This converted grain store in the heart of the Kent countryside is as pretty as a picture. A perfect getaway for two, it manages to be both compact and spacious, with an open-plan living area that you’ll love to spend time in.

The surrounding area has plenty to offer if you can tear yourself away though. You’re only a couple of miles away from the all-important English country pub, and both Hever Castle and Penshurst Place are a ten-minute drive. 

Pull on your comfy boots and set out on a hike through the countryside, take a day trip to the refined spa town of Tunbridge Wells (twenty-five minutes by car), visit Chartwell (home of Winston Churchill) or just snuggle up in your little nest and forget about the rest of the world. 

There’s an outdoor seating area if you fancy dining alfresco, and from May to September, you can use the host’s lovely outdoor pool and terrace as well.

Set in a 500 acre estate on an organic dairy farm, this house is a sanctuary for lovers of the English countryside and would be the perfect escape for large groups and families. Original 17th century facets like the thatched dining room, diamond pane and stained glass windows have been preserved. There are parlours and living rooms for every mood, from the library with crimson leather sofas to the wood panelled drawing room for cosy nights by the fire.

Similarly there is a dining room for each meal. Morning sun streams into the breakfast room, while you can live out period drama fantasies in the grand Jacobean dining hall. The kitchen is well suited for cooking big meals, equipped with an Aga and lots of worktop space. Each light-filled bedroom has its own character, oozing rustic English charm, and the beds can be separated into twins on request. 

The natural surroundings will imbue you with a sense of peace. It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

Surrounded by woodland, there's ample opportunity for scenic walks. That's when you aren't soaking in the hot tub. The decked seating area is also ideal for alfresco meals or sunset drinks, with only nature and wildlife for company. Because of the bed set-up, it isn't the most private space, but it'll do for a small family.

Sometimes it's just nice to stay somewhere all shiny and new. This freshly converted farm cottage is one of a pair on a 500 acre private estate. Inside, there's an open living space with a log burner and our favourite feature – the bespoke country kitchen. A private terrace provides a sunny spot for sitting out on nice days, and there are country walks in every direction, with great pubs to visit along the way. All within a short drive, you can visit Chiddingstone Castle for afternoon tea, Hever Castle for a lesson in Tudor history or Tunbridge Wells for a spot of lunch.

The terrace, complete with a fire pit, is perfect for alfresco dining as the little ones play on the grass – it overlooks the Kent countryside, too. The village of Cowden is a short drive away, as is Tunbridge Wells, Penshurst Place, and Hever Castle. London Bridge is less than an hour by train, too – ideal for day trips to the capital.

This lower-ground apartment has a great location in Royal Tunbridge Wells, but more about the address shortly. Firstly, the plush living room has been decorated to a high standard and houses the dining table and a small double sofa bed for guests five and six. The narrow, galley-style kitchen is well-equipped, too, if you want to create some home-cooked meals. If you want a bit of fresh air, up some steps outside you'll find a lawned garden to enjoy. And, when you want to explore the area, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery is a short stroll away. Other attractions such as Dunorlan Park with its meadows and lakes, are also within walking distance.

A beautiful living room and snug both feature working fireplaces and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped when it comes to cooking for a large group (yes, there really are two dishwashers). You can even cook alfresco meals down at the pool house. But its most impressive room has to be the orangery, where a long dining table is the star of the show, against a backdrop of vast windows and doors with spectacular views.

You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. When you're ready for sleep, drift off in the plush beds in the country-style bedrooms, then wake up feeling well-rested and ready to explore Kent. You're perfectly located for adventures – make the twenty-minute drive to the coastal Dungeness National Nature Reserve or reward yourself after a stroll with a pint in one of the delicious pubs nearby.

From cosy mornings with a coffee on the sofa to energising workouts in the gym, there’s everything you could need here to feel rejuvenated. Days can be spent exploring the beautiful gardens, meeting the resident chickens and following one of the hiking trails into the Surrey countryside. The lovely village of Cranleigh is within walking distance and has all the amenities you could need.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

Right on the edge of Orlestone Forest and a twenty-minute drive from the coast, this quaint bolthole has been plucked from the lid of a chocolate box. Your host, Caroline, has created a cosy, clever and modern delight of a home with a mix of rustic and mid-century furnishings. Two comfy armchairs are positioned in front of the sliding doors, so you can keep one eye on the television and the other on the wildlife busying itself in the immaculate garden. Tuck into breakfast in your private courtyard before taking a stroll past the pond and golden barley fields to the paddock, where Caroline’s Soay sheep are kept. Set out on a yomp along country lanes, stopping at gastro pubs along the way. And when it’s time to get some rest, we guarantee you’ll be out like a light as soon as your head hits the pillow of your cloud-soft bed.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.

Just outside the village of Little Bentley, a five-minute walk from the local pub and a ten-minute drive from Colchester, this rustic barn is nestled on a working farm. Previously a popular children's café with fun play areas both indoors and out, it's an ancient barn that retains a great deal of rustic charm. 

Quirky and imaginative, it's a family home with an emphasis on keeping the little ones entertained (and safe – it's fully child-proofed). The huge living space is dominated at one end by a log burner, with aged leather sofas and throws perfect for cosying up on winter nights, while the other end features a super cool, Scandi-style kitchen – complete with a professional café coffee machine that's been left in situ so you can play barista. Fun things about this room include the chalkboard wall, a movie projector for film nights and an indoor hammock chair.  

One of the bedrooms is aimed at kids, with twin beds, funky lights, chalkboards, toys and books. But as if that wasn't enough, they have a whole play area in the main space, where imaginations can run wild thanks to a wooden teepee, a wooden shop and a range of homemade superhero capes to choose from. There's more outside with a willow tunnel and mud kitchen. As the sun sets, toast some marshmallows around the fire pit before heading to your cosy beds.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm.
