Days begin with a complimentary breakfast in the bright kitchen as you plan for the day ahead. When it's time to head out, pack a picnic and fill up a flask of coffee, before embarking on a morning stroll in the crisp country air. Enjoy the dew on the fields and the tranquil sounds as you explore your surroundings. If you fancy a trip to Norwich, the city’s Romanesque cathedral, Sainsbury Centre art gallery and excellent selection of restaurants are less than an hour’s drive away.

After a day spent out and about, head back home, pour yourself a glass of wine and snuggle down in the cosy living room. There really is no better place to unwind after a day of exploring than under the wood beams, giving off a rural warmth that makes the space instantly inviting. This baby blue timber lodge is just as cute on the inside as it is on the outside. As well as having all the essentials for a romantic getaway, there are house plants, colourful pieces of artwork and a turquoise accent wall to give the place a bit of character without overdoing it — one of the hosts is an interior designer, can't you tell? Out through the glass door, there's a large garden with a cosy seating area at the far end and plenty of potted plants dotted about. You'll find that there's a real sense of peace here. The local village of Banningham is small — albeit with a well-recommended gastropub — and there are plenty of outdoor excursions to fill your days with nearby. The birthplace of Anne Boleyn, Blickling Estate, takes ten minutes to reach in the car, while Cromer Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

Spend a day exploring the grounds or spot the local birdlife on a water-trail boat tour on The Broads. Not all the best attractions are saved for the summer months – head to Horsey Beach in the winter to see the grey seals during the birthing season. Regardless of the time of year, this piece of sandy beach is a pleasure all year round – you might still catch views of seals who’ve stuck around for some sun. If you're seeking a culinary experience, there are some charming local pubs in the area. As evening rolls around, pocket a few balls on the pool table, and enjoy a round of table tennis or air hockey, before sinking into the garden hot tub for a soak session under the stars.

Gatehouse Gardens

With its thatched roof and shuttered windows, you couldn't ask for a cuter cottage than this Grade-II listed address sitting in the middle of a country estate in rural Norfolk.

Although it dates back to the 19th century, the interior is a little more contemporary than you might expect, save for the wooden beams and winding staircase. White walls and framed pictures lend the feel of an art gallery, while the cosy kitchen with a Belfast sink retains a rustic air. And what could be a better way of ending the day than with a long and languorous soak in the freestanding bathtub?

When the weather forecast makes for kind reading, the home has a private patio complete with a hot tub, barbecue and plenty of furniture to help you make the most of it. Alternatively, it doesn't take too long to reach the Norfolk coastline – Sea Palling Beach is twenty minutes' drive away, for instance. The city of Norwich is only half an hour away in the car, too.

Quintessentially British

Perched on the edge of Blickling Hall Estate and fringing the chocolate-box village of Oulton, the setting for this adult-only hideaway is dreamy. All the cottagecore essentials are ticked off with original beams, a wood-burning stove, and a pretty, south-facing garden to call your own. Although it’s worth noting the home’s low beams and restricted head height might not suit the vertically blessed. With no amenities within walking distance, you’ll need a car here. Head to Holt for a dose of sea air (a twenty-minute drive). Or, closer to home, nearby Aylsham for a taste of market town life.

While the tiny villages of Norfolk offer postcard-ready, rural scenes that you would expect, this home has quite the opposite of a rustic aesthetic. A two-minute stroll from the nearest pub in Banningham, or an eighteen-minute drive to coastal delights like the pier of Cromer, you can still enjoy traditional activities – but in a rather modern setting.

The exterior presents a cottage-like feel with red bricks and chunky timber supports propping up a slate roof. And that’s where the rustic feel ends. Step inside to beautifully 21st-century interiors, where the apex ceiling and bright white walls create an impressive sense of space and zen.

Kick off your walking boots and sink into the plush sofa while you look through the generous welcome hamper from your host. Whether you fancy a cup of tea, or wine is more your tipple, anything will go well with fresh bread and homemade cake. And you don’t need to prepare lunch either (although it’s a delight to cook in the sleek kitchen or on the barbecue), as your host can arrange for a private chef to make your meals in-house. We recommend dining alfresco in the lush, secluded garden – listen to birds sing while you savour every last bite on the sunny patio.

The southwest-facing walled garden with its pretty lawn is the perfect spot to unwind – fire up the barbecue for an alfresco lunch. On chillier evenings, cosy up in front of the wood-burning stove or have a luxurious soak in the roll-top bath. There is plenty of family fun to be had in this home – let siblings battle it out at the football table or bury themselves in a board game in the entertainment room. In the cloakroom, you'll find ample space for buckets and spades, and we recommend heading out to the nearby Cromer Beach for the day (a twenty-minute drive). If you want to explore the Norfolk Broads – it's just over thirty minutes in the car. Or it's a three-minute stroll to the local pub for a hearty meal and a pint to round off a perfect day in Norfolk.

A gorgeous barn conversion close to the wind-whipped Norfolk coast, this home has been set up with dog lovers in mind. There's enough space for up to four of your furry friends to join, with a lavish fleece-lined bed for each, throws for those that just won't stay off the sofa, an enclosed garden and a special dog hamper to welcome them. Two-legged guests will love the open-plan living and dining area, the AGA in the kitchen, comfy sofas and plenty of games. You'll definitely want to keep the dogs out of the bedrooms, though, as the Egyptian cotton bedding is far too sumptuous to share. Nearby there are lots of dog-friendly woodland and beach walks, and local pub The Star Inn will be happy to welcome you and your tail-wagging companions. After a day out exploring the best of the north Norfolk coast, treat yourself to a soak in the hot tub looking out over the surrounding fields. If you want to explore further afield, head twenty miles north to Cromer, known as 'the gem of the Norfolk coast'. We think it makes for the 'ulti-mutt' escape.

With relaxing walks along the Weavers Way as you traverse through verdant trees and bushes – a beautiful getaway from the hustle and bustle of busy daily life. Sea Palling Beach is a fifteen–minute drive away from the house for a day out by the ocean – your dogs will love running up and down the sand here.

We love that the bedroom has been formed from the circular base of the lighthouse tower (though the bathroom is back up the stairs off the living room). And the good news is this lighthouse doesn't have a fog signal, so you won't be woken in the middle of the night. When you feel like exploring, a ten-minute stroll along the coastal path will take you to the North Norfolk town of Cromer, with its sandy beach and an array of shops and restaurants. Or for golf lovers, adjacent to the lighthouse is a golf course.

Don't you just love a garden with a sea view? Even better, this charming semi-detached cottage is next to a lighthouse, built in 1833. There's no need to worry – the lighthouse doesn't have a fog signal, so you won't be jumping whenever it's misty (though it does need regular maintenance, so staff may visit during your stay). Even inside, you can admire the vistas of the lighthouse, sea and neighbouring golf course (yes, you heard that right, golf lovers). If you prefer the beach, Cromer, with its traditional pier and colourful beach huts, is a ten-minute stroll along the coastal path.

The Naval Captain

With a sprawling garden, tree house and a games room that kids will approve of, this Norwich cottage is a solid option for family holidays. Outdoor seating, a hot tub and a barbecue round out the wrap-around garden. Perfect for spending sunny days outside. The house itself is cosy and comfortable, with more than enough space even with up to five guests sleeping on sofa beds in the living areas. As for your locations, this cottage is tucked away in the 'Capital of The Broads', close to the Broads National Park. Norwich is a short drive away, and a few beaches dotted along the coast lies within driving distance.

We may have just found the most adorable home in Norfolk — and it's pet friendly. Located only a short walk from Happisburgh beach, this stunning barn conversion is a fantastic spot to bring your loved ones and let loose. While the pups are playing in the garden, you can chill out in the shade with a cocktail recipe that took you mane iterations to perfect and play scrabble to showcase your enviable vocabulary. Take the tribe to the beach whenever you feel like and when the weather is nice, have a picnic there too. On lazier days, you might only make it as far as the orchard garden, but that's more than fine as long as you remember to relax. When you feel like embarking on a day trip, Norfolk will provide plenty of fascinating destinations ranging from war memorials to famous tearooms. 

Happyburgh

This charming cottage feels like a step back in time. It sits in the former stable block of an elegant Georgian Estate, dating back to the early-seventeenth century. Now a working farm, it's surrounded by four hundred acres of gloriously green pastures and ancient parkland – inhabited by herds of red deer, muntjac and an array of birdlife – which you're encouraged to explore. Here, you're just shy of a twenty-minute drive from the picturesque cathedral city of Norwich and the enchanting Norfolk Broads.

The exquisitely renovated interior is cosy and welcoming. Hardwood floors, exposed brickwork, and beam-clad ceilings offer a characterful canvas primed for relaxation. We especially love the sitting room with its plush velvet sofas and wood-burning fireplace, not to mention the delightful country-house kitchen, where a spacious dining table offers a lovely space for homecooked feasts with your clan. 

Framed by a grade-two listed stone wall and dense woodland, a private south-facing garden beckons you to feel completely immersed in nature. After a restful slumber in Egyptian cotton linens, step outside and enjoy your morning brew to the sound of birdsong and gently rustling leaves. Between adventures, spend your days sunbathing on the lawn, reading in the conservatory and, come sunset, sipping cocktails on the furnished patio.

Echoes of Spring

Perfect for pups, this lovely cottage has everything you and your four-legged friends will need for a seaside getaway. It's incredibly dog-friendly, with heaps of features that dog owners will appreciate – an enclosed, astroturf courtyard (no muddy paws!), easy-clean laminate floors, bowls and crates, and a comfy white sofa that looks stylish but is easy to wipe down. Even without a pooch, you'll be happy to call this annexe home. It's bright, inviting and has plenty of charm. Owners Tracie and Neil are highly knowledgeable about the area and keep a cosy, traditional home – they live next door but can be as hands-on (or off) as you need. We love their attention to detail, and a few unique pieces were handcrafted by Neil, including the TV stand converted from a Singer sewing machine, the pine coffee table and the light fittings. Set in the coastal village of Happisburgh, there's a lot to keep you busy. After an alfresco breakfast, lace up your boots and take a walk along the beach – both Cart Gap and Happisburgh Beach are a twenty-minute stroll away. You can't miss the bold red-and-white-striped lighthouse along the sea – it's the oldest working one in East Anglia – but other places worth exploring include the lush Bacton Woods and the collection of inns and pubs serving traditional English food along the seaside.

If you’re looking for a real away-from-it-all retreat that’s truly one of a kind, then look no further than this home on the Norfolk Coast. Featured on Channel 4's Homes by the Sea, it’s located right next to the dunes at Winterton-on-Sea, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A former working lighthouse, it’s perfect for a peaceful stay with a surreal fairytale quality. When we visited, we were particularly impressed by the unusual round rooms that stack up on top of one another. Once filled with nautical equipment, these are now well designed spaces with beautiful furniture and objects, including an impressive library, bunk-bed room for kids, living room, and finally a lofty viewing platform bedroom (not for the faint hearted). Down on ground level you’ll find a contemporary open-plan space where you can cook in the shiny stainless steel kitchen or bask in the warmth of the wood burner as you eat dinner in the relaxed dining area. Folding doors give access out into the small garden for picnics or al fresco breakfasts. Families in particular will love the easy access to seaside life, including great fish and chips, good local pubs, parks and boat-trips. The Norfolk Broads is also nearby; the UK's largest wetland area, it's perfect for boating, cycling and walking. In short, this is a great home for those who want to experience everything a Norfolk staycation has to offer, while staying somewhere with real wow factor.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.
