This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

Pastoral in every sense of the word, this converted church is set just outside the town of Docking. Countryside landscapes surround the settlement, but you can also stroll out to find pubs and traditional chip shops in the heart of the village. Your home would have formerly been a hub of prayers and song, but now stands as a luxurious holiday pad.

While the exterior is true to its original purpose, you’ll be stunned by the elegant decor inside. A colourful Persian rug lines the wooden floors in the lofty lounge, where chunky timber beams support a high, apex ceiling. But the most striking feature has to be the windows. Tall, panelled, and with coloured stained glass at the peak, the light just hits differently in this home. And when you wake up in the morning, there’s nothing quite like the blue pattern of the stained glass coming through at sunrise.

It's set in Dersingham, a traditional village, with great pubs, tea rooms and its own National Nature Reserve. Plus, you're an eighteen-minute walk from the royal residence and its immaculate gardens. Take leafy strolls through the beautiful countryside and woodland footpaths with your four-legged friends (they're allowed) or spend sunny afternoons relaxing on Snettisham Beach, just a ten-minute drive away. Return home to a cosy living room under the warmth of a rustic wood-burning stove – there's ample seating, including a comfy armchair that has evening reading written all over it. The low ceilings, pleasing patterns and calming colour palette make for a delightful space to unwind. Although on warmer days, spend time relaxing on the pretty patio and in your private garden with a glass of wine. 

Brook Cottage

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.  

Lady’s Mantle

Regular visitors to Norfolk will instantly recognise the dusty ginger colour of this cottage's facade. That's because it's constructed from Carrstone, an iron-oxide-rich variation of sandstone used to construct many of the local region's most famous buildings. Along with the surrounding crop fields, this exterior makes for a picturesque backdrop while sitting out in the garden.

Inside, the design is a little more contemporary, if straightforwardly so. The wood floors and exposed brickwork around the multi-fuel stove are in keeping with the rustic location, while the large kitchen and bathrooms are a lot more sleek and modern in comparison.

When you fancy a day out, the coastal town of Hunstanton and its beaches take just over five minutes to reach in the car and Sandringham Estate is only twenty minutes' drive away, too. Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve sits the same amount of time away and is wonderful for bird spotting.

Docking Daze

Take off into the beautiful wilds of the Lincolnshire countryside with a stay at this Victorian farm cottage on the doorstep of a 400-acre nature reserve. 

Don the home’s wellington boots to voyage through the surrounding woodlands with roaming wild ponies just moments from your door. Rejuvenate with a pampering session at the estate’s natural spa (think Cleopatra copper milk and flower baths) – a minute’s drive away. Or up the ante with archery and axe throwing lessons before a bonfire evening – it’s all going on here.

Back at home, this place is everything you’d imagined your country retreat to be. The décor is on the right side of quirky – not too minimalist, not too over-filled with antiques – and freshly cut flowers and vibrant textiles add dashes of colour. Over in the farmhouse kitchen, there’s a mighty range oven to cook up a feast. Or treat yourself to a gourmet farmhouse breakfast or afternoon tea, delivered straight to your door.

On long summer evenings, keep the night flowing in the walled garden beside the firepit. And on wintery nights, draw the curtains and hunker down for board games by candlelight. With wood stacked by the log burner, you may have no desire to venture out. But should you fancy a change of scene, South Ferriby's award-winning pub (a thirteen-minute drive) is an evening well spent.

On chillier afternoons, snuggle up by the fire with a book or a board game, sipping wine and making yourself right at home. Sleepy and charming, Docking is a family-friendly village with ample to discover nearby. For your seaside fix, it's just a twenty-minute drive to some of North Norfolk's finest sandy beaches, including Old Hunstanton and Holkham. If you fancy trying your hand at crabbing, then our advice is to head to the harbour at Wells-next-the-Sea. And close by is also the Holkham Hall & Estate – a grand, stately home as well as a deer park and a lake with boats to hire.

Widgeon

This cosy home is the perfect spot for a family getaway to historical Norfolk. Get cosy on the sofa as you socialise over a cup of coffee or curl up on one of the armchairs with a soft cushion as you read your favourite book by the window. 

The kitchen has a beautiful blend of rustic features and modern appliances, where you can bake a sugary sweet cake or a plate of comfort food. Head out to the verdant garden to tuck into a slice, accompanied by a refreshing glass of lemonade, or a sumptuous glass of wine. An Afternoon Picnic

Positively brimming with character, this Grade II listed cottage is just the ticket for a holiday on the Norfolk coast. Warm and welcoming, every inch of this snug bolthole oozes traditional charm, be it the plush chesterfield sofa, the sumptuous clawfoot bathtub or the vintage furniture dotted in each room. We love how cosy the lounge is – in the winter, there's nothing better than curling up by the wood-burning stove with a steaming mug of cocoa. During the warmer months, there's a sunny enclosed courtyard to enjoy. Morning, noon or night, it's a sweet spot to start and end each day, sharing homecooked meals and bottles of wine as the evening draws to a close. Location-wise, you're just a seven-minute drive from Heacham South Beach on Norfolk's idyllic coastline. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting the wildlife at RSPB Snettisham (eight minutes away by car), history buffs can wander the halls of Sandringham (a ten-minute drive), and amblers have a myriad of trails to roam in Snettisham Woods and the nearby nature reserves. Following a busy day exploring, reward yourself with a drink and a bite to eat at one of the pubs in the village – they're all within walking distance.

Birdspotting

This classic 19th-century brick and flint beauty lives anew as a palatial home with plenty of wow factor. Located close to the village’s 14th-century church and cosy country pub, this home is the perfect place for celebrations with family and friends. Inside, the rooms range from regal to rustic, with a carefully created mix of traditional, antiquated, and modern touches. The stunning dining room is ideal for sumptuous dinner parties fit for royalty, who can be found on the Sandringham estate nearby. The library is our favourite spot for taking a moment to unwind and relax, flicking through the ample books provided.

Meanwhile, an upstairs galleried landing with a vaulted ceiling and cosy open fire provides more of an unassuming, homely charm, while downstairs the garden room basks in natural daylight. Outdoors, the garden provides plenty of space for children and the family dog to roam freely. There's also plenty to do locally too. Spend a day on the beach at one of Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches (several are dog-friendly), walk the Peddars Way and pop over to neighbouring Great Massingham, a picturesque village with two charming duck ponds and the Dabbling Duck Inn. 

Margaret's Feast

Country Idyll is the kind of home that makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the front door. Classically charming with a modern twist, it sets the scene for a memorable escape in rural Lincolnshire. As soon as you arrive, drop your bags, flick on the kettle and cut yourself a slice of cake from the complimentary hamper left by your host. Take a seat at the bistro set in your quaint country garden and watch the birds and rabbits flit across the lawn. Once you’re rested and recharged, pull on your walking boots and set out for a ramble along bridleways and lesser travelled lanes. Plus, you’re less than a fifteen-minute drive from the market town of Grantham and the historic castle and stately home of Belvoir.  When you get home, the cosy living room with comfy tufted sofas calls for an evening in front of the crackling log fire, sharing a bottle of your favourite drop and playing board games with your loved ones.
