This converted grain store in the heart of the Kent countryside is as pretty as a picture. A perfect getaway for two, it manages to be both compact and spacious, with an open-plan living area that you’ll love to spend time in.

The surrounding area has plenty to offer if you can tear yourself away though. You’re only a couple of miles away from the all-important English country pub, and both Hever Castle and Penshurst Place are a ten-minute drive. 

Pull on your comfy boots and set out on a hike through the countryside, take a day trip to the refined spa town of Tunbridge Wells (twenty-five minutes by car), visit Chartwell (home of Winston Churchill) or just snuggle up in your little nest and forget about the rest of the world. 

There’s an outdoor seating area if you fancy dining alfresco, and from May to September, you can use the host’s lovely outdoor pool and terrace as well.

This spectacular Jacobean manor blends a tapestry of rich history with a modern, eco-friendly future. Set in a 500 acre estate on an organic dairy farm, this house is a sanctuary for lovers of the English countryside and would be the perfect escape for large groups and families. Original 17th century facets like the thatched dining room, diamond pane and stained glass windows have been preserved. There are parlours and living rooms for every mood, from the library with crimson leather sofas to the wood panelled drawing room for cosy nights by the fire.

Similarly there is a dining room for each meal. Morning sun streams into the breakfast room, while you can live out period drama fantasies in the grand Jacobean dining hall. The kitchen is well suited for cooking big meals, equipped with an Aga and lots of worktop space. Each light-filled bedroom has its own character, oozing rustic English charm, and the beds can be separated into twins on request. 

The natural surroundings will imbue you with a sense of peace. The house looks onto a pond and verdant gardens, and there are plenty of footpaths leading off the estate through the untamed countryside – some to excellent local pubs. Your hosts have made every effort for the estate to be eco-friendly, using green energy for heating and water and a rewilding project in the gardens. On warmer days you can enjoy Pimms and a barbecue on the lawn, surrounded by Arcadian beauty.

A unique way to experience Kent, this glamping pod overlooks 'the Garden of England'. With two beds – one positioned towards countryside views and the other found in the mezzanine above – this could work for four, but it's perfect for a romantic weekend away. Surrounded by woodland, there's ample opportunity for scenic walks. That's when you aren't soaking in the hot tub. The decked seating area is also ideal for alfresco meals or sunset drinks, with only nature and wildlife for company. Because of the bed set-up, it isn't the most private space, but it'll do for a small family.

It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

This charming home sits in the grounds of its owner's residence, surrounded by woodland. It’s a pretty and peaceful home, ideal for friends or couples looking to enjoy a break away from the city. 

This lovely home is just a seven-minute drive from Tonbridge, with its shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes. It’s also home to one of Britain’s oldest medieval castles, which is well worth a visit. For even more choice when shopping, you might drive thirteen minutes to Royal Tunbridge Wells. For something a little more active, hire canoes or kayaks and journey along the River Medway. Round things off with a pub lunch for a pretty perfect day. 

The house itself is cheerful and welcoming, with everything you might need for your stay. You’ll wake up each morning feeling well-rested thanks to the comfortable bedrooms, and then might whip up breakfast to share at the dining table. After a day spent seeing the sights, you can return to this cosy haven and spend the evening in the garden. Let the kids tire themselves out playing table tennis and bouncing on the trampoline while you sip cocktails in the patio garden. Fire up the barbecue for an alfresco feast, and later on toast marshmallows around the fire pit.

Right in the heart of the Kent countryside, it's the kind of place people come to read books, go for long, rambling walks and try a pint or two of local beer on a country pub stop. The home is modern and pristine, with character touches like wood floors, rustic doors and exposed beams upstairs. It's been laid out with accessibility in mind, with the master bedroom on the ground floor and an en suite wetroom fitted with grab rails. Outside there's a private terrace, enclosed with natural hurdle fencing made from trees on the estate itself. Nearby is the picture-perfect village of Chiddingstone (so ancient and important that its owned by the National Trust) and Bough Beech Reservoir. Travel a little further and you'll come to Hever Castle, Penshurst Place and the spa town of Tunbridge Wells.

If it looks brand spanking new, that's because it is. One of a pair of freshly converted farm cottages, this home been given a new lease of life. It's part of a five-hundred-acre private estate which focuses on sustainability, with an organic dairy farm and an environmental education centre on site. Inside, there's an open living space with a log burner and our favourite feature – the bespoke country kitchen. A private terrace provides a sunny spot for sitting out on nice days, and there are country walks in every direction, with great pubs to visit along the way. All within a short drive, you can visit Chiddingstone Castle for afternoon tea, Hever Castle for a lesson in Tudor history or Tunbridge Wells for a spot of lunch.

Pastoral Bliss

This home offers a rural location and modern interiors, and we're all for it. The terrace, complete with a fire pit, is perfect for alfresco dining as the little ones play on the grass – it overlooks the Kent countryside, too. Indoors, the open-plan living area has more than enough space for four, so you definitely won't feel on top of each other here. Looking to explore? The village of Cowden is a short drive away, as is Tunbridge Wells, Penshurst Place, and Hever Castle. London Bridge is less than an hour by train, too – ideal for day trips to the capital.

As well as a handy train station a ten-minute walk away (the train takes you to London Victoria in forty-five minutes), there’s a handful of cafés, pubs and shops for supplies. Woodland walks are on offer a five-minute walk from the house.

This charming red-brick home hides a comfortable and modern interior with a few traditional farmhouse touches. There’s an upright piano in the plush living room for an evening sing-along, a well-stocked library in the downstairs bedroom and the kitchen has a modern yet rustic feel. From here, glass double doors lead to the private garden, bursting with greenery. There’s dining for the group on the lawn and hidden swinging chairs amidst the shrubs and trees.

This lower-ground apartment has a great location in Royal Tunbridge Wells, but more about the address shortly. Firstly, the plush living room has been decorated to a high standard and houses the dining table and a small double sofa bed for guests five and six. The narrow, galley-style kitchen is well-equipped, too, if you want to create some home-cooked meals. If you want a bit of fresh air, up some steps outside you'll find a lawned garden to enjoy. And, when you want to explore the area, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery is a short stroll away. Other attractions such as Dunorlan Park with its meadows and lakes, are also within walking distance.

The Chalybeate Spring

This charming cottage is on the edge of Matfield, a village with two pubs and a great setting-off point for countryside walks. This cosy abode is ideal for those wanting to explore the Kent and Sussex countryside, as well as the local wine farms. Hastings and the coast are only a forty-five-minute drive, too. The cottage has plenty of room, with a double sofa bed in the summer room for those wanting to spread out. We love the beautiful enclosed garden and patio, where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Driving up to this home, you’ll no doubt feel as though you’re entering your own version of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton – and once you step inside, it only gets grander. Wooden panel walls, classic fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers, and four poster beds add to the stately comfort of this quintessentially English manor house. Spend the morning nursing a cup of tea with breakfast, before retiring to one of the many rooms to find the most comfortable sofa – of which there are many – so you can spend a few hours getting lost in a Jane Austen novel. Afterwards walk the beautifully manicured grounds, and if you happen to reenact some of the scenes from Pride & Prejudice, we promise not to tell.  

Family trips can be spent puzzling together, or getting all hands on deck in the kitchen to prepare a feast fit for lords and ladies, whilst luxury hen and stag parties might choose to celebrate a different way. Regardless of why you came, once you experience the peaceful reprieve the manor has to offer, you won't want to leave.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live next door to a member of the royal family, this place might have the answers. Situated just a few metres from iconic Windsor Castle, this simple but stylish apartment is a great base for those looking to get up close and personal with British royalty, tucked just round the corner from the late Queen’s historic weekend home. 

Wander down the cobbled street and find yourself face to face with the oldest occupied castle in the world, then set off for a relaxing stroll along the river followed by a spot of window shopping in Windsor’s boutique stores. With a prime position on Dunstable's High Street, this apartment in a 19th-century building is a peaceful enclave away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Step inside and you're greeted by an interior dominated by cleansing shades of white and muted greys, with only the odd houseplant and piece of artwork adding a little colour and character. Stylish parquet flooring sits underfoot, while the glossy kitchen is a triumph of minimalist design. 

The home gets plenty of natural light from the tall triple glazed windows on either side of the space, but if you want to feel the sunshine on your skin, you also have the option of heading out to the building's communal courtyard, which has seating and a table, plus free cycle hire for you to explore.

Being right in the centre of town, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants lying nearby in case you're not in the mood to cook. Even though it's possible to get into London in around an hour on the train, there's a wealth of beautiful countryside around the home, too — Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate are only five minutes' drive, for example.

Just outside the village of Little Bentley, a five-minute walk from the local pub and a ten-minute drive from Colchester, this rustic barn is nestled on a working farm. Previously a popular children's café with fun play areas both indoors and out, it's an ancient barn that retains a great deal of rustic charm. 

Quirky and imaginative, it's a family home with an emphasis on keeping the little ones entertained (and safe – it's fully child-proofed). The huge living space is dominated at one end by a log burner, with aged leather sofas and throws perfect for cosying up on winter nights, while the other end features a super cool, Scandi-style kitchen – complete with a professional café coffee machine that's been left in situ so you can play barista. Fun things about this room include the chalkboard wall, a movie projector for film nights and an indoor hammock chair.  

One of the bedrooms is aimed at kids, with twin beds, funky lights, chalkboards, toys and books. But as if that wasn't enough, they have a whole play area in the main space, where imaginations can run wild thanks to a wooden teepee, a wooden shop and a range of homemade superhero capes to choose from. There's more outside with a willow tunnel and mud kitchen. As the sun sets, toast some marshmallows around the fire pit before heading to your cosy beds.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.
