After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

A place to really get away from it all and just each other's company, it's set on a 300-acre working farm, at the end of a long, private drive. And while the house dates back to the 17th century, the later additions offer modern living space – so you get the best of both worlds. Cosy up in front of the inglenook fireplace in the heavily beamed sitting room, enjoy meals in the formal dining room (or spread out into the hall room and bar area if you're planning a bigger celebration) and relax in the bright conservatory. Sure to be a hit with families, the covered pool is just steps away from the house and is heated for much of the year. Elsewhere, there's a sauna, table tennis in the garage barn and table football in the conservatory. Set up with family rooms for groups, the home's first floor has a galleried landing and lovely views across the gardens and beyond – all the way to the South Downs. What's not to love about this quirky cottage? Bright and modern, we love how inviting the space feels, with cushy sofas you want to sink into, a sunny deck for alfresco cocktails in the sun and a lime green kitchen fit for rustling up coastal-inspired cuisine. All the furniture here is handmade using reclaimed materials, including a bed made from sea-breakers. And there are plenty more beachy bits and bobs scattered about – from the retro seaside posters in the living room and the beach hut-inspired wardrobes to the buoy mirror in the bathroom. Speaking of, the lush roll-top bath is a dream after a long coastal walk – all that's missing is a bath bomb, a glass of wine and a good book. 

With Normans Bay beach just metres away, chances are you'll spend most of your time by the water or walking along the pebbled shores. The only pub in town is a fifteen-minute walk, but Eastbourne, Pevensey and Bexhill aren't far – the farthest a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to explore more of the Sussex Coast. But we think there's a sleepy charm to Normans Bay that makes it perfect for families wanting a more laid-back getaway.

The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm.

In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. And children will love the sunken trampoline.

Inside, elegant styling, country furnishings and eclectic artwork blend to create a lived-in, warm feeling. A beautiful living room and snug both feature working fireplaces and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped when it comes to cooking for a large group (yes, there really are two dishwashers). You can even cook alfresco meals down at the pool house. But its most impressive room has to be the orangery, where a long dining table is the star of the show, against a backdrop of vast windows and doors with spectacular views.

Perfect for special gatherings, and with a new yoga studio, it's also a flexible space with an additional cottage and a garden studio that can be rented alongside it. And when you're not entertaining, the village, with its tea shop and pretty church, is just a stroll through the fields – one of the most scenic villages in England, you may recognise it as one of the locations where the movie The Holiday was filmed.

The interior is characterfully designed using reclaimed and antique materials, offering a revitalised version of seaside chic. The host is evidently a fan of up-cycling – look out for creative touches such as repurposed doors, stain-glass windows and rustic radiators. We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. End the day with early-evening sundowners on the front porch, sharing anecdotes and listening to the waves lapping in and out of the shore, before heading into the local village for a spot of traditional pub grub, five minutes away on foot.
