This Paddington apartment has space to work from home and excellent transport links across the city. It's a great find for business travellers, though families and friend groups will also feel right at home. Keep in mind that the living space is on the smaller side, and it's on the third floor of a building without a lift. Even so, given the location – a five-minute walk from Paddington Station and twenty minutes from Hyde Park – we think that's a fair compromise.

Originally built in the 1730s, this sumptuous apartment is a shining example of Georgian architecture. The building is one of the oldest in Mayfair – in 1821, famed Buckingham Palace architect Thomas Cubbit extended it – and you can see the character, history and period details in every room. It feels like a home you want to linger in, with new surprises waiting at every turn. We love the antique furniture – a clawfoot desk here, a fauteuil armchair there – but the smart kitchen, stylish bathroom and mod-cons like a rainfall shower, espresso machine and Netflix bring things in the 21st-century. We think it's the best of both worlds, and the location is even better.

Ritzy and charming, Mayfair is home to leafy squares, cobbled lanes lined with cafes and some of the oldest shops in London. Fashionistas will enjoy shopping along New Bond Street and Saville Row (a five-minute walk away), art fiends can browse the nearby galleries and auction houses (Phillips Auction House & Gallery is right next door) and foodies will love the bevvy of gourmet eateries nearby. You'll have direct access to Kensington Gardens, and there's a wealth of shops, restaurants and pubs within easy reach. If you want to travel a little further, the tube is just five minutes away on foot.

Many of the capital's must-sees – including Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, and Soho – can be reached on foot, and for exploring further afield, the nearest Tube station is a seven-minute stroll away. All of the bedrooms here are en-suite, and there’s plenty of space to relax in the living area after a busy day seeing the sights. We think this home is a great choice for a family or group of friends wanting a comfortable stay in a central location.

This recently refurbished home is a true haven in one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in London. Set right between the picturesque neighbourhoods of Paddington and Bayswater, this is the perfect spot for a romantic city stay for two or as a base for a solo traveller wanting to see what the city has to offer. You’ll have everything you need in this ground-floor apartment – high ceilings, a full kitchen and a spacious bedroom all await you here. When you’re ready to see the sights, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are a short walk away – and nearby Paddington Station can take you almost anywhere else in the city.

The Chic Abode

From this traditionally-minded yet well-maintained Mayfair apartment, there's a little taste of luxury in every direction. To your east is Liberty department store and there are further designer shopping options to your north on Bond Street. Head south and in two minutes, you could be on Savile Row, while wandering further west along these embassy-lined streets will get you to Grosvenor Square. However, despite this unbeatable location, we found this home to be extremely peaceful and a welcome refuge from the non-stop going-ons of Central London. The chic kitchen was a highlight here, with smart brass finishes contrasting nicely with honeycomb marble tiling, but let's not kid ourselves — with this many renowned restaurants only a short stroll away, don't be surprised if this home's oven remains undisturbed during the duration of your stay.

With its all-white interior design and tranquil views of Inverness Terrace, White Doves is a peaceful home. A beautiful Bayswater sanctuary (just steps away from Hyde Park), it’s one of those places that you look forward to coming home to at the end of a long day of sightseeing. We can’t get over all the period features – the picture-perfect crown moulding and the charming windows being our favourite parts. On top of that, Jane is also a wonderful host, who’s put a lot of care into designing a seamless space filled with a welcoming atmosphere.

In the heart of London's old Dickensian market district, this Notting Hill apartment is certainly a hidden treasure. The home's structure, interiors and antique furniture all share a yesteryear charm, while the modern island kitchen will make knocking up lazy brunches a joy. The owner's clearly thought outside the box when it came to decorating and we love the rustic wooden pieces, quirky adornments and mellow yellow tones as much as we do the original features. Speaking of, with its high period ceilings and shutter windows, natural light floods into the living area, creating a bright and airy spot to show off your day's forgotten finds. While the statement design and old-world objects add interest, the real star of the show here is that all-too-rare of London amenities – an outside space. Surrounded by thriving greenery and ancient tree canopies, the decked terrace is a real sanctuary of calm – perfect for throwing open the shutters, extending the communal space and sipping alfresco drinks on warmer evenings. It's no mean feat creating a place of calm in the middle of lively Notting Hill, but that's exactly what this home does. Return after a lovely day spent exploring the two-mile stretch of colourful terraces, historic pubs and vintage clothing stalls on Portobello Road, under a twenty-minute stroll away, and feel a sense of home-sweet-home in your eclectic yet oh-so cosy digs.

Sitting within a building dating back to the 1730s, it’s the earliest surviving house in the area and was modernised in 1821 by Thomas Cubitt – the same master builder who constructed Buckingham Palace’s facade.
