This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay. 

Bread & Butter

This old farmhouse was built in 1820 and sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Wight. It's a seven-minute walk to Brook Beach if you want to take in the sea air, and the surrounding hills and valleys are filled with walking trails. Views from the farmhouse take in the patchwork of fields around you. On the outside, it's typically 19th-century with a stone facade and pitch-roofed doorway. We were taken aback at how modern it is inside, with soothing sofas in stone grey and sleek Scandi-wood floors. The custom-designed kitchen is a haven for cooking with beautiful granite-topped counters, a big range cooker and a Belfast sink. Breakfast is a sunny affair in the dining room with its curved bay of windows. From here, you can head out the French doors to the private patio, where a picnic bench provides a spot for a morning cup of tea and a built-in brick barbecue means summer dining outdoors. Or, head to the communal gardens and let the kids play in the fort, swings, slide and trampoline.

Farmhouse

Set within the Isle of Wight’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are only forty-six such awarded regions across the entire country – this retreat is truly located in the landscape of dreams. Five minutes on foot from the rugged Brook coastal path and its picturesque beach, you’ll love coming home to this cosy, cottage-like apartment after a windswept day by the shores. In a rustic, stone farmhouse, this home has a wonderfully rural character from the offset. With original features of the building standing strong, such as chunky timber ceiling beams, wooden floors, and barn-style doors, we love the traditional feel of the home. The soft furnishings make the living space warm and inviting, with natural light streaming in through skylights. Your host has also made sure that you can keep the whole family entertained – the playground outside has a slide and trampoline for the kids, as well as table tennis (which might end up being an activity for ‘big kids’ too). Light up the barbecue and sit out on the patio for a grill and a glass of wine, before a night of stargazing.

Dapple Cottage

Cosy and compact yet still packing a punch, this contemporary cabin is ideal for a romantic retreat for two. Inside, you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay, while outdoors, you can relax around the firepit after a day of exploration. With views across the Swanage countryside to the beach, you’ll soon be eager to explore. Head to the coast to enjoy dolphin spotting, wildlife watching, or a walk along the South West Coast Path, or hop on the historic Swanage Railway for a six-mile trip through picturesque countryside. 

Dorset Serenity

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields. 

Stud Cottage

Come for the countryside, stay for the drama. Set in the sprawling Wiltshire estate that once belonged to the twelfth Earl of Shaftesbury, this former riding house exudes the spirit of the original stables thanks to a meticulous restoration – modern comforts meet ancient artefacts and authenticity. It's one of those homes that takes your breath away from the second you open the front door. The owners have made no effort to cover up the fact it's from a bygone era – and that's why we love it, true to the past with period artwork, original features, beamed ceilings, even a banqueting hall for grand feasts (which feels very extravagant when you're having your cereal). The velvet furnishings and exposed brick only add to the step back in time. An honesty bar is housed in a secret cupboard by the billiard table, and there are floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where you can select a novel to lose yourself in. Each bedroom comes with a luxurious roll-top bath, and the wooden dividers that once separated horses have been cleverly repurposed to create privacy screens. Outside, vast acres of the manor's parkland are yours to explore, so remember to bring your welly boots. This home is a fine example of outstanding restoration – countryside lovers may never want to leave.

The Riding House

In the popular South Coast resort of Southsea, Portsmouth, you will find this fantastic home which boasts easy walking distance to the beach, a games room, a cinema room, and an outdoor terrace complete with a hot tub. So, whether the sun is shining during the summer or it’s a typical British day filled with rain, there is always something fun to do here. 

Spend your days on the beach or explore the vibrant city of Portsmouth with its fantastic outlet shopping at Gunwharf Quays – reachable in less than ten minutes by car. Enjoy a game of pool before dinnertime, and listen to songs from the jukebox as a backdrop to your family competition. Then, after dinner, snuggle up in the cinema room and watch a film. When the little ones are all tucked up in bed, what could be a better way to end the night than with a glass of wine in the hot tub?

Pier I Am

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

Courtyard Breakfast

Only forty-six spots across the country have achieved the ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ label, and the Isle of Wight plays host to one of them. As your home is set within this highly prized region, the landscapes around you are incredible. Five minutes on foot from Brook’s rugged coastal path and beach, fill your lungs with fresh air from the sea and relax in your country retreat. In a former farmhouse, complete with a rustic stone exterior and original timber beams inside, this apartment mixes traditional elements with modern flair and well-thought-out facilities. Families will love the playground – with swings and a trampoline – as well as the board game collection for rainy days. While the kids keep busy, you can relax in the vast lounge on a plush sofa, with a warm Earl Grey in hand. And with French doors in the master bedroom, you can open up the curtains to the lush lawn on a sunny morning, or make the most of stargazing opportunities at night. Feel free to pour a tumbler of whisky after the kids have gone to bed.

The Chestnut Cottage

Tucked in the woods just outside the village of Cranleigh, this beautiful home welcomes you to a rural retreat at the base of the Surrey Hills.

Surrounded by woodland with beautiful views across the River Meon, this home is ideally placed for a relaxing rural retreat. You can enjoy the views while sitting on the deck next to the water. Children will love exploring the grounds while everyone can enjoy cosy nights by the fire-pit. Inside, the rooms are simple, fresh and family-friendly. Your host provides a welcome pack with basic essentials and you’ll find plenty to explore in the surroundings. Follow the South Downs Way or adventure further afield to the villages of Meonstoke and Droxford.
