With the preponderance of wood in the walls and furnishings, as well as the chalet-style kitchen and warm lighting throughout, there's a distinct Americana style to this recently converted home. However, it's actually to be found right on England's south coast and the seaside at the village of Milford-On-Sea can be reached in just five minutes in the car. Despite this proximity to the coast, the cabin is more rural in feel. For a start, it's located down a quiet country lane and there's a large garden surrounding complete with fruit trees — which guests are welcome to pick at the right time of year. Out among this manicured outside space, there's also a barbecue and a fire pit that will see you through long summer evenings. When you want to more of the charming locale, there's a pair of bicycles that guests are free to borrow. Hurst Castle takes just over twenty-five minutes to reach if you're feeling like a bit of a challenge and there are plenty of nearby pubs to reward yourselves with well-earned liquid refreshment.

Shingle Beach

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss.

This is elegant, country living at its very best. Set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, this charming cottage is just a five-minute drive from the pretty village of Burley with its quirky shops, pubs, and tea houses and a twenty-minute drive to the coast. Inside this home, a wash of soothing sage and neutral tones blends with slate flooring and quality furniture to create a house full of character and style. Fully kitted out with families in mind, the hosts have thought of every last detail. There's a playroom brimming with toys and books to keep the kids amused, and they'll love the bunk beds upstairs in the light-filled bedrooms. For the adults, a slipper bath is waiting to unwind in, and there's a wood-burning fire for curling up beside in the evenings. The welcome basket is impressive, too – with a cheeky bottle of wine ready to enjoy once little ones are tucked up in bed. Outside at the bottom of the charming garden, there's a gate leading you into the woods with a babbling brook for splashing about with fishing nets. You may even spot wild ponies trotting by. In a former farmhouse, complete with a rustic stone exterior and original timber beams inside, this apartment mixes traditional elements with modern flair and well-thought-out facilities. Families will love the playground – with swings and a trampoline – as well as the board game collection for rainy days. While the kids keep busy, you can relax in the vast lounge on a plush sofa, with a warm Earl Grey in hand. And with French doors in the master bedroom, you can open up the curtains to the lush lawn on a sunny morning, or make the most of stargazing opportunities at night. Feel free to pour a tumbler of whisky after the kids have gone to bed.

It has large sitting room and dining area, perfect for parties of family and friends to spend time together over lively brunches and long, indulgent dinners. Outside you'll find a lush garden with green lawns for picnicking and a terrace where you can unwind in the tranquil Hampshire countryside. If you're visiting during the summer months, a yurt is available to fit in even more guests. The peaceful Beaulieu River is right on your doorstep, where you can do some wild swimming or even take a boat taxi downstream. If you find yourself wanting some more action, you can hike, cycle or even kayak through the national park, before stopping off at one of the traditional local pubs for some hearty local fare.

It’s worth noting the decor and furnishings are a little dated, but you will find plenty of space to stretch out and socialise.

In a huge old farmhouse-style building, your quarters have tons of countryside character. That said, every modern convenience is available, although some have a vintage edge like the red Smeg fridge. Leisure certainly hasn’t been forgotten about either, with board games and an outdoor play area to keep the whole family entertained. While the little ones romp in the garden, relax on the patio with a pot of tea. And when dinnertime strikes, you can light up the barbecue to dine alfresco on a balmy summer evening. As the home is located in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (one of only forty-six such spots in the UK), the prized landscape is exceptional for walking, fossil hunting, and windsurfing. But if you do fancy something a little more urban, the island’s main town of Cowes is just a twenty-five-minute drive.

This pretty farm building conversion offers all the independence of a private cottage with its own garden, with the added bonus of communal grounds where children can run free. Ideal for families, it's part of a small complex of similar homes just a five-minute walk from the nearest beach. Comfortable and smart, the single-storey cottage shows off its heritage with a stable door, high ceilings, oak beams and skylights, while the open-plan living space is perfect for keeping an eye on the kids as you whip up meals in the country kitchen. Bedrooms are cosy and relaxing, and we love the double doors that open out into the garden from the master bedroom. Outside, make use of the barbecue in your enclosed garden, or take the kids to the communal play area. With a fort, swings and a sunken trampoline, it's bound to be a hit. Walk to some of the area's best beaches from your doorstep, stroll to the local pub and head off on all sorts of adventures around the island by car.

Set within the Isle of Wight’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are only forty-six such awarded regions across the entire country – this retreat is truly located in the landscape of dreams. Five minutes on foot from the rugged Brook coastal path and its picturesque beach, you’ll love coming home to this cosy, cottage-like apartment after a windswept day by the shores. In a rustic, stone farmhouse, this home has a wonderfully rural character from the offset. With original features of the building standing strong, such as chunky timber ceiling beams, wooden floors, and barn-style doors, we love the traditional feel of the home. The soft furnishings make the living space warm and inviting, with natural light streaming in through skylights. Your host has also made sure that you can keep the whole family entertained – the playground outside has a slide and trampoline for the kids, as well as table tennis (which might end up being an activity for ‘big kids’ too). Light up the barbecue and sit out on the patio for a grill and a glass of wine, before a night of stargazing.

Five minutes from the city centre, ten minutes from Ocean Village and a couple of minutes from Oxford Street, this modern apartment is in the middle of all the must-see areas. Head in any direction and you'll probably stumble across the vibrant areas of the city in a few minutes. 

For a day of shopping, Oxford Street is the first place on your itinerary. It's lined with all the notable high-street stores and nearby to a huge shopping centre filled with on-trend stores and eating spots. You can spend a whole day perusing the aisles for cool clothing. 

If you prefer to take the day at a leisurely pace, head to the welcoming ambiance of Ocean Village. The marina is shaped by vibrant bars and restaurants offering alfresco dining near the water. Sharing delicious food and drink in the warm evenings by the marina is one of the highlights of the city.

However you spend your days, the apartment is made for putting your feet up and relaxing. A large TV shows your favourite films and TV series, whilst the glass dining table is made for sharing meals. For a treat, sit on the balcony with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the peace and privacy.

Located in the heart of Southampton – just a three-minute walk to Oxford Street, which is home to several great eateries for meals out – this apartment is a great base for city living. After breakfast here, catch up on important work at the home’s desk space before you head out for the day.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the water of the harbour and admire the boats in Ocean Village – just a short ten-minute walk from your door. Or, indulge in a shopping spree at West Quay shopping centre – reachable in twelve minutes on foot. 

What’s more, the Red Funnel Ferries that will take you to the Isle of Wight for the day are just a fourteen-minute walk or four-minute drive from this home, and if you find yourself inspired, the apartment’s desk space is the perfect spot to begin a novel set on the island. Then, after a fantastic meal out or a home-cooked dinner, we would love to head up to the shared roof terrace on the sixth floor at sunset to admire the stunning views of the cityscape.

It's a seven-minute walk to Brook Beach if you want to take in the sea air, and the surrounding hills and valleys are filled with walking trails. Views from the farmhouse take in the patchwork of fields around you. On the outside, it's typically 19th-century with a stone facade and pitch-roofed doorway. We were taken aback at how modern it is inside, with soothing sofas in stone grey and sleek Scandi-wood floors. The custom-designed kitchen is a haven for cooking with beautiful granite-topped counters, a big range cooker and a Belfast sink. Breakfast is a sunny affair in the dining room with its curved bay of windows. From here, you can head out the French doors to the private patio, where a picnic bench provides a spot for a morning cup of tea and a built-in brick barbecue means summer dining outdoors. Or, head to the communal gardens and let the kids play in the fort, swings, slide and trampoline.

Neighbouring a secluded nature reserve and woodland, this 1925 railway cottage is the ideal spot for a cosy coastal retreat with the family. The kitchen is rather more rustic in appearance, with exposed brickwork working nicely alongside the skylight constructed out of the sail from a boat — a thoughtful nod to the region's nautical culture. Step out of the French doors and you'll find yourself in the home's garden, which comes with tidy plant rows, an alfresco seating area and a hot tub for those warm summer evenings — or even those chilly winter ones if you're feeling hardy. The home's location in the seaside village of Hamble-le-Rice presents a plethora of distractions to keep your guests entertained. It's possible to see the Hamble River rolling on by from the kitchen and bedrooms windows, and if it gives you the inspiration to see it up close, it only takes two minutes to walk to the historic waterfront with its quay and marinas. The port city of Southampton is only a twenty-minute drive away, too.

Where do we start with this home – both the apartment and the location are excellent. Firstly, it’s just a 50-metre stroll across West Cliff Green to the beach steps making this the perfect base for a family-friendly holiday by the sea. There are an array of restaurants and bars within walking distance whilst Bournemouth Pier and the town centre are also accessible by foot. We love the sea views from this place’s private garden and who wouldn’t want to dine or relax in the light-filled conservatory? If you’re a group of eight, then two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living space, but it’s a spacious room. What a great find this is.

Dorset Paradise

Situated on England's sunny south coast — well, relatively speaking — this home has plenty of ways for you to enjoy a summer's day. The terrace out through the French doors has a glorious view of the River Hamble where you can enjoy paddleboarding, sailing, riverside walks or use as a base for sailing regattas. You can even arrive by boat and moor at the Elephant Boatyard opposite the house. Elsewhere in the large garden, there's a wooden summerhouse with a log burner that brings a touch of apres-ski glamour to this corner of Hampshire, great for cosy sundowners in the winter and family barbecues in summer.

Inside, the preference for wooden interiors continues in the main house, especially in the open-concept living space with its parquet flooring, roof beams and rustic dining table next to a set of tall windows. As well as a huge corner kitchen complete with a sociable island, there are two reception rooms, one with another wood burner for those autumnal evenings.

In the local area, you'll find it easy to enjoy the great outdoors. The River Hamble Country Park is only ten minutes' drive away and is good for a rural walk finished off with a hot chocolate. You're also opposite the Jolly Sailor pub which has roaring log fires in the winter and a great menu for outdoor dining. The centre of Southampton takes just over twenty minutes in the car whenever you fancy a change of pace.

Spend your days on the beach or explore the vibrant city of Portsmouth with its fantastic outlet shopping at Gunwharf Quays – reachable in less than ten minutes by car. Get far away from the madding crowd in Thomas Hardy’s Dorset with this beautiful home – it’s the perfect romantic retreat. Surrounded by woodland, relax in the hot tub with a glass of fizz (or whip up a smoothie with the blender in the kitchen), and when the sun sets, cosy up by the fire pit. There’s a hammock to unwind in as well. 

The sylvan setting can be admired through the French doors in the living room, too – keep your eyes peeled for visiting wildlife. Out and about, the market town of Blandford Forum, with its array of eateries, is a six-minute drive. Alternatively, the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy, a country house and estate near Wimborne Minster, is eight minutes in the car, while Thomas Hardy's Cottage is twenty-three minutes. Further afield, Sandbanks, with its award-winning beach and chic boutiques, is just over a thirty-five-minute ride, so there’s plenty to keep you busy here.

Simply step outside of your home and find yourself in front of the glittering south coast, breathing in the fresh sea air. It doesn’t get much more coastal than this. Here, you can start your days with invigorating walks along the beach, take early swims, or simply spend time by yourself on the pebbles.

Inside, you’ll find a warm and homely interior that’s been thoughtfully designed for you to feel at ease. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun.
