Set amongst a Medieval farmstead, this gorgeous barn conversion in the heart of the Sussex Weald is the perfect escape. Relax on your private, south-facing terrace, spot the local wildlife, or enjoy an alfresco lunch.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

Once the old tuck shop for the converted school next door, this comfortable cottage provides the perfect woodland escape for a couple or solo traveller looking for a relaxing, nature-filled stay. Located on the outskirts of the village of Fairwarp and hugging the edge of Ashdown Forest, there’s a serene tranquillity to this home that’s felt the moment you step inside. Tall vaulted ceilings, modern beams and wood floors set the scene in the main living space with skylights letting plenty of sunlight pour through. Whether you’re kicking back on the sofa with a good book or cooking up a feast in the open, modern kitchen, you’ll feel at ease in this bright, welcoming space. With a private decked terrace off of the living room too, you can enjoy sunny alfresco breakfasts and starlit drinks while taking in the peaceful quiet of your rural setting. We particularly love the gate at the back of the house, which leads directly into Ashdown Forest for day-long rambles in its heath and wooded expanse and plenty of opportunities to see the real-life setting of Winnie-the-Pooh. When you’re not hanging out in your country cottage or exploring the surrounding nature, drive into Fairwarp (four minutes away) for a hearty pub lunch. Alternatively, hop in your car to visit bustling Brighton with its famous beach and pier, forty minutes from your door.

The gardens surrounding this one-bedroom bespoke oak barn conversion are beautiful. There are several terraces, including one with a pergola flanked by scented lavenders, perfect for alfresco dining, and another with a hot tub. One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.

This stylish and cosy cabin-style property, elevated on stilts, has a tree-house vibe (you'll need to love wood though). Winding your way up the country lane leading to this home, you could feel a world away from everything. Yet the characterful medieval town of Lewes is just a ten-minute drive away and a little further, Brighton (twenty-minute drive) for a walk by the sea and shopping in its Lanes. But it’s right here at home where we think you’ll be spending most of your time. From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. After bracing walks in the surrounding hills, kick off your muddy shoes in the boot room and sink into the sumptuous sofas to soak up those awe-inspiring views with freshly brewed coffee. Feathered by cosy cushions and the softest sheepskin, it's highly likely you may never want to leave.

Hidden away in the gardens of a 16th-century manor house, this home in East Sussex was once a stone farm building, but today, you'll find a rather lovely rural escape.

Despite the property's long history, the interior is contemporary in style, with smart Karndean flooring, soothing white walls and furnishings that come from the Scandi school of style. Aside from during the depths of winter, fresh flowers sourced from the flourishing south-facing garden, which can be spotted out of the living room windows, are thoughtfully arranged about the house by the host. 

Head out the back door and you can admire the magnolia tree and plant beds for yourself, or simply sit out on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. From this vantage point, It's possible to see Newick's 11th-century sandstone church — the clock of which is silent, you might be happy to learn.

Elsewhere in the village, there's a cricket pitch, a children's playground, and a woodland walk that comes alive with bluebells in the spring. In the morning, why not check out the local bakery and grab some fresh croissants for breakfast? For lunch, stop by the cafe, and for dinner, choose from three oak-beamed pubs featuring roaring fires and tasty meals, all within easy walking distance.

Although the locale feels like the quintessential English countryside, the city of Brighton only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car whenever you have a hankering for a day at the seaside.

Village Life

This pretty holiday home sits in the centre of Westmeston, a village at the foot of the South Downs. It’s a great spot for walkers as the footpath directly outside leads straight to the Downs, and there are plenty of other local walks to enjoy. Beach-lovers need only drive thirty minutes to reach the south coast. The house itself retains much of its Victorian charm, having been lovingly restored. We love the garden and the cosy wood burner for chillier evenings.

This cosy shepherd’s hut invites you to slow down and embrace life’s simple pleasures. Set within the magical landscape of the Sussex Weald, you can listen to the sweet sounds of nature while relaxing by the outdoor fire pit. There’s also an indoor wood burning stove for snug evenings and all the essentials you could need to settle in and unwind. And when it comes to explorations further afield, it’s just a ten-minute walk to the local village where you’ll find a shop and a pub. It also provides easy access to hiking trails through the South Downs National Park and Ashdown Forest.

In the peaceful village of Westmeston, this home is spread across a semi-detached cottage as well as a single-story studio space. In the main cottage, you'll find a larger space with a dining area, kitchen and living room for all guests to come together. Meanwhile, the studio features another open living space with its own independent amenities. The two garden areas are each equipped with outdoor seating and hot tubs. However, with underfloor heating across the home, it is equally as inviting here during the colder months. Plus, you'll be just steps away from footpaths leading directly to The South Downs National Park and two local pubs.

Stay near the enchanted Ashdown Forest (fictional home of Winnie the Pooh) when you check in to this cosy house. Great for a family break or group getaway, there’s lots of space to make yourself comfortable (although if ten of you are staying, two will sleep on a sofa bed). The kitchen has everything you need to cater for a crowd, but with village pubs serving food nearby, you can easily take a break from cooking. Handily, this home is half an hour from London Gatwick Airport too, making it a convenient place to stay before or after a flight. And with National Trust homes and even the coast within day trip distance, this is a great base for seeing more of the South of England.

Situated on the southern edge of one of England's most picturesque landscapes, dotted with medieval manor houses, family-owned farms and ancient woodlands, this charming two-bedroom home offers a tempting rural retreat for a family or small group of friends.

The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. An outdoor dining set sits in the dappled shade of an ancient oak tree, with a barbecue ready and waiting for those seemingly endless summer evenings sat outside drinking and dining until well after the sun has set.

After eating your fill, retire to the individually decorated bedrooms on the first floor, where comfy beds and low, pitched ceilings combine to create a cosy vibe that'll have you drifting off in no time.

Fill your days with nature by hiking a section of the High Weald landscape trail, which runs approximately 90 miles from east to west. Alternatively, history buffs will appreciate visiting nearby Herstmonceux Castle, the oldest noteworthy brick building in the country. Finally, Hastings's creative vibe and quirky charm are approximately half an hour's drive away.

This barn conversion is just the right size for a rural getaway – and just a short drive from Lewes and Brighton. The first thing you'll notice is the original oak beams, which are now a prominent feature in the double-height living space. It's hard to resist a spiral staircase, and this one leads to a cosy twin bedroom, but we'd recommend the ground-floor bedroom if you prefer more privacy. The patio is the perfect place for a morning coffee or evening drinks – you probably won't be here the rest of the day, not with bustling Brighton and the tranquil South Downs on your doorstep.

Since this Grade II listed mansion was nearly destroyed by a fire, it’s been thoughtfully remodelled. It now blends eclectic contemporary design with historic charm, resulting in a beautiful, one-of-a-kind home. It sits on the banks of the River Cuckmere on the edge of Alfriston, with a backdrop of the South Downs National Park. The views can be admired from the grand balcony, the upper dining terrace, and the cypress and olive tree-filled garden. This home has everything you could wish for, including a cellar bar, a hot tub, and a yoga and pilates gym with a sauna. At full occupancy, guests nine and ten will sleep on a daybed in the library – a maximum of eight guests might be more comfortable.

Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). Or stay local in Seaford to mooch about its galleries and shops. Just be sure to make it home for dusk – the sunset views are spell bounding.

The kitchen is the heart of the home, with plenty of space to gather and views over the garden. Spend evenings outside by the firepit or watching the sunset from the lawn. The views are breathtaking, the vibe is peaceful, and nature is all around. You'll want a car for ease, and at full capacity, extra mattresses will need to be set up on bedroom floors. However, with such spacious rooms and total serenity, it’s well worth it.

Overlooking the beautiful Pevensey Bay Beach – this fabulous home makes for the perfect family seaside getaway. Dine alfresco or relax with a glass of Sussex wine in the swing seat as you take in the sublime views of the beach and sea. Inside, those vistas are just as good from the living space.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

However, if you prefer to use your breaks as a chance to disconnect, the national park on your doorstep offers over 2,000 miles of rights of way so you can enjoy some quiet reflection as you hike through the hills.

The terrace, complete with a fire pit, is perfect for alfresco dining as the little ones play on the grass – it overlooks the Kent countryside, too. The village of Cowden is a short drive away, as is Tunbridge Wells, Penshurst Place, and Hever Castle. London Bridge is less than an hour by train, too – ideal for day trips to the capital.

Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. The Lighthousekeeper's Daughter

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.
