This charming cottage is on the edge of Matfield, a village with two pubs and a great setting-off point for countryside walks. This cosy abode is ideal for those wanting to explore the Kent and Sussex countryside, as well as the local wine farms. Hastings and the coast are only a forty-five-minute drive, too. The cottage has plenty of room, with a double sofa bed in the summer room for those wanting to spread out. We love the beautiful enclosed garden and patio, where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

The twin room connects to the main bedroom, so this place is best suited to a small family or a romantic getaway for two. Located within Stone Street, those that enjoy a walk can explore the local pubs and numerous National Trust properties in the area – Ightham Mote is just across the fields.

After a day in the fresh air, you’ll love the feeling of coming home to relax in the roll-top bath. Warm summer evenings can be spent in the beautiful garden, enjoying the playful sweetness of this setting. Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the grounds of a 50-acre estate, this detached oast house overlooks fields and paddocks from its southwest-facing terrace and lawned garden. You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Sometimes it's just nice to stay somewhere all shiny and new. This freshly converted farm cottage is one of a pair on a 500 acre private estate. Right in the heart of the Kent countryside, it's the kind of place people come to read books, go for long, rambling walks and try a pint or two of local beer on a country pub stop. The home is modern and pristine, with character touches like wood floors, rustic doors and exposed beams upstairs. It's been laid out with accessibility in mind, with the master bedroom on the ground floor and an en suite wetroom fitted with grab rails. Outside there's a private terrace, enclosed with natural hurdle fencing made from trees on the estate itself. Nearby is the picture-perfect village of Chiddingstone (so ancient and important that its owned by the National Trust) and Bough Beech Reservoir. Travel a little further and you'll come to Hever Castle, Penshurst Place and the spa town of Tunbridge Wells.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

It's part of a five-hundred-acre private estate which focuses on sustainability, with an organic dairy farm and an environmental education centre on site. Inside, there's an open living space with a log burner and our favourite feature – the bespoke country kitchen. A private terrace provides a sunny spot for sitting out on nice days, and there are country walks in every direction, with great pubs to visit along the way. All within a short drive, you can visit Chiddingstone Castle for afternoon tea, Hever Castle for a lesson in Tudor history or Tunbridge Wells for a spot of lunch.

It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

This spectacular Jacobean manor blends a tapestry of rich history with a modern, eco-friendly future. Set in a 500 acre estate on an organic dairy farm, this house is a sanctuary for lovers of the English countryside and would be the perfect escape for large groups and families. Original 17th century facets like the thatched dining room, diamond pane and stained glass windows have been preserved. There are parlours and living rooms for every mood, from the library with crimson leather sofas to the wood panelled drawing room for cosy nights by the fire.

Similarly there is a dining room for each meal. Morning sun streams into the breakfast room, while you can live out period drama fantasies in the grand Jacobean dining hall. The kitchen is well suited for cooking big meals, equipped with an Aga and lots of worktop space. Each light-filled bedroom has its own character, oozing rustic English charm, and the beds can be separated into twins on request. 

The natural surroundings will imbue you with a sense of peace. The house looks onto a pond and verdant gardens, and there are plenty of footpaths leading off the estate through the untamed countryside – some to excellent local pubs. Your hosts have made every effort for the estate to be eco-friendly, using green energy for heating and water and a rewilding project in the gardens. On warmer days you can enjoy Pimms and a barbecue on the lawn, surrounded by Arcadian beauty.

Hidden away in the gardens of a 16th-century manor house, this home in East Sussex was once a stone farm building, but today, you'll find a rather lovely rural escape.

Despite the property's long history, the interior is contemporary in style, with smart Karndean flooring, soothing white walls and furnishings that come from the Scandi school of style. Aside from during the depths of winter, fresh flowers sourced from the flourishing south-facing garden, which can be spotted out of the living room windows, are thoughtfully arranged about the house by the host. 

Head out the back door and you can admire the magnolia tree and plant beds for yourself, or simply sit out on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. From this vantage point, It's possible to see Newick's 11th-century sandstone church — the clock of which is silent, you might be happy to learn.

Elsewhere in the village, there's a cricket pitch, a children's playground, and a woodland walk that comes alive with bluebells in the spring. In the morning, why not check out the local bakery and grab some fresh croissants for breakfast? For lunch, stop by the cafe, and for dinner, choose from three oak-beamed pubs featuring roaring fires and tasty meals, all within easy walking distance.

Although the locale feels like the quintessential English countryside, the city of Brighton only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car whenever you have a hankering for a day at the seaside.

Whether you’re sipping something refreshing in the lakeside garden or heading out to explore nearby walking trails and heritage sites, this is an easy-going base for a peaceful countryside break. This charming red-brick home hides a comfortable and modern interior with a few traditional farmhouse touches. There’s an upright piano in the plush living room for an evening sing-along, a well-stocked library in the downstairs bedroom and the kitchen has a modern yet rustic feel. From here, glass double doors lead to the private garden, bursting with greenery. There’s dining for the group on the lawn and hidden swinging chairs amidst the shrubs and trees.

A delightfully quaint bolthole set in the beautiful Kent countryside, this home's modern black facade is complemented by a rustic and quirky interior. Glass-fronted and beaming with sunlight all year round, the bright living space is warm and welcoming from the moment you arrive. The fully-equipped kitchen has soft wooden tables and open shelves, creating a homely and relaxing space to gather over a homecooked meal. It opens onto the trendy and whimsical lounge, with its yellow armchair and eclectic decorations. We loved the garden most of all – slide open the glass doors and step outside into the fresh air. Outside, you'll find an alfresco dining area – the perfect spot to tuck into the cake host Georgina leaves for you – and a cosy lounge area surrounding an open-air fire pit, which is ideal for enjoying a moment of calm while watching the sunset. You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. When you're ready for sleep, drift off in the plush beds in the country-style bedrooms, then wake up feeling well-rested and ready to explore Kent. You're perfectly located for adventures – make the twenty-minute drive to the coastal Dungeness National Nature Reserve or reward yourself after a stroll with a pint in one of the delicious pubs nearby.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

Inside, vaulted beamed ceilings and country chic decor create a warm and cosy welcome. Make yourself at home on one of the armchairs by the wood-burning fire and enjoy a glass of wine and some quiet reading in the warmth of its glow. Let’s face it – it’s that ginormous indoor private pool and state-of-the-art Swedish sauna taking all the limelight at this barn conversion property, and rightly so. It’s a luxury few expect for a home nestled away in the quiet Kent countryside. In warmer months, slide the bifold doors right back to let the sunshine in and enjoy views of the pristinely manicured gardens beyond. You could easily while away the whole day – in fact, the entire week - padding between the pool, sauna, and outdoor sun loungers, with an occasional barbecue thrown in, to spice things up. And there are more welcome surprises inside this home too. The spacious light-filled lounge and dining area overlooks the swimming pool – handy for keeping an eye on poolside antics even when you’re indoors. And upstairs, there’s a secondary lounge with Juliet balcony doors revealing views of the gardens and distant rolling fields. With such vast countryside views, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here, but you’re not as remote as you first thought. The pretty neighbouring villages all have excellent pubs serving hearty food, and the bustling cathedral town of Canterbury is just over a twenty-minute drive away. And let’s not forget the coast - pack up a picnic, and you can be on the sweeping sandy shores of Folkestone in thirty minutes flat.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.
