Waterloo Views

Cross the gangplank onto this incredible floating home near the Thames. Moored just a couple of blocks from Tower Bridge, this former 1930s steel barge is a ten-minute walk from the Tower of London. The top deck has been converted into a long, open living space with views of St Katharine Docks Marina from the huge windows. We love the semi-outdoor dining room, housed in a glass atrium-style space to the rear of the ship, with seating for ten. Choose to relax in the stylish white lounge on the upper deck, or head downstairs to the snug with its u-shaped sofa around a striking suspended fireplace. Bedrooms are on the lower deck, but that doesn’t mean dark cabins with tiny portholes. Spacious rooms have walls of windows and if there are portholes, they’re the size of a bass drum, letting in tonnes of natural light. If you manage to bag the master bedroom, its en-suite comes with a sauna. Welcome aboard, matey!

All Afloat

Exquisitely eccentric, with a roof terrace overlooking the British Museum, this rare and quirky penthouse is ideal for a family or group of friends who want to be as inspired by their London home as they are by its first-rate Bloomsbury location. Every corner reveals a clever design feature, a stunning work of art, a spectacular mural or a flamboyantly decorated bedroom – the multitude of idiosyncrasies makes this colourful home a real feast for the eyes. Maybe you’ll spend your mornings sipping an espresso on the balcony or perhaps you’ll sprawl out in the trendy living space as the appointed chef of your group knocks up a tasty breakfast in the sleek kitchen. Everything you'd want or need is on your doorstep here, and for first-time visitors to London, it's an exciting, albeit busy, spot to base yourself. When you're not out exploring, this stylish apartment is an excellent place to rest your head. We think it's bright and surprisingly roomy, especially for a flat in one of London's liveliest neighbourhoods. Following an afternoon adventure, sprawl out on the plush L-shaped sofa with a glass of wine and your favourite Netflix shows on the TV. If you're in the mood for a home-cooked meal, the glossy full-size kitchen has you covered. Both bedrooms have sumptuous beds and sleek bathrooms with rain showers, but our favourite detail is the small Juliet balcony off the dining area, where you can stand with your morning coffee and admire the Chinese lanterns hanging on the streets below.

We think Samuel Johnson was right when he said that “when a man is tired of London, he’s tired of life”. So it's best to stay in the heart of the city in Soho, where one can never tire. Make this charming flat your base as you explore the surrounding bustle. The bright, open living room has a comfortable sofa and family dining table, so you can chill out, relax and gather as a group to eat in comfort and style. The kitchen has everything you need for dinner – though there are plenty of restaurants around if you'd prefer to let some of the world's best chefs do the cooking. Step out onto your private balcony, with its racing-green tiled walls, and enjoy the fresh air as you look out over the rooftops of Soho. Despite the incredible location round the corner from Leicester Square, this home manages to enjoy a sense of calmness and privacy that belies the busy Soho streets that surround it. If you're chasing the thrill of the city, this is the perfect place.
