For families and groups looking for a rural retreat, this barn conversion in the countryside will do nicely. It was designed by an architect with flexibility and accessibility at its core – there's a lowered kitchen island, wet rooms with shower seats and handrails, and it's all wheelchair-accessible. There's plenty to do here, with an arts and crafts playroom and a secured garden with a firepit and barbecue, and it's all surrounded by acres of woodland. Whether you're here for nature walks or wildlife-spotting, you'll find it all in the local trails and quaint villages of the area. The local villages and market towns with their restaurants, cafés and independent shops are a short drive away. 

Blue Lark

Built back in the mid-nineteenth century, this Grade-II listed house in Stamford is a real looker from the outside, thanks to its slate roof, coursed stone walls and a white clock face at the very top of the property. The interior is just as handsome, although perhaps a little more modern than might be anticipated. Black leather furnishings and stark white walls are a chic combination in the dual-aspect living area, as is the wood-panelled kitchen and the glass dining room table. Around the back of the house, there's a small patio area with seating so you can make the most of bursts of bright weather. There are plenty of rural attractions around these parts if you visit during the warmer seasons. The sixteenth-century manor, Burghley House, and the adjacent parkland can be reached in twelve minutes by car, while Rutland Water Nature Reserve takes around eighteen.

Time of Your Life

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. It’s no wonder your hosts are both artists who love to travel. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul. 

A Moving Feast

Calling all anglers – this home is for you. It’s located on a fishery in the heart of Chacombe, Oxfordshire and has its own pontoon on the main lake. We love the stunning lake views from this unique home’s private front gravelled garden which has a picnic bench for idyllic lunches. There’s also an enclosed rear garden with furniture, a fire pit and a hot tub. There are more vistas to enjoy from the mezzanine bedroom, too – this is the perfect romantic escape.

By The Lakes

Built in 1745, this historic English manor is set in the glorious Norfolk countryside. It is a magnificent estate with grand spaces and luscious grounds, perfect for an exclusive country retreat with your closest family and friends. The Grade II listed building is bursting with character, from the traditional wooden beams and four-poster beds to the luxurious roll top baths and oil paintings. You could spend hours wandering the house and admiring the antiques, before gathering around the open fire for a cosy evening, or challenging your loved ones to a game of billiards. There are thirty acres of private parkland to ramble through, with a lawned garden to picnic on and a terrace with a barbecue for alfresco feasting. You can also head out to visit the remarkable Sandringham Estate, or the RSPB's Snettisham Nature Reserve, both of which are just a 10 minute drive away. 

The Keepers Key

Country Idyll is the kind of home that makes you feel welcome as soon as you step through the front door. Classically charming with a modern twist, it sets the scene for a memorable escape in rural Lincolnshire. As soon as you arrive, drop your bags, flick on the kettle and cut yourself a slice of cake from the complimentary hamper left by your host. Take a seat at the bistro set in your quaint country garden and watch the birds and rabbits flit across the lawn. Once you’re rested and recharged, pull on your walking boots and set out for a ramble along bridleways and lesser travelled lanes. Plus, you’re less than a fifteen-minute drive from the market town of Grantham and the historic castle and stately home of Belvoir.  When you get home, the cosy living room with comfy tufted sofas calls for an evening in front of the crackling log fire, sharing a bottle of your favourite drop and playing board games with your loved ones. 

Country Idyll

This Georgian abode began its life as two 18th century coach houses and was expertly combined in the 1930s to create one impressive golf pavilion. Now a swish family home, the place is a seamless blend of contemporary design, plush materials and old-world charm. A sophisticated living space dressed in rich chocolate brown, features a huge open hearth and glittering chandeliers. Make yourself comfortable on the squashy Chesterfield as the more musically inclined member of your group provides the soundtrack on the piano. Outside, a glorious leafy canopy provides cool shade in the heights of the summer and makes for an excellent spot to admire your idyllic getaway. You’ve an acre of grounds to explore and a Summer House for stolen moments with your favourite book plus a sunken trampoline for big and little kids alike. Yomp through the surrounding countryside, bask in nature at Draycote Water (a twenty-minute drive away) or visit the famous town of Rugby – it’ll take you no more than fifteen minutes by car. 

Dandelions & Daisies

Rustic and homespun, this quaint home is perfect for large families or groups of friends. It's set in the sleepy village of Baston, a picturesque stretch of greenery and welcoming pubs. 

Built in the 1750's yet installed with modern fittings, it expertly blends a traditional vibe with contemporary designs. Think low-hanging wooden beams next to high-quality kitchen equipment. 

In the winter or autumn months, the living room warms up with the heat of the fireplace, creating a cosy haven to spend your evenings. When the sun shines on the stone exterior, sit out on the dreamy garden table next to the water. Idyllic and peaceful, it's a serene spot to tuck into breakfast or just sit with a glass of wine. 

If you fancy heading out of the home, Baston is formed by scenic walking trails along the river. If you're taking your dog, they'll love the open green spaces and woodland areas.

For the days where you fancy some urban comforts, Peterborough and Stamford are just a short drive away. Stamford is a postcard-picture town – cobbled streets are lined with homely pubs and authentic cafes. Spend a day perusing the shops, exploring the market and sipping a beer in the pub garden.

Grain Of Water

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.  

Lady’s Mantle

An interesting fact about this former stable block is that in the same year it was completed — 1881 — the architect behind the design, Alfred Waterhouse, also finished work on the National History Museum. Admittedly, this building in the Norfolk village of Crimplesham is slightly less spectacular than the London museum, but there are still double-height ceilings and a large staircase upon entrance for a touch of grandeur. There have been a lot of changes in the interior since the late nineteenth century, but the wholesale modernisation feels in keeping with the country location, especially in the large wood-panelled kitchen, the comfy living room complete with a roaring fireplace and the games room that's accessible through a secret bookcase. There's an enclosed garden with alfresco seating and a barbecue, but there's plenty more to see and do outside in the local area. The historical town of Ely takes just under half an hour to reach in the car, while the coast at Hunstanton can be reached in forty minutes' drive. Closer to home, the quaint town of Downham Market is an hour away on foot.

Making History

Unique and charming, this round house is located on a working farm in the quaint village of Chacombe in Oxfordshire. It’s spread over three floors and boasts far-reaching countryside views that provide inspiration for walks during your stay. From here, you can easily visit Broughton Castle and the National Trust’s Upton House and Gardens, or simply explore the farmland. When you’re not outside enjoying the fresh air, you’ll likely spend most of your time in the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space, where you can cook together before curling up on a comfy sofa. 


Round the Twist

This charming stone cottage in the Derbyshire countryside is perfect for any season. Like most cottages, it's compact but cosy. There's a wood-burning stove and underfloor heating to keep you warm on colder nights, and a dining table on the patio for alfresco meals on warmer days – you can also enjoy views of the Peak District and the 15th-century ruins of Wingfield Manor here. It's a short walk to the village pub and shop from your front door, while must-sees like Crich Tramway Village, Chatsworth House, and the hiking trails of the Peak District are a short drive away.
