A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.

Built back in the mid-nineteenth century, this Grade-II listed house in Stamford is a real looker from the outside, thanks to its slate roof, coursed stone walls and a white clock face at the very top of the property. The interior is just as handsome, although perhaps a little more modern than might be anticipated. Black leather furnishings and stark white walls are a chic combination in the dual-aspect living area, as is the wood-panelled kitchen and the glass dining room table. Around the back of the house, there's a small patio area with seating so you can make the most of bursts of bright weather. There are plenty of rural attractions around these parts if you visit during the warmer seasons. The sixteenth-century manor, Burghley House, and the adjacent parkland can be reached in twelve minutes by car, while Rutland Water Nature Reserve takes around eighteen.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

Where The Art Is

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation and the chef's kitchen (complete with four ovens), and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side. 

Step out through the bi-fold doors onto a large patio area with garden furniture for seamless indoor and outdoor dining. Down from the patio is a large grass area and a hot tub suitable for seven people. This is the perfect garden for summer socials and barbecues.

When the sun shines on the stone exterior, sit out on the dreamy garden table next to the water. Idyllic and peaceful, it's a serene spot to tuck into breakfast or just sit with a glass of wine. 

If you fancy heading out of the home, Baston is formed by scenic walking trails along the river. If you're taking your dog, they'll love the open green spaces and woodland areas.

For the days where you fancy some urban comforts, Peterborough and Stamford are just a short drive away. Stamford is a postcard-picture town – cobbled streets are lined with homely pubs and authentic cafes. Spend a day perusing the shops, exploring the market and sipping a beer in the pub garden.

In fact, the gardens are noteworthy enough to have had an entire episode of BBC's Gardener's World devoted to them.

The home packs in plenty of charm from the moment you enter its grand entrance hall, with eye-catching colourful tiles, an imposing fireplace and elegant antiques. It's a similar story throughout the rest of the ground floor, with the addition of wood panelling in the reading room, large bay windows overlooking the garden in the drawing room, and plenty of light and space beneath the beautiful vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Here, a large pine table sits up to ten adults or fourteen with children – perfect for large gatherings of friends and family.

Upstairs houses the six bedrooms, each with its own unique atmosphere and no less lovely than the last. Stop by the local village shop, for fresh bread only a four-minute stroll away and be sure to enjoy a nightcap at The King's Head Pub – a five-minute walk away. Restored to high quality, the cottage itself is a humble breath of fresh air, that feels completely private despite its close proximity to the host's main house. Cosy interiors create a warm and welcoming space to snuggle up in after a day of taking in the country air. Sip a cup of tea in front of the log burner fire – oh and there's underfloor heating too, so you needn't worry about getting cold toes here. Outside you'll have your own private decking area with picturesque views over the garden. It's a haven of wildlife during the spring and summer months – if you're lucky you might even get to see the pheasant that often frequents this space. Get the barbecue going when it's warm out and spend the evening stargazing up at the twinkling sky (since there are no street lights here – it's an incredible sight). If you're staying for a few days you might want to venture out to discover more of historic Lincoln – check out the city's castle and cathedral, only a forty-minute drive away. Not to mention the miles of unspoilt coastline that is easily in reach if you head further east.

It was designed by an architect with flexibility and accessibility at its core – there's a lowered kitchen island, wet rooms with shower seats and handrails, and it's all wheelchair-accessible. There's plenty to do here, with an arts and crafts playroom and a secured garden with a firepit and barbecue, and it's all surrounded by acres of woodland. Whether you're here for nature walks or wildlife-spotting, you'll find it all in the local trails and quaint villages of the area. The local villages and market towns with their restaurants, cafés and independent shops are a short drive away.

Although you’re surrounded by the fields and fells of Derbyshire’s peaceful countryside here, this family-sized home is just a fifteen-minute drive from the centre of Derby. You’ve got cycleways and walking trails on your doorstep, and museums of industry, galleries and a beautiful gothic cathedral to explore in nearby Derby.

On arrival, this place rises up like a striking, red-brick barn. The lawns are vast – perfect for kids that want to run around and let off steam. The back garden is home to a private hot tub for post-walk soaks and outdoor dining on the patio overlooking the bucolic Derbyshire scenery.

This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.

This semi-detached cottage is nestled in the beautiful grounds of the Chatsworth Estate. Accessed by a single-track road (not suitable for low cars), you’ll be welcomed by cosy rooms and a wonderful sense of seclusion. There is also a wood-burning stove, a private rear garden and flexible sleeping arrangements – the zip-and-link bed can be arranged as a double or two single beds on request. Guests can enjoy multi-entrance tickets to the House and Gardens, as well as access to the estate gym, tennis court and swimming pool for an additional fee.
