A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.  

Lady’s Mantle

This charming cottage in the quiet village of Long Marston is the perfect base from which to explore nearby York and its surrounding countryside. Inside, the place is bursting with character. Modern renovations cleverly incorporate the building’s original features and an eclectic selection of colour and texture adds extra intrigue throughout. We particularly loved the eye-catching orange sofa and French antique bed in the second bedroom. Begin your mornings with a bite to eat in the light-filled living space or spill out into the garden for breakfast alfresco if the weather is on your side. For those who like to like to get out into nature, a ramble through the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is in order – it’ll take you around an hour to get there by car. Culture buffs should make the twenty-minute drive into historic York for its ancient Minster and medieval Shambles. Finish the afternoon with a well-earned gin and tonic beside the pretty River Ouse.

Orange Fizz

The stereotype linked to those from Yorkshire is that they're a straightforward bunch of people and they aren't afraid to say it how it is. This apartment in the centre of York is similarly no-nonsense and will ensure guests have a hitchless time in this idyllic part of England. The design is simple but effectively so, with the neutral palette of greys and whites livened up by the occasional burst of burnt orange. There's a fireplace to gather around on those chillier evenings, while the mirrored doors on the bedroom wardrobe will make it easy to get ready ahead of an evening out. Located four minutes' walk from the York City Walls, many of the main attractions are equally easy to reach. The cathedral is less than ten minutes away on foot, while the castle takes fifteen.

The Grand Old Duke

Located just ten minutes' walk from the centre of York, this address is comprised of two townhouses on a quiet residential street. Given that they're neighbouring properties, it will probably come as no surprise to learn that the layouts of both homes are pretty similar and they have been styled in a complementary fashion too, with wooden floors, traditional furnishings and walls painted in muted colours.

There are plenty of welcome extras to discover, too. South-facing terraces with seating can be found outside the back door of each home. If it's a rainy afternoon, there's a basement in one of the houses that has a home cinema set-up, a foosball table and a large selection of board games. Upstairs, the Japanese-style soaking tub provides an altogether more relaxing option.

Although York's historic attractions in the centre of the city are easily reachable on foot, there are plenty more distractions even closer by. Bishopthorpe Road — affectionately known to locals as Bishy Road — awaits at the end of the street and is packed with great restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. If you're looking to get acquainted with a number of them, the host can lend guests a House of York Craft Savvy Card, which offers a quarter of the bill at many independent spots. 

Nunnery Lane

Sitting on the edge of a nature reserve that's home to wild Exmoor ponies, this Victorian cottage is a perfectly picturesque rural escape. The antique-filled living room comes with a wood-burning stove that will be especially appreciated after long walks out in Lincolnshire, while the country-style kitchen is a charming spot for cooking hearty dinners. When the weather allows, you can also head out into the garden and light up the fire pit when it's time for star-watching.

That would be reason enough to visit, but there's a great range of attractions on the local farm that sweeten the deal even more. A minute's walk from the front door is a natural spa in which you can book a session and be pampered, while you can also try your hand at various outdoor activities, including archery and axe-throwing. There are even onsite private catering options, just in case you'd like dinner or afternoon tea delivered to your door. 

When it comes to getting to know the local area a little better, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to historic market towns, country parks and walking routes, while Scunthorpe is only a ten-minute drive away when you need shops and restaurants.

Old Mother Nature's Recipes

A hidden gem nestled in the heart of Lincolnshire's beautiful countryside, this cute cottage resides in the village of Tealby. Offering a quintessential English countryside experience, you'll be located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it's the perfect spot for bolthole walkers, cyclists and those in need of some time with nature. Just moments from the villages local amenities, you'll find The Vintage Tearooms offering delicious breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas just a two-minute walk away. Stop by the local village shop, for fresh bread only a four-minute stroll away and be sure to enjoy a nightcap at The King's Head Pub – a five-minute walk away. Restored to high quality, the cottage itself is a humble breath of fresh air, that feels completely private despite its close proximity to the host's main house. Cosy interiors create a warm and welcoming space to snuggle up in after a day of taking in the country air. Sip a cup of tea in front of the log burner fire – oh and there's underfloor heating too, so you needn't worry about getting cold toes here. Outside you'll have your own private decking area with picturesque views over the garden. It's a haven of wildlife during the spring and summer months – if you're lucky you might even get to see the pheasant that often frequents this space. Get the barbecue going when it's warm out and spend the evening stargazing up at the twinkling sky (since there are no street lights here – it's an incredible sight). If you're staying for a few days you might want to venture out to discover more of historic Lincoln – check out the city's castle and cathedral, only a forty-minute drive away. Not to mention the miles of unspoilt coastline that is easily in reach if you head further east. 

Pheasant's Nest

Built in 1745, this historic English manor is set in the glorious Norfolk countryside. It is a magnificent estate with grand spaces and luscious grounds, perfect for an exclusive country retreat with your closest family and friends. The Grade II listed building is bursting with character, from the traditional wooden beams and four-poster beds to the luxurious roll top baths and oil paintings. You could spend hours wandering the house and admiring the antiques, before gathering around the open fire for a cosy evening, or challenging your loved ones to a game of billiards. There are thirty acres of private parkland to ramble through, with a lawned garden to picnic on and a terrace with a barbecue for alfresco feasting. You can also head out to visit the remarkable Sandringham Estate, or the RSPB's Snettisham Nature Reserve, both of which are just a 10 minute drive away.

Take off into the beautiful wilds of the Lincolnshire countryside with a stay at this Victorian farm cottage on the doorstep of a 400-acre nature reserve. 

Don the home’s wellington boots to voyage through the surrounding woodlands with roaming wild ponies just moments from your door. Rejuvenate with a pampering session at the estate’s natural spa (think Cleopatra copper milk and flower baths) – a minute’s drive away. Or up the ante with archery and axe throwing lessons before a bonfire evening – it’s all going on here.

Back at home, this place is everything you’d imagined your country retreat to be. As pretty as a picture inside and out, this is a home you'll happily retreat to after days exploring the medieval streets. When the sun shines, head on outside into the suntrap, walled garden – if you time it right, you'll see the hydrangeas in all their pink glory. And on winter nights, flex your culinary skills in the made-for-action kitchen, then come together in the atmospheric dining room to host a glamorous dinner party. When it's time to put your feet up, the separate reception room has sumptuous sofas beside a fireplace to sink right in. And up the grand flight of stairs, you'll find three serene bedrooms of elegant design and lofty proportions. Beyond this luxurious home, you'll find many of the city's historical hotspots close by, including York Minister (fifteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (nineteen minutes on foot). Pour yourself a welcome gin and tonic and make yourself comfortable on the living room’s plush sofas as you look out onto views of nearby York Minster. These privileged views are enjoyed from every room in the apartment – not least of all the stunning bedrooms. With two sleek porcelain-tiled showers – one of which is an en-suite – offering rainfall showers and heated mirrors, you’ve got everything you need to experience the city in sumptuous fashion. 

When it comes to exploring, you couldn’t be better placed either. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. It’s no wonder your hosts are both artists who love to travel. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul. 

A Moving Feast

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.
