But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. But it also boasts some tasteful modern touches, like the emperor-size bed with a cashmere and wool mattress and 800 thread count linen in the master bedroom, the stylish marble bathrooms, the cosy double bed and built-in bunkbed in the second bedroom. Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. There's even a 30-acre family-run vineyard owned that guests have the opportunity to discover on a wine tour and tasting organised by the hosts. Make the most of the on-site wine tasting lounge – it's the perfect place to socialise after a day out in the country air. 

As well as communal access to the winery, you'll have private access to an entire wing of the home as well as a private piece of the garden – separate from any other guests. Stone paths pave the way inside to the cosy main living space with a traditional aesthetic throughout. While there isn't a kitchen as such in the wing, the living area includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and some dining essentials so that you can enjoy simple meals around the table. For more things to do, head to the nature reserve and pebble beach at Rye Harbour, drive to the famous dunes of nearby Camber Sands or take part in one of Winchelsea's 'cellar tours' looking at the ancient undercrofts of the town's oldest buildings. There's even a neighbouring vineyard where you can tour, taste and maybe pick up a few bottles for your stay.

We love the upstairs apartment's long balcony, where double doors open it up to the living room and both bedrooms, and we're big fans of the super stylish bathrooms.

We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. Spread over three buildings, this converted farm dates back to the 17th century and maintains plenty of historic charm. Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

Positioned directly on Dungeness's public beach, this former foghorn testing station has been fully renovated into a unique getaway for two. The nearby lighthouse's foghorn still works, although we much prefer the idea of waking up to the sound of the waves and seagulls. The sea is literally on your doorstep, and huge glass doors and a small terrace maximise the idyllic views. It's more of a studio than a one-bed, but we like the single-level layout. Although phone signal is patchy here and there's no proper TV, there is wi-fi for remote working and streaming. That said, the Bose speaker system, wood burner and teak bathtub are all you need to truly unwind. 

The Fog Signalling Building 

Set at the foot of the Dungeness roundhouse, this former lighthouse keeper’s cottage makes for the ultimate escape from the city. There are unspoilt views of the rugged landscape, and several nearby coastal paths to explore on foot, with plenty of local pubs en-route. Spend sunny days on the terrace embracing the peace, while the cooler months can be equally enjoyable keeping cosy in the cottage with the two wood burners. Only a ten-minute drive from Rye, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and boutiques for when you’re craving a bit of hustle and bustle.
