Regular visitors to Norfolk will instantly recognise the dusty ginger colour of this cottage's facade. That's because it's constructed from Carrstone, an iron-oxide-rich variation of sandstone used to construct many of the local region's most famous buildings. Along with the surrounding crop fields, this exterior makes for a picturesque backdrop while sitting out in the garden.

Inside, the design is a little more contemporary, if straightforwardly so. The wood floors and exposed brickwork around the multi-fuel stove are in keeping with the rustic location, while the large kitchen and bathrooms are a lot more sleek and modern in comparison.

When you fancy a day out, the coastal town of Hunstanton and its beaches take just over five minutes to reach in the car and Sandringham Estate is only twenty minutes' drive away, too. Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve sits the same amount of time away and is wonderful for bird spotting.

This postcard-pretty detached flint cottage, set in the charming village of Sedgeford in North West Norfolk, may have old bones (circa. 1880), but pure modern luxury awaits inside.

The very embodiment of all things English and classic, there’s an open-plan living and dining area with a magnificent inglenook fireplace at its heart and storybook armchairs feathered by sheepskins and plump cushions just waiting for you to sink right in. While upstairs, you’ll find two bright and sunny bedrooms with charming views of village life through the chocolate-box windows.

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts and countless rounds of tea in the charming walled garden. Then pack up your bucket and spades and head for the coast (just a short two-and half-mile drive away) to rejuvenate with its vast open skies and sandy shores – Hunstanton, Brancaster, and Holme-next-the-Sea are all nearby.

When tummies start to rumble, there’s a charming 19th-century pub just a short walk from the cottage for upper-crust grub and fine ales. Or blaze a trail to search out lip-smacking fish and chips and lashings of ice creams along the seafront in nearby Old Hunstanton – it would be rude not to.

Country Idyll is the kind of home that makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the front door. Classically charming with a modern twist, it sets the scene for a memorable escape in rural Lincolnshire. As soon as you arrive, drop your bags, flick on the kettle and cut yourself a slice of cake from the complimentary hamper left by your host. Take a seat at the bistro set in your quaint country garden and watch the birds and rabbits flit across the lawn. Once you’re rested and recharged, pull on your walking boots and set out for a ramble along bridleways and lesser travelled lanes. Plus, you’re less than a fifteen-minute drive from the market town of Grantham and the historic castle and stately home of Belvoir.  When you get home, the cosy living room with comfy tufted sofas calls for an evening in front of the crackling log fire, sharing a bottle of your favourite drop and playing board games with your loved ones.

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.

The rural landscapes of Norfolk are truly a sight to behold. With the rugged coast and the lush Norfolk Broads, the diverse range of scenery brings visitors from far and wide across the region, with this home allowing easy access to it all. Around a twenty-minute drive from fabulous hikes along breezy coastal paths, this village abode will certainly give you a warm welcome home.

Pastoral in every sense of the word, this converted church is set just outside the town of Docking. Countryside landscapes surround the settlement, but you can also stroll out to find pubs and traditional chip shops in the heart of the village. Your home would have formerly been a hub of prayers and song, but now stands as a luxurious holiday pad.

While the exterior is true to its original purpose, you’ll be stunned by the elegant decor inside. A colourful Persian rug lines the wooden floors in the lofty lounge, where chunky timber beams support a high, apex ceiling. But the most striking feature has to be the windows. Tall, panelled, and with coloured stained glass at the peak, the light just hits differently in this home. This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

Where The Art Is

On the edge of the Sandringham Estate, this cottage is the perfect home for the discerning country settler looking to explore the delights of Norfolk. It's set in Dersingham, a traditional village, with great pubs, tea rooms and its own National Nature Reserve. Plus, you're an eighteen-minute walk from the royal residence and its immaculate gardens. Take leafy strolls through the beautiful countryside and woodland footpaths with your four-legged friends (they're allowed) or spend sunny afternoons relaxing on Snettisham Beach, just a ten-minute drive away. Return home to a cosy living room under the warmth of a rustic wood-burning stove – there's ample seating, including a comfy armchair that has evening reading written all over it. The low ceilings, pleasing patterns and calming colour palette make for a delightful space to unwind. Although on warmer days, spend time relaxing on the pretty patio and in your private garden with a glass of wine. 

Brook Cottage

This classic 19th-century brick and flint beauty lives anew as a palatial home with plenty of wow factor. Located close to the village’s 14th-century church and cosy country pub, this home is the perfect place for celebrations with family and friends. Inside, the rooms range from regal to rustic, with a carefully created mix of traditional, antiquated, and modern touches. The stunning dining room is ideal for sumptuous dinner parties fit for royalty, who can be found on the Sandringham estate nearby. The library is our favourite spot for taking a moment to unwind and relax, flicking through the ample books provided.

Meanwhile, an upstairs galleried landing with a vaulted ceiling and cosy open fire provides more of an unassuming, homely charm, while downstairs the garden room basks in natural daylight. Outdoors, the garden provides plenty of space for children and the family dog to roam freely. There's also plenty to do locally too. Spend a day on the beach at one of Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches (several are dog-friendly), walk the Peddars Way and pop over to neighbouring Great Massingham, a picturesque village with two charming duck ponds and the Dabbling Duck Inn.

Tucked away in Sedgeford, this refurbished cottage has plenty of warm English charm. Home comforts reign supreme here, with soothing light tones complemented by the lounge's wood-burner and feature walls in many of the bedrooms. In the summer months, relax outside in the peaceful garden, drink in hand. Heading outside, Hunstanton, Holkham and Sheringham are just a few of the unspoilt and historic beaches of the North Norfolk Coastline, waiting to be explored. Inland, rent a bicycle and take a ride past the artisanal shops and purple lavender fields of Heacham. Further afield, the Peddars Way trail takes you from the outskirts of the village to beautiful coastal paths and idyllic scenery. This newly refurbished cottage can be found in the peaceful village of Snettisham. It’s a perfect home from home, with a sunny colour palette and a relaxed, homely vibe perfect for a family holiday. French doors open from the living room into the courtyard garden for coffees on sunny mornings and outdoor suppers in the summer. Snettisham has its own shingle beach and you’re just ten minutes’ drive from the sands of beautiful Brancaster. The hosts allow pets, so bring your pooch for long windy walks on the coast or under big Norfolk skies in the local nature reserve. 

Yellow Mellow

On the northwestern coast of Norfolk, seaside villages sit alongside lush farmlands and golf courses. This home in Heacham is in a prime location just a mile from the town’s south beach, but also allows easy access for countryside hikes. Yes, this rural lifestyle is certainly among the best the country has to offer – and the proof is truly in the pudding, with the royal family’s beloved Sandringham Estate just over a ten-minute drive from home. 

Speaking of proofing and puddings, it’s more than fitting that this delightful cottage was once a baker’s shop. While the building looks distinctly more modern than yesteryear, with a clean lick of white paint and stylish charcoal window frames, the smell of a freshly baked loaf certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

Culture buffs should make the twenty-minute drive into historic York for its ancient Minster and medieval Shambles. Finish the afternoon with a well-earned gin and tonic beside the pretty River Ouse.
