A place to really get away from it all and just each other's company, it's set on a 300-acre working farm, at the end of a long, private drive. And while the house dates back to the 17th century, the later additions offer modern living space – so you get the best of both worlds. Cosy up in front of the inglenook fireplace in the heavily beamed sitting room, enjoy meals in the formal dining room (or spread out into the hall room and bar area if you're planning a bigger celebration) and relax in the bright conservatory. Sure to be a hit with families, the covered pool is just steps away from the house and is heated for much of the year. Elsewhere, there's a sauna, table tennis in the garage barn and table football in the conservatory. The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. An outdoor dining set sits in the dappled shade of an ancient oak tree, with a barbecue ready and waiting for those seemingly endless summer evenings sat outside drinking and dining until well after the sun has set.

After eating your fill, retire to the individually decorated bedrooms on the first floor, where comfy beds and low, pitched ceilings combine to create a cosy vibe that'll have you drifting off in no time.

Fill your days with nature by hiking a section of the High Weald landscape trail, which runs approximately 90 miles from east to west. Alternatively, history buffs will appreciate visiting nearby Herstmonceux Castle, the oldest noteworthy brick building in the country. Finally, Hastings's creative vibe and quirky charm are approximately half an hour's drive away.

The gardens surrounding this one-bedroom bespoke oak barn conversion are beautiful. There are several terraces, including one with a pergola flanked by scented lavenders, perfect for alfresco dining, and another with a hot tub. One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.

Overlooking the beautiful Pevensey Bay Beach – this fabulous home makes for the perfect family seaside getaway. Dine alfresco or relax with a glass of Sussex wine in the swing seat as you take in the sublime views of the beach and sea. Inside, those vistas are just as good from the living space.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). Hidden away in the gardens of a 16th-century manor house, this home in East Sussex was once a stone farm building, but today, you'll find a rather lovely rural escape.

Despite the property's long history, the interior is contemporary in style, with smart Karndean flooring, soothing white walls and furnishings that come from the Scandi school of style. Aside from during the depths of winter, fresh flowers sourced from the flourishing south-facing garden, which can be spotted out of the living room windows, are thoughtfully arranged about the house by the host. 

Head out the back door and you can admire the magnolia tree and plant beds for yourself, or simply sit out on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. From this vantage point, It's possible to see Newick's 11th-century sandstone church — the clock of which is silent, you might be happy to learn.

Elsewhere in the village, there's a cricket pitch, a children's playground, and a woodland walk that comes alive with bluebells in the spring. In the morning, why not check out the local bakery and grab some fresh croissants for breakfast? For lunch, stop by the cafe, and for dinner, choose from three oak-beamed pubs featuring roaring fires and tasty meals, all within easy walking distance.

Although the locale feels like the quintessential English countryside, the city of Brighton only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car whenever you have a hankering for a day at the seaside.

What's not to love about this quirky cottage? Bright and modern, we love how inviting the space feels, with cushy sofas you want to sink into, a sunny deck for alfresco cocktails in the sun and a lime green kitchen fit for rustling up coastal-inspired cuisine. All the furniture here is handmade using reclaimed materials, including a bed made from sea-breakers. And there are plenty more beachy bits and bobs scattered about – from the retro seaside posters in the living room and the beach hut-inspired wardrobes to the buoy mirror in the bathroom. Speaking of, the lush roll-top bath is a dream after a long coastal walk – all that's missing is a bath bomb, a glass of wine and a good book. 

With Normans Bay beach just metres away, chances are you'll spend most of your time by the water or walking along the pebbled shores. The only pub in town is a fifteen-minute walk, but Eastbourne, Pevensey and Bexhill aren't far – the farthest a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to explore more of the Sussex Coast. But we think there's a sleepy charm to Normans Bay that makes it perfect for families wanting a more laid-back getaway.

Yet the characterful medieval town of Lewes is just a ten-minute drive away and a little further, Brighton (twenty-minute drive) for a walk by the sea and shopping in its Lanes. But it’s right here at home where we think you’ll be spending most of your time. From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. After bracing walks in the surrounding hills, kick off your muddy shoes in the boot room and sink into the sumptuous sofas to soak up those awe-inspiring views with freshly brewed coffee. Feathered by cosy cushions and the softest sheepskin, it's highly likely you may never want to leave.

This charming country house can be found on the village green of pretty Alfriston. It’s at the heart of the village, with views of the parish church – known as the Cathedral of the South Downs – and the National Trust property next door. There’s a hotel next door managed by the owners of the cottage – the hotel serves delicious food throughout the day, which comes in very handy after long hikes. 

The cottage has everything you might hope for from a break to the country. The living room is cosy and comfortable, with a fireplace to keep you warm when the weather turns colder. A huge bay window looks out over the village green so you can drink in the view as you sip your morning cuppa. 

The area is excellent for hikers, with Alfriston located at the eastern end of the South Downs Way. There are trails suitable for every length of walk, whether you want to amble around the countryside or hike all the way to Eastbourne. 

Eastbourne Beach is twenty-four minutes away, with its marvellous pier. Spend a day at the beach or pop there for fish and chips after admiring the views from Birling Gap.

The cottage is perfectly situated for a country break. Whether you want to spend your time enjoying the Great Outdoors or prefer to soak up the village atmosphere from the pub, you’ll love staying here.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.
