There’s an array of restaurants, bars and boutiques at nearby Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, or have a stroll along the canal close by. The apartment itself has been featured in a variety of films and advertisements and takes its inspiration from a collection of artists and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. The highlight for us though is the pretty courtyard garden – the perfect spot for reading a book.

There’s construction work taking place behind the home, so you may hear noise between 8am and 6pm in the week and on some Saturday mornings. Sitting in the corner of a charming Georgian square not too far from King's Cross, this home has a few surprises up its sleeve.

The first is its sheer size. Spread across four floors, there's a wealth of space in which large groups can gather and spend time together. And this isn't all inside, either – in a city in which outdoor space is highly coveted, this townhouse benefits from not just one, but two terraces. One of these is up on the roof, while the other is a pleasant, plant-filled garden with plenty of seating and a barbecue.

Back inside, the design leans on the traditional side, although there are a fair few quirky features inside. The wall mural in the living room is particularly pretty, as is the eclectic collection of artwork that lines the walls and the Mediterranean-style tiles in the bathrooms. If these aren't to your taste, the view of the leafy garden square from the large windows might just well be.

Despite being right in the heart of London, the immediate area feels quiet and residential, although you don't have too far to walk if you're after a distraction or two. The neighbourhood is well-covered when it comes to museums, with institutions dedicated to Charles Dickens, the Post Office and even funeral history reached in ten minutes on foot. The daddy of them all, The British Museum, is only a twenty-minute walk, too.

Snug but superbly located, this ground-floor apartment is ideal for practical travellers. There's no denying that it's compact, but we think it works – even if both bedrooms lack storage. With the bedroom and en-suite at the back of the apartment, away from the road, it's a peaceful space to return to at the end of a busy day. And while the en-suite may be a bit of a squeeze for some, there is another private bathroom up half a flight of stairs – a helpful addition.

Located in a beautiful white stucco townhouse, just a three-minute walk from Angel Tube station, this studio flat is a fantastic choice for a solo traveller or couple looking for a stylish space but who don't need lots of superfluous space. Despite the lofty three-metre-high ceilings and large sash window, your host – an experienced architect and interior designer – has really put a lot of thought into the layout and decor to make the most of the compact size. No detail has been overlooked in the pursuit of perfection, and every element must earn its place. As a result, the home manages to be both a chic yet relaxing space for two people to enjoy comfortably. We loved the use of beautiful natural materials, which are mixed with a subtle and mature colour palette. A bonus is a super-smart bathroom, complete with a sumptuous bathtub – perfect for a soak at the end of a busy day exploring the pubs, indie boutiques and antiques shops that dot this corner of North London.

Combing industrial-chic, ethnic influence and attention to detail, this white stucco Islington apartment is all about the design. Soft pink hues cover the walls, and original features such as the polished wooden floorboards and exposed beams are intermingled with modern furnishings like the black metal bookshelf unit and glass coffee table. Converted from a Victorian tea warehouse, Cloudberry Jam delivers an effortless mix of an industrial style with soft furnishings, to create a contemporary yet comfortable space that will delight minimalist lovers. In addition, as a penthouse home, it offers lots of space (the open-plan living area is very generous), high ceilings and a terrace which, although lacks furniture, is an added bonus.
