This clifftop cottage in the Hastings Country Park lived a former life as one of the original coastguard terraced cottages. Tucked away at the foot of a country lane, this cottage sits cosy on the coastline. Its views go on for miles, with sighs of Dover, Beachy Head and even France from the top floor (with good weather!). Staying here is about nights around one of the two fireplaces, and relaxing with a book and glass of wine in the conservatory or in the bath. Exploration is on your doorstep in the surroundings of the Hastings Country Park, where ponies frolic and the wilderness goes on for miles. Further afield, central Hastings is a fifteen-minute drive for those nights when you just need to hang your apron and go out for dinner.

This striking black townhouse in the seaside town of Hastings holds a few secrets inside. First of all, the eclectic living room, set around a big bay window with ingenious half-fold wooden shutters that allow in natural light while keeping a bit of privacy. The wood-burning stove is a cosy bonus for cold nights and the walls are adorned with vibrant modern art. Then there’s the private patio garden with its summer house set up as a creative studio. The outdoors is illuminated with stringed lights at night where a sunken, hand-crafted picnic table and chairs await. Finally, our favourite spot has to be the Japanese onsen style bathroom, with its cascading waterfall sink and a bubble Jacuzzi tub designed specifically for the space. The bathroom is a testament to the rest of the house, where bannisters feel hand-crafted from reclaimed wood and book-filled shelves in the bedrooms are bespoke. Venturing out into Hastings, you’ll find the long sweep of sandy beach is just a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the heart of town, brimming with shops, restaurants and cafés is ten minutes on foot.

We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. There's even a 30-acre family-run vineyard owned that guests have the opportunity to discover on a wine tour and tasting organised by the hosts. Make the most of the on-site wine tasting lounge – it's the perfect place to socialise after a day out in the country air. 

As well as communal access to the winery, you'll have private access to an entire wing of the home as well as a private piece of the garden – separate from any other guests. Stone paths pave the way inside to the cosy main living space with a traditional aesthetic throughout. While there isn't a kitchen as such in the wing, the living area includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and some dining essentials so that you can enjoy simple meals around the table. After country walks through the sheep fields or to Winchelsea Beach (fifty minutes away on foot) – make returning and snuggling up in front of the log burner fire a cosy ritual that you'll crave long after your stay. As refined and attractive a home as you're likely to see, this single-storey apartment is a wing of a Grade II Gothic mansion. But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. It's just few minutes walk to the nearby pub, farm shop and to the quiet beach at Winchelsea, while the medieval town of Rye – packed with shops and restaurants – is just a seven-minute drive. For more things to do, head to the nature reserve and pebble beach at Rye Harbour, drive to the famous dunes of nearby Camber Sands or take part in one of Winchelsea's 'cellar tours' looking at the ancient undercrofts of the town's oldest buildings. There's even a neighbouring vineyard where you can tour, taste and maybe pick up a few bottles for your stay.

We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

We love the bright living room with its large windows that provide the most spectacular sunset views across the Winter Gardens and out towards the sea, best enjoyed on the sofa with a glass of wine or through the handy telescope provided. Full of fun decorative details that subtly nod to the coast, this space is made for relaxation and easy-going socialising. Our other favourite spot for sea-sighting is in the beautiful master bedroom where an armchair invites you to curl up on it with a good book and enjoy the rolling of the waves from yet another angle. Factor in the sunny kitchen and the sparkling blue and white bathroom and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful coastal break. Outside of your home, you’re just a six-minute walk from the Turner Contemporary art gallery, an eight-minute stroll from the Main Sands beach, while the Dreamland Margate amusement park is fifteen minutes on foot from your door.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.
