classically decorated rooms of this historic estate in the rolling East Sussex landscape speak for themselves, we can come up with a few more reasons to choose to live your next country escape as the lord or lady of this manor. Expansive views of quintessential English meadows will greet you all year round, though in spring, a sea of bluebells in the surrounding woods makes it an even more attractive proposition. In summer, a heated pool and tennis court provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. In a spectacular setting, they're part of a Grade II Listed mansion that dates from 1819 and face the ivy-clad ruins of a 13th Century abbey. Definitely a place for lovers of historical architecture, it also happens to be within half an hour's walk of Winchelsea's quiet beach and the beautiful nature reserve of Rye Harbour. 

With one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor, each apartment has two bedrooms, along with cosy living rooms, modern kitchens and dining spaces. Fully updated but retaining charming period details like the fireplaces, ornate cornice and stone mullion windows, they're both beautifully put together with great attention to detail. We love the upstairs apartment's long balcony, where double doors open it up to the living room and both bedrooms, and we're big fans of the super stylish bathrooms.

There's a real surprise outside, with private, fenced gardens for both homes, outdoor furniture and barbecues. And best of all each comes with its own log-fired hot tub – perfect for a long soak after a day playing on the beach.

Nearby you can walk the ancient streets of Rye, packed with shops and great places to eat, play golf or walk your dog on the beaches. Even the famous dunes of Camber Sands are within easy reach. Or stay closer to home, tour the neighbouring vineyard, walk to the local farm shop and book yourselves on a 'cellar tour' of this town's medieval undercrofts. 


The Two Friars

Mouth-watering restaurants, cosy pubs and charming independent shops are all just moments away from this apartment nestled on the famous George Street in Hasting's Old Town. Step out the front door right onto the pretty pedestrianised lane and walk three minutes to the pebbled seafront, stopping for a coffee and a pastry along the way. It's the perfect spot for exploring Hastings – right in the heart of the vibrant city centre, yet the double-glazed windows keep the outside noise to a minimum. Set on the second floor, this apartment has a cool, contemporary vibe. Edison pendant lights hang above the dining table, funky artwork by underground artists Pyky adorns the exposed brick wall and the squishy leather sofa is both comfortable and chic. The kitchen is compact, but it's well-stocked with crockery if you're in the mood for a homecooked meal – though with so many excellent eateries nearby, we bet you'll want to treat yourself to dinner out and about. We love the rainfall shower in the bathroom, and the bed is a cosy place to rest your head and recharge after a long day strolling around town. 

Iron & Brick

This striking black townhouse in the seaside town of Hastings holds a few secrets inside. First of all, the eclectic living room, set around a big bay window with ingenious half-fold wooden shutters that allow in natural light while keeping a bit of privacy. The wood-burning stove is a cosy bonus for cold nights and the walls are adorned with vibrant modern art. Then there’s the private patio garden with its summer house set up as a creative studio. The outdoors is illuminated with stringed lights at night where a sunken, hand-crafted picnic table and chairs await. Finally, our favourite spot has to be the Japanese onsen style bathroom, with its cascading waterfall sink and a bubble Jacuzzi tub designed specifically for the space. The bathroom is a testament to the rest of the house, where bannisters feel hand-crafted from reclaimed wood and book-filled shelves in the bedrooms are bespoke. Venturing out into Hastings, you’ll find the long sweep of sandy beach is just a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the heart of town, brimming with shops, restaurants and cafés is ten minutes on foot.

Sea Jet

This delightfully picturesque studio barn is set within the grounds of the owners' home, surrounded by stunning countryside views. The timber-frame barn has been carefully renovated into a stylish open-plan space with thoughtful touches and a green outlook. An external wooden staircase leads down to the mature garden which features a large wildlife pond. Cook up lunch on the barbecue while the sun shines or if you feel like exploring further afield there are some great walks nearby. And as you're right in the heart of rural Kent, an abundance of famous gardens are practically on your doorstep including Hole Park which is renowned for its stunning springtime array of bluebells, magnolia, azaleas and daffodils. Closer to home, the local village of Benenden is home to a cafe, butcher and a brilliant pub that’s perfect for a nightcap before heading home for an evening of peace and quiet.

The Secret Loft

Make yourself at home at this rustic pair of linked barns which have been designed with nature and sustainability in mind. Set amongst green fields that offer sweeping countryside views, the home offers the ideal setting for a memorable group getaway in Kent. The main barn is perfect for gathering around in the large living and dining area for some downtime whether it be cosying up by the fire for a movie night or breaking out a board game for some friendly competition. If you’re looking for a day trip, the beach at Camber Sands is a twenty-minute drive away where you can veg out in the sun or brave the waters for a swim, and walkers and cyclists will love the nearby Saxon Shore Way that traces the coast and offers stunning views over the cliffs.
