In the North York Moors National Park, thick greenery and lush countryside vistas are just one side of this delightful display of nature. While this home sits between rural villages like Castleton and Danby, a half-hour or so in the car will take you to the shores of Whitby. After a day of bracing sea air and a portion of fish and chips, heading back to your country abode feels a world away from this colourful seaside town.

While fish might be on the menu at the coast, this home has a history of pork. A former pigsty, this rustic building sets the tone for an elegant and modern stay – quite the renovation. From the outside, its terracotta roof and honey-coloured stonework certainly give it a barn-like feel. With original stable-style doors and a large courtyard out front, you can imagine the livestock milling around in days gone by.

But as soon as you step inside, history is forgotten. Fresh and sophisticated, the living space is an inviting mix of soft fabrics, chunky timber beams, and understated furnishings, all in the glow of a fabulous log-burner. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

While it may look like a traditional terraced cottage from the outside, it's been refurbished to high standards and furnished with style, so we guarantee you'll look forward to coming back to it after a day spent exploring the the North York Moors or at the beach. We picture ourselves cooking up a feast in the high-spec kitchen before retiring for a well-earned bubble bath in one of the two stunning clawfoot bathtubs. Featuring a secret snug filled with floor cushions and also a bunk bedroom, it would suit a large family with some younger members.

This home in Egton is the perfect compromise between seclusion and a beach holiday. With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. Whilst there, be sure to walk the promenade for a gorgeous view of the Church of Saint Mary and try your hand at the claw machine in the pier arcade. After a lunch of fresh seafood, head to the Whitby Abbey, a fourteen-minute walk from Whitby Beach, to visit the renowned ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula.

Back home, take in the tranquillity of the secluded escape by sitting out on the deck with a cup of coffee. Watch the breeze play through the line of trees surrounding you as you catch up on your favourite podcast. We recommend, at least once, sitting out here to watch the sun rise or set, maybe even both. Inside, get the cacao ready for movie night in front of the fire, and when you’re ready for bed, swing by the bathroom first for a soak in the tub.

In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water.
