If you’re in search of an easygoing Cotswolds getaway, this home makes a great option. You’ll find it’s just a short drive or bus ride into the heart of Gloucester city centre, while Cheltenham is also within easy reach. There is a large private garden and the open-plan living room and kitchen lends itself perfectly to social gatherings. It’s worth noting this home isn’t suitable for infants or children, but we think it makes a great spot for a refreshing adults-only escape.

One look at the rolling Painswick Valley views on the horizon from the outdoor seating area, and you'll understand why this cottage made it into our English collection. Tranquil, because of its secluded spot, the house boasts traditional wooden beams, a farmhouse kitchen and a wood-burning stove and pairs it with modern elements. If the large garden doesn't keep the little ones entertained – unlikely – there's also a games room with table football, but they might need help up and down the steep stone staircase to get there. Location-wise, you're near Stroud's renowned Farmer's Market, while Cheltenham is just a 20-minute drive away.

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

This barn conversion is situated on a small working dairy farm in Painswick Valley, less than a twenty-minute drive from Gloucester. Four fishing lakes are within the wider grounds, so keen anglers should bring their rods. If you’d prefer to stay put, there is a courtyard with outside seating for relaxing with a cup of tea. Inside, the wood-burning stove is a welcome addition in the cooler months and flexible sleeping in the fourth bedroom makes this place ideal for any family or group of friends staying together.

The cottage is nestled in a quiet street in Painswick, a traditional, incredibly pretty Cotswolds village. You are within eight minutes walk of a handful of excellent country pubs, as well as shops and local amenities. The Painswick Rococo garden is a stunning, peaceful place to wander around, complete with a maze, blooming flowers and 18th century architecture, and can be reached in seventeen minutes on foot. There is also a market every Thursday morning in the village, where you can buy food and local wares.

Exploring the surrounding countryside is easy from here, whether you're planning to travel on foot, by car, on a bike or even by horseback – that's right, for an additional fee, you can rent a neighbouring stable for your steed. Cheltenham Racecourse is just six miles away, while the charming towns of Bourton-on-the-Water and Bibury are both less than a twenty-mile drive from your front door.

Just six miles south of pretty Cheltenham and set right in the heart of the Cotswold Way, when it comes to wonderful walking routes and picture–perfect scenery, you’d struggle to find anywhere more ideal.

Outside, there’s three quarters of an acre of land across three gardens, offering plenty of space to enjoy the sunshine during the warmer months. Oh, and did we mention that there’s a private pool and hot tub, too? When temperatures soar, pop on your favourite swimwear and dive into its cooling depths for an instant refresh from the scorching sunshine.

For those visiting during autumn and winter, the pool might be off–limits, but there’s still plenty to be enjoyed. With beautiful beamed ceilings, oak floors and sumptuous soft furnishings peppered from room to room, wherever you choose to unwind, you’re sure to feel snug as a bug. For us, it’s the large open fireplace that really sets the scene. We can see it now – all cosied up in our best pyjamas with a hot mug of cocoa and a good book…perfection!

We’re sure you’ll be in no rush to dash out, but with lots to see and do right on your doorstep, a little venture into the open air is sure to do you good. Fancy a bite to eat? Head to The Royal George Hotel, Birdlip, just 1.5 miles away. Or perhaps it’s some shorter, family–friendly walks you’re hoping for? If so, make a beeline for Crickley Hill Country Park, just four miles away.

Deep in the heart of the Cotswolds, we found this idyllic home to be an ideal setting for a romantic escape. Both Glouster and Cheltenham are a short drive away, but beautiful nature, picturesque villages, and country pubs accessible via cross-country walks are the main draw here. As it's an annex, you won't be completely secluded outside, but the home is yours alone and has a private entrance. While there are plenty of welcome authentic touches – especially the wooden lintels and exposed brickwork – the sloping ceiling in the bedroom might inconvenience taller guests.

The home is located just off of the Cotswold Way, and it's an ideal home base for keen walkers and hikers. If you'd rather do some sightseeing, the sixteenth-century Rococo Garden is just a short walk away and is sure to delight the whole family.

Through the French doors from the outdoor space, you’ll find the well-equipped kitchen-diner – there’s plenty of room here for your group to cook and chat. The city of Gloucester is 3 miles away and is known for its docks and 11th-century cathedral, while 10 miles away is the town of Cheltenham.

The honey-coloured stone buildings, wisteria-adorned doorways and misty green hills of pretty Painswick couldn't get more Hollywood movie set if it tried. In fact, this town is so disarmingly attractive that it's known as the Queen of the Cotswolds. Well, adjust your crown because we've got a very princely stay right here for you. This 16th-century cottage is in the heart of the town, opposite the legendary 99 Yew Trees Church with its magnificent yew trees – can you take a wild guess how many?

Once inside you'll feel like a modern-day Henry VII thanks to exposed stonework, regal purple sofas, aged wooden beams and hefty wooden beds. In the second living room you'll find an honesty bar where your host has thoughtfully provided a selection of spirits – all donations made by you for the drinks you make are given to Emmaus, a local homelessness charity.

Outside you'll find the very private, very sunny courtyard garden is a delight, with lush, mature trees and immaculately manicured shrubs creating that Hampton Court Palace garden feel - albeit on a much smaller scale. It's a right royal escape.

Treat yourself to a long soak after a day of exploring  – a glass of bubbly in hand – and relish the quiet of your garden-facing locale. Speaking of sightseeing, you’ve got a plethora of restaurants, shops and wine bars on your front step, while Montpellier Gardens is an eight-minute stroll away. Pittville Park is also walkable in twenty minutes, the Promenade is six minutes away on foot and the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse is a nine-minute drive from your door.

Rather aptly for an apartment on a street called Queen's Circus, this home is really rather regal. Some of that is down to the tall ceilings, period features and tall sash windows looking out over Imperial Gardens, but it's all the little design touches, too — the chandeliers and oversized, ornate mirror frames add a touch of class in the living space and bedrooms, while the rainfall shower and elegant free-standing tub bring spa-level amenities to the bathrooms. The kitchen is both large and dazzlingly white, perfect for any culinary experimentation you have in mind. Part of a country estate on top of a hill in the peaceful village of Forthampton, there are plenty of walking and biking opportunities. As pretty as a picture and filled with subtle hints of rustic charm while still maintaining its modern appeal, there’s a lot to love about it. With wooden beams adding a dash of country charm and private gardens blooming with wild magnolia in grounds that house an adjoining manor, this is the type of place where you’ll cosy up by the fire with some hot cocoa after a day of enjoying woodland walks and cobblestone towns.

While the bedrooms don’t boast tons of space, the cosy living room and extra reception area provide enough room for your group to sprawl out and unwind while dinner's being prepared in the big kitchen. But for us, this home is all about its prime location. Just a short walk from Cheltenham's historic city centre, if you don’t feel like cooking, there’s a whole host of restaurants to enjoy. And for ventures further into the Cotswolds, you'll find free on-street parking nearby.

In the heart of the South Cotswolds, this Grade II listed cottage opens its doors to a cosy retreat. There’s a wood-burning stove in the living room and you’ll have access to an enclosed courtyard with seating for your morning coffee or evening drinks. Parking is available here, but you won't need a car as it’s just a short stroll into the centre of Stroud where you’ll find a great selection of restaurants, pubs and shops. It’s also just a short walk to the Cotswold Way and Rodborough Common. 

Feeling Joy 

Second Nature is the best of both worlds. Found on the edge of Cheltenham, it’s only a short drive from the city, while still feeling incredibly idyllic and rural because of its immediate surroundings. Ideally placed for countryside walks, the Cotswold Way passes right behind the home, along with several other walking paths. We loved the attention to detail – the handmade, one-of-a-kind four-poster bed is truly something else. And let’s not forget about the views… We particularly enjoyed gazing at the green fields from the living room window.
