We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. If music isn't your thing, watch a movie in the cinema room or play some table tennis. This charming cottage lies in the village of Staplecross, a wonderful mix of the modern and traditional. With a maximum occupancy of four adults, one child and one pet, this home is ideal for a lovely family stay. This dog-friendly stone cottage was once part of the late comedian Spike Milligan’s home and, while it can be rented alongside the adjoining cottage for larger groups, we think it makes an ideal self-contained retreat. Both the airy open-plan living-dining area and the main bedroom open directly onto the garden, which features a barbecue for alfresco dining with a side of sea breeze. It's perfectly placed, too, with Rye, Camber Sands, and Hastings all within easy driving distance.

A quintessentially English countryside escape, you may have seen this characterful 16th-century manor feature in the film Mr Holmes and more notably in season three of The Crown. In honour of such a humble appearance – we've named this home after the episode in which it features, titled "Cri de Coeur". Surrounded by 720-acres of National Trust farmland, the property boasts a location amidst breathtaking natural beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. There's even a 30-acre family-run vineyard owned that guests have the opportunity to discover on a wine tour and tasting organised by the hosts. Make the most of the on-site wine tasting lounge – it's the perfect place to socialise after a day out in the country air. 

As well as communal access to the winery, you'll have private access to an entire wing of the home as well as a private piece of the garden – separate from any other guests. Stone paths pave the way inside to the cosy main living space with a traditional aesthetic throughout. While there isn't a kitchen as such in the wing, the living area includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and some dining essentials so that you can enjoy simple meals around the table. After country walks through the sheep fields or to Winchelsea Beach (fifty minutes away on foot) – make returning and snuggling up in front of the log burner fire a cosy ritual that you'll crave long after your stay. From the bedroom windows, take in the best views in the house, as the vistas sweep across the rolling hills and out to sea. As refined and attractive a home as you're likely to see, this single-storey apartment is a wing of a Grade II Gothic mansion. But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. For more things to do, head to the nature reserve and pebble beach at Rye Harbour, drive to the famous dunes of nearby Camber Sands or take part in one of Winchelsea's 'cellar tours' looking at the ancient undercrofts of the town's oldest buildings. There's even a neighbouring vineyard where you can tour, taste and maybe pick up a few bottles for your stay.

Spread over three buildings, this converted farm dates back to the 17th century and maintains plenty of historic charm. Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

The interior is characterfully designed using reclaimed and antique materials, offering a revitalised version of seaside chic. The host is evidently a fan of up-cycling – look out for creative touches such as repurposed doors, stain-glass windows and rustic radiators. We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. End the day with early-evening sundowners on the front porch, sharing anecdotes and listening to the waves lapping in and out of the shore, before heading into the local village for a spot of traditional pub grub, five minutes away on foot.

While this home is off the beaten track, the surrounding scenery is special for nature lovers. You'll find shops and restaurants in nearby Hawkhurst, plus plenty of National Trust landmarks in the area to pad out your itinerary.

You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Let's start with the design – there's a cow-print sofa that puts the 'moo' in smooth and funky cow-themed artwork adorning the walls. It's not something you see every day – especially not in a seaside village in East Sussex – but that's precisely why we love it. But the fun doesn't end there – a huge collection of DVDs, books and CDs will keep the boredom at bay, there’s a desk for remote working and the compact yet well-equipped kitchen is ideal for rustling up tasty breakfasts to start the day off right. Our favourite spot is the chaise lounge in the bedroom – sprawl out with a glass of wine, a good book and admire the views over St Leonards.

Nestled in a Victorian conversion in the creative quarter, you'll be well-placed for exploring the village on foot. Everything is within walking distance – from the lively cafes and shops on Kings Road (just around the corner) to the sprawling beach (a mere five-minute stroll) and train station (walkable in two minutes). Catch a flick at the independent cinema, grab a bite to eat at the numerous restaurants on the waterfront or wander along the seaside promenade and visit Hastings, a fifteen-minute walk away.

Nearby you can walk the ancient streets of Rye, packed with shops and great places to eat, play golf or walk your dog on the beaches. Even the famous dunes of Camber Sands are within easy reach. Or stay closer to home, tour the neighbouring vineyard, walk to the local farm shop and book yourselves on a 'cellar tour' of this town's medieval undercrofts.

This striking black townhouse in the seaside town of Hastings holds a few secrets inside. First of all, the eclectic living room, set around a big bay window with ingenious half-fold wooden shutters that allow in natural light while keeping a bit of privacy. The wood-burning stove is a cosy bonus for cold nights and the walls are adorned with vibrant modern art. Then there’s the private patio garden with its summer house set up as a creative studio. The outdoors is illuminated with stringed lights at night where a sunken, hand-crafted picnic table and chairs await. Finally, our favourite spot has to be the Japanese onsen style bathroom, with its cascading waterfall sink and a bubble Jacuzzi tub designed specifically for the space. The bathroom is a testament to the rest of the house, where bannisters feel hand-crafted from reclaimed wood and book-filled shelves in the bedrooms are bespoke. Venturing out into Hastings, you’ll find the long sweep of sandy beach is just a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the heart of town, brimming with shops, restaurants and cafés is ten minutes on foot.
