Is there anything more quintessentially British than staying in a converted pub? We don't think so. Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast.

There are a lot of modern conveniences too, including a Bluetooth speaker, two flat-screen TVs and a remote-controlled shower. After a day strolling through town or exploring North Norfolk, come back home to fire up the barbecue in the garden for an alfresco meal.  Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. Location-wise, there’s plenty to walk to in Holt, but you’ll need a car for beach days. Get off to a flying start in Blakeney, just five miles away.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.

This charming barn conversion borders the Blakeney National Nature Reserve, where you’ll find sprawling wetlands, sand beaches and the area's native seals. If you’re hoping to visit the seals, Blakeney Point is home to both the common seals during the summer months and grey seals during the winter. There's something for everyone on this stretch of the North Norfolk Heritage Coast, no matter if you prefer sea swimming or walking along the shore with the dog. We can’t think of a better way to end the day than with a soak in the freestanding copper tub before sinking into your sheets and the log fire flames dancing away in the background.

This lovely home takes a classic English barn and renovates it into a chic, open space with all the country charm and none of the snug spaces. Glass walkways and enormous French windows in the living area add a contemporary edge to the original wooden beams and red-tiled roof. Not only is it open and bright, but it's perfect for socialising. You can easily flit between cooking in the kitchen and relaxing on the sofa, keeping the conversation flowing the whole time. And don't even get us started on the garden. Scented with honeysuckle and lavender, it's the very picture of a country idyll, with a small gate leading into a secret orchard straight from the pages of a period novel. Lounge in the fresh air with a glass of wine while the little ones (and the pups) run around in the sunshine. For dinner, throw something delicious on the barbecue and dine alfresco as the sun sets.

When you fancy exploring, the nearby village of Thursford has a 500-year old wood (excellent spot for walks), a famous steam engine museum (ideal for trainspotters) and a few country eateries (perfect for afternoon pints). Not far from the Norfolk coast, you can explore the marshes in Cley-next-the-Sea, spot seals in Blakeney or sprawl out on the sandy beaches in Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, about twenty minutes away by car.

If exploring is on the cards, take a ten-minute stroll through your neighbourhood to the Salthouse Marshes – keep an eye out for Spoonbills feeding in the pools. Head to Holt for a dose of sea air (a twenty-minute drive). Or, closer to home, nearby Aylsham for a taste of market town life.

When the sun goes down, we can't think of anything more delightful than popping a log on the wood-burner, grabbing a glass of wine and playing a game or two before bedtime. 

With the Georgian town of Holt an eight-minute drive away and the Salthouse Marshes reachable in fifteen, this cosy cottage promises plenty of Norfolk adventures. Stay local and ramble along the walking paths and country lanes on your doorstep – ideal for exploring with your four-legged friends in tow – or, take it easy and relax with a pamper session at the award-winning spa in the village, followed by a pint and delicious dinner at the gastropub.

Finchsong Cottage

Built back in 1835, this cottage in the Norfolk town of Holt is approaching its 200th birthday, although you wouldn't be able to tell from the contemporary interior. The soothing palette of muted greys and chic furnishings are completely in keeping with the 21st century rather than the 19th, save for an eclectic collection of curios and mementoes on the shelves.

Arguably the home's best feature is a modern addition – the conservatory is blessed with natural light and is a lovely place to enjoy dinner regardless of the season. It also gives you a view of the back garden, which has another table plus a charcoal barbecue ready and waiting for summer evening feasts.

One thing that hasn't changed in the years since the house has been standing is  the quality of the location. The Georgian architecture of Holt is lovely to wander about and there are shops, cafes and art galleries with which to fill up your afternoon. Further afield, the rugged Norfolk coastline isn't too far away – Salthouse Beach takes ten minutes to reach in the car.

Set within an exquisite Grade II-listed house, this palatial apartment blends country elegance with modern style. We loved the floor-to-ceiling windows, which flood the open-place space with natural light. With ground floor access to the beautiful shared garden, you can walk straight out to enjoy a tranquil morning sat around the terrace coffee table, or spend an afternoon having a picnic on the green. Located within walking distance to nearby shops and pubs, you’ll be able to explore the charming village of Binham.  Everything is steeped in history around here, but the early-twelfth-century Benedictine priory is a must-see. Luckily, it's so close you can spot it from the bedroom windows.

Warham Abbey

Providing ample space for two with beautiful gardens in the front and back, this cottage is the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Wonderfully refurbished in a traditional style that’s perfectly suited to country living, you can count on charm and character in abundance. 

Curl up next to the wood-burning stove in colder months and dine alfresco in the summer. Thanks to the large, comfy bed, you may struggle to get up in the morning. But our suggestion is simple – stay where you are and listen to the birdsong as you gaze out over the countryside. 

There are plenty of walks and cycling routes from right outside your front door, meaning you couldn’t be better positioned to make the most of the beautiful North Norfolk landscape.
